Pet Pals Pack Compassion Award
Growing up as a first‑generation Colombian immigrant, I always felt a deep connection to animals. As my family adjusted to life in the United States, our pets were a constant source of comfort and companionship. They provided unconditional love during a time when everything else felt uncertain. Even when resources were scarce, my parents instilled in me a respect for all living things. I saw how integral animals were to our well‑being and how devastating it could be when a family lacked access to basic veterinary care.
When I left traditional high school to help support my family, I feared my dream of working with animals was out of reach. Earning my GED in 2022 marked a turning point. I returned to school with renewed purpose, determined to pursue higher education. Today, I am a part‑time undergraduate at Palm Beach State College, maintaining a 3.8 GPA while working full-time as a Veterinary Surgical Nurse at Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League. Each day, I assist in surgeries on animals who have been abandoned, abused, or neglected, as well as owned pets. I’ve held their paws as they heal and celebrated when they find their forever homes. Through these experiences, I have witnessed the transformative power of compassionate veterinary care, not only for animals but also for the people who love them.
My goal is to broaden my ability to help by earning both a bachelor’s degree and eventually a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. I plan to transfer to Florida Atlantic University to double major in Biomedical Engineering and Biological Sciences. By combining engineering and veterinary medicine, I hope to develop innovative surgical tools and prosthetics to enhance the quality of life for animals with injuries or congenital defects. I also want to improve access to care for underserved communities, particularly Spanish‑speaking families who often face cultural and financial barriers when seeking treatment for their pets. As a bilingual, first-generation student, I understand these challenges and aim to serve as a bridge between veterinary medicine and the communities that need it most.
Balancing part‑time coursework and a demanding job has not been easy. There are days when I finish school late at night and still wake up before dawn to study before work. However, my experiences have only deepened my resolve. I have learned to manage my time efficiently, advocate for myself, and seek mentorship from veterinarians and professors who believe in my potential. These efforts have prepared me for the rigor of veterinary school and a career dedicated to advancing animal health.
Receiving the Pet Pals Pack Compassion Award would ease the financial strain of pursuing my education while working full-time. It would allow me to enroll in additional science and engineering courses, shadow specialists, and volunteer in outreach clinics without worrying about how I will pay for tuition or textbooks. Most importantly, it would affirm that someone believes in the mission I have committed my life to: protecting animals, advancing veterinary science, and ensuring that compassionate care is available to all families, regardless of their background. Your investment would not only support my education but also help me uplift the communities I serve through research, innovation, and empathy.
Love Island Fan Scholarship
Secrets in the Sand
My brand-new Love Island challenge, “Secrets in the Sand,” combines physical competition, strategic gameplay, and the kind of jaw-dropping reveals that keep fans glued to the screen. Set on the beach, this high-energy event would push Islanders to dig deep, both literally and emotionally, while stirring up drama in true Love Island fashion.
The challenge begins with a large sand pit divided into multiple grid sections. Buried in each section are color-coded “message bottles,” each containing a different type of task. Red bottles hold personal questions or confessions, forcing contestants to reveal secrets or share honest opinions in front of the entire group. Blue bottles contain small but intense physical tasks, such as completing a quick puzzle or doing a set of push-ups before moving forward. Gold bottles carry wildcard twists, the kind of surprises that can flip villa dynamics on their head. These could include swapping partners for the next 24 hours, choosing someone to go on an extra date, or even sending a couple to the Hideaway for the night.
Contestants are paired up, either with their current partner or randomly, for an extra shake-up. Each pair has five minutes to dig up as many bottles as possible, opening them immediately and completing whatever is inside before searching for the next. Truth questions in red bottles must be answered honestly, with no passing allowed, and if the producers wanted to turn up the heat, they could even add a lie detector. Blue bottle tasks must be completed successfully to count, and gold bottle twists take effect instantly, lasting until the next recoupling.
The winning pair is determined by the total number of completed bottles, and their prize would be a romantic reward such as a private dinner under the stars or a luxury spa date. But in Love Island, the true reward, or trouble, often comes from how these challenges reshape relationships and alliances.
What makes “Secrets in the Sand” a perfect fit for the show is its blend of fun, chaos, and unpredictability. The truths spark drama, the physical tasks keep the energy high, and the wildcard twists ensure that the villa’s social balance is never safe for long. In just one afternoon, friendships could be tested, romances could blossom or crumble, and fans would be left with the kind of unforgettable moments that make Love Island so addictive.
Ethel Hayes Destigmatization of Mental Health Scholarship
Mental health is often invisible, yet it touches every part of our lives, shaping how we see ourselves, connect with others, and imagine our futures. My journey with mental health has been deeply personal, and while it has presented challenges, it has also shaped me into someone more compassionate, determined, and driven to create positive change in the world.
