I have been passionate about textiles since I was nine year old, when I learned to crochet in sitting next to my great grandmother, learning this craft that she had learned from her own mother. Once I was handed a crochet hook there was no stopping me, I asked my grandmother, when she could teach me to sew, and I asked my sister, how soon she could teach me to knit. I find connection to my family in this art form. It is because of them that I will be studying textile design in college. Recently, I have shifted my art practice, I am growing up, and growing away from the work I once did. I have become a much more patient maker and in doing so I have started to not just recycle, but also make my own fabrics and textiles. I want to be a part of every step, I want to learn what it is to make a textile by hand and to be in the making of every step of making a garment. I hope to use things that are not typically thought of as textiles as textiles in order to create more sustainable textiles. It hurts me to know that the art form that I love so much produces so much waste, I hope to learn the ways of making and pivot in order to create a cleaner earth, and a more sustainable way of making. In this project my main goal was to create a "Kombucha leather" something that would behave like leather but unlike leather, be made of a renewable resource, that could be made into any shape desired, but the most important thing to me is that it would be much more sustainable than current leathers on the market. While, I may have started in crochet I hope to be there every step of the way, growing the sustainability of the textile design space.
