Bold Patience Matters Scholarship
In high school, I never had to study. At the time, I thought that this was a blessing. I assumed that I could breeze through my academic career relying purely on logic. My mother attempted to guide me to create studying habits. I foolishly brushed her off.
My first semester at Indiana University flipped my academic world upside down. I got a B on one of my calculus midterms. I know a B is not the end of the world, but I hope to become a physician. A high GPA is vital for admission to medical school. I knew that I would need to study to get an A on the next midterm. So, I headed to the library. After just 20 minutes, I found myself scrolling endlessly through my phone. I realized that despite my academic success in high school, I had never learned how to study. This discovery sent me into a downward spiral. I was embarrassed that I couldn't do something as mundane as prepare for a math test.
I needed to be patient while I taught myself a new skill. It took me a couple of days to brave the library again. This time, I came prepared. I downloaded an app to lock my phone while I studied and brought a list of what I wanted to accomplish. These minute modifications benefitted me immensely. In the next calculus midterm, I scored a 97! This success prompted me to study for all my classes, making the content more enjoyable and digestible.
This experience taught me that patience, especially with yourself, is essential. Patience allows you to accept your setbacks and carry on. If I hadn't been patient and persisted, I would have compromised my dream career.