For much of my life, I have struggled with anxiety and depression. The pressures of balancing a demanding full-time job, part-time college coursework, and my responsibilities often left me feeling overwhelmed. There were days when getting out of bed felt like the hardest thing I had to do. I learned early on how easily mental health can slip into the background, hidden under the façade of productivity and “being fine.” Yet beneath the surface, I was battling constant self-doubt, exhaustion, and an inner voice that told me I wasn’t doing enough.
At first, I tried to ignore it, telling myself to push through without acknowledging the weight I was carrying. But over time, I realized that pretending my mental health struggles didn’t exist only made them worse. It wasn’t until I began speaking honestly with close friends and seeking professional help that I understood the importance of breaking the silence. That moment of replacing secrecy with openness became the turning point in my journey.
My experiences have profoundly shaped my relationships. I’ve learned to value vulnerability and to approach others with empathy, knowing that everyone is fighting battles we can’t always see. Friends have shared their mental health challenges after I’ve been honest about mine, and those conversations have built deeper connections and trust. I now see relationships not just as sources of support, but as opportunities to actively listen, uplift, and remind others they are not alone.
This journey has also influenced my career aspirations. I currently work as a veterinary nurse, a role that can be both physically and emotionally demanding. The field of veterinary medicine faces its mental health crisis, with high rates of burnout, compassion fatigue, and suicide among professionals. My personal experiences with mental health give me a unique perspective and a strong desire to advocate for mental wellness in the veterinary community. I envision a future where I am not only providing medical care for animals but also creating safe, supportive spaces for the people who care for them.
In terms of my understanding of the world, living with mental health challenges has taught me that strength is not about being unaffected by hardship; it’s about finding ways to move forward while carrying it. It has shown me how vital it is to destigmatize these conversations, especially in cultures and communities where mental health is still treated as something to hide. I believe that the more we share our stories, the more we chip away at that stigma and make it easier for others to seek help without shame.
My goals moving forward are deeply rooted in advocacy, education, and compassion. I plan to continue my studies in Biology, transfer to Florida Atlantic University, and then pursue veterinary school. Alongside my career, I want to use my voice to bring awareness to mental health through public speaking, peer mentorship, and workplace initiatives aimed at supporting the mental well-being of veterinary professionals.
While my journey with mental health has been difficult, it has shaped me into someone resilient, empathetic, and deeply aware of the importance of human connection. I have learned that we cannot always control the challenges we face, but we can control how we respond to them and how we use them to guide our path forward. For me, that means building a life and career where mental health is not just acknowledged but prioritized, where vulnerability is seen as strength, and where no one feels they have to fight their battles in silence.
This scholarship is not just an opportunity for financial support; it represents a shared mission to bring the darkness to light. And like the legacy of Ethel Hayes, I intend to keep speaking up, keep breaking the silence, and keep working toward a future where mental health is treated with the compassion, respect, and urgency it deserves.
For the Love of Pinot Memorial Scholarship and Dr. Rocky J. Deutsch Tribute
My life experiences have shaped my values, my work ethic, and ultimately my career ambitions. From a young age, I was surrounded by animals and developed an early fascination with their behavior, health, and well-being. When I moved from Los Angeles to Colombia as a child, I witnessed the challenges many animals face when access to veterinary care is limited. Stray dogs and cats were a common sight, and I often wished I could help them. Seeing animals in need but lacking the resources to do anything about it left a lasting impression. This early exposure planted the seed of wanting to make a difference in animal welfare, though at the time, I didn’t yet realize it would lead to a career in veterinary medicine.
Years later, after returning to the United States, I began volunteering at a local animal rescue. I assisted with recovery after surgery, took vital signs, cleaned ears, and provided comfort to animals during stressful procedures. I learned how patience, skill, and compassion can transform an animal’s life, from alleviating pain to giving them a second chance at finding a loving home. Those moments weren’t just rewarding; they were formative. They solidified my decision to dedicate my life to this field and showed me the profound impact that dedicated veterinary care can have on both animals and people.
Today, I work full-time as a veterinary nurse at a rescue specializing in high-quality, high-volume spay and neuter surgeries for cats and dogs. My work is fast-paced, challenging, and incredibly rewarding. Every day, I see the tangible results of my efforts: fewer litters of unwanted animals, healthier pets, and grateful adopters. Balancing this demanding job with my college coursework has been difficult at times, but it has taught me perseverance, discipline, and the importance of time management. I’ve learned to push through long days, adapt to unexpected challenges, and remain committed to the animals in my care, even when the work is physically and emotionally exhausting.
I am currently pursuing an Associate in Arts degree and plan to transfer to Florida Atlantic University to earn my Bachelor's degree in Biology before applying to veterinary school. My long-term goal is to specialize in surgery while also dedicating part of my career to community outreach. I want to make veterinary care more accessible, especially in underserved areas, and educate pet owners on preventative care and responsible pet ownership.
My journey has been shaped by the animals I have cared for and the people I have worked alongside. These experiences have confirmed my passion, strengthened my skills, and given me a clear vision for my future. For me, this path is not just a career; it is a lifelong promise to be a voice for the voiceless.
