He eventually graduated from high school and made what seemed to be a full recovery. However, the scars left by the injury ran deeper than anyone could have imagined. His journey took a darker turn when he relapsed, turning to synthetic marijuana as a coping mechanism. The substance’s chemical effects caused a devastating imbalance, leading to a diagnosis of psychosis. I was just 13 years old when I witnessed one of the most traumatic moments of my life: my brother running into a car. At that age, I didn’t fully understand mental illness, but I knew my brother was no longer the joyful person he once was. Not long after, he ran to a highway overpass with the intent to end his life. He climbed onto a highway guide sign, convinced that jumping was the only way to escape his pain. Before he could follow through, paramedics arrived on the scene and pulled him off the sign, rushing him to VCU Medical Center. That moment was a terrifying wake-up call for all of us. Between his visits to psych wards, our home was no longer a safe haven but a place filled with fear and uncertainty. There were days I would lock myself in my room to escape the chaos of our family’s new reality. His outbursts and unpredictable behavior often made me feel like I was losing the brother I had always known. I remember the despair in his eyes and the hopelessness that consumed our household. It was heartbreaking to see someone I loved so much grappling with a combination of depression, anxiety, and psychosis. At one point, his mental health hit rock bottom, and he attempted to end his life. That moment was a wake-up call for all of us. I was terrified but determined to support him in any way I could, even as I struggled to process my own fears and emotions. Over the years, things began to improve, albeit slowly. My brother sought therapy and entered rehabilitation programs that gave him the tools to rebuild his life. I’ve watched him battle his demons with courage and resilience. One area where blockchain can make a substantial impact is property ownership. Historically, Black Americans have faced discriminatory practices such as redlining, land theft, and unjust foreclosures that have hindered their ability to accumulate generational wealth through homeownership. Blockchain, through its immutable and transparent ledger, can create secure records of property ownership that are resistant to tampering or manipulation. This would ensure that property rights are protected and verifiable, reducing the risk of land being unlawfully taken or lost due to corrupt practices. In voting and civil rights, blockchain could also offer a solution to the persistent issue of voter suppression, which disproportionately impacts Black communities. By creating a transparent and decentralized voting system, blockchain can ensure that every vote is recorded securely and accurately, reducing the risk of tampering or disenfranchisement. In 2019, I faced one of the most difficult obstacles in my pursuit of higher education, an abrupt loss of funding that caused all of my courses to be dropped. This forced me to withdraw from school, and I found myself at a crossroads, unsure of how I would continue my education or if I would ever re-enroll. The emotional toll of this period was overwhelming. For nearly two years, I was out of school, navigating a difficult path filled with uncertainty and self-doubt. It was a time of deep reflection and hardship, where I felt my dreams slipping away. During this dark time, my faith in God and the support of my parents became my lifeline. Without the strength that I drew from my faith, I’m not sure I would have had the courage to continue. It was my belief that God had a plan for me, even when I couldn’t see the path clearly, that kept me moving forward. My parents were instrumental as well, constantly motivating me and reminding me of my potential. Their encouragement gave me the push I needed to not give up on my dream of earning a college degree. In the midst of this difficult period, I worked tirelessly to find ways to fund my education. I sought out scholarships, took on jobs, and saved every penny, determined to re-enroll and finish what I started. It took time, but in 2021, I was finally able to return to school. Coming back was not easy, I had missed two years of coursework and had to adjust to a new pace, but I was more determined than ever to succeed. In December 2023, I proudly graduated with my bachelor’s degree in computer science, a milestone that felt even more significant given the obstacles I had to overcome. This accomplishment was a testament to my resilience, faith, and the unwavering support of my family. But my journey is far from over. I am now pursuing my master’s degree in computer science, continuing to build on the foundation I worked so hard to secure.
