Education is one of the most powerful tools we have in life. One of my favorite quotes is, “The beautiful thing about learning is that nobody can take it away from you.” This quote reminds me of the value of education and how it can empower individuals to achieve their goals and make a difference in the world. From a young age, I knew I wanted to be someone who helps others learn and grow.
My passion for the arts, especially music, has played a major role in shaping who I am. I have been playing the harp for six years, and I find it not only beautiful but incredibly healing. Throughout my four years in high school, I also played percussion in the band. Playing in the band helped me grow more confident, responsible, and creative, while also teaching me the value of teamwork and how music can be a powerful way to express emotion, connect with others, and grow both personally and as part of a group. Music has and will always be a safe space for me and a way to express myself. Being a member of the band fostered that connection. My experiences with music have inspired me to share that joy with others.
Harp therapy is another way I hope to impact my community. The soothing music coming from the strings of a harp can assist in alleviating pain and calming restless minds. I have seen first hand how peaceful and comforting music can be for people in hospitals, nursing homes, or anyone dealing with stress or anxiety. This motivates me to use my musical abilities not just as a form of art, but as a tool for healing and connection.
This fall, I will attend Washington & Jefferson College, where I plan to major in Human Resources with a dual minor in Education and Music. My goal is to combine these areas of study to make a lasting impact on my community. I’ve always dreamed of becoming a teacher, and my education minor will allow me to pursue certification and work directly with students. Most likely, I will teach music, as it is the area I am most passionate about. I believe that music education can transform lives, just as it did mine.
In the future, I hope to create programs that bring music education and therapy to anyone and everyone that needs and wants it. I want to ensure that all students, regardless of background, have the opportunity to experience the joy and healing that music can bring. Through my degree and experiences, I am committed to using what I’ve learned to give back, inspire, and uplift others through both education and the arts.
