I plan to pursue a career in Criminal Justice. I am a first-generation graduate high school student and would also be a first-generation college student. I am a great candidate because, although yes, many people face challenges I have been one to overcome the challenges that I have had to endure. Coming from a toxic household with a single mother isn't easy, but I have always strived to go beyond my max and achieve my goals.

Scorenavigator Financial Literacy Scholarship
As the youngest Hispanic daughter of four children, it is safe to say that life hasn’t always been easy for me. I saw firsthand how financial challenges took a toll and shaped my family. My father had gotten arrested before I was born, leaving my mother widowed during her pregnancy and her three children. She worked tirelessly throughout her pregnancy and even more after my birth, sacrificing everything so we could survive. Because of this I was raised by my two older sisters, who were forced to grow up faster than they should have. They way my mother navigated through these struggles taught me the value of hard work. On top of this, I challenged myself academically, taking AP classes and playing sports to strive to excel. Even as I grew up in emotional and mental neglect, without a father figure, chaos, arguments, and tension at home. Even as the “baby” of the family, assumed by many to be spoiled, I rarely felt protected. I watched my siblings and mother endure shouting, rage, and cruelty, learning to absorb the household toxicity in silence. Though I was often the last to feel the brunt of the conflict, I internalized it all, carrying the weight of anger, disappointment, and fear for years. I became a silent observer, a student of my own family’s dysfunction, learning to navigate the toxic patterns without complaint.
I plan to use the financial knowledge that I have gained over the years to create stability and opportunities for myself. Receiving this scholarship signifies more than just financial support. I would also give the opportunity to continue in pursuing my education and move closer to achieving my career goals. Although now that it is only my mom and I living together, college is still a significant challenge for me to have to pay on my own. This scholarship would help me cover the essential expenses which would allow me to focus on my education rather than on financial struggles. With the support of this scholarship, I will be able to strive towards my dreams and build a future I have fought for, reflecting the sacrifices my mother has made for me. The challenges that I have faced have shaped me into the resilient and determined young woman I am today. Through all of my experiences, they have prepared me for the next step into the next chapter of my life.

As the youngest Hispanic daughter of four children, it is safe to say that life hasn’t always been easy for me. My father had gotten arrested before I was born, leaving my mother widowed during her pregnancy and her three children. She worked tirelessly throughout her pregnancy and even more after my birth, sacrificing everything so we could survive. Because of this I was raised by my two older sisters who, unfortunately, had to grow up far too quickly. My mother was always working whatever shift she could obtain to be able to provide for me. Unfortunately, during my early teenage years I fell into a horrible depression. Over time I, adapted navigating the toxic patterns without complaint.
“She’s truly a child of Christ, so sweet, quiet, and obedient.” I force a fake smile as I hear the same words, year after year, because people don’t know the traumas that would occur behind my family’s closed doors. I always kept to myself in an emotional and mental meaning. I had never let anyone fully in because if I consistently get hurt my own family now imagine what an outsider would do to me. Until one had He did. He was perfect, beautiful, unique, oddly weird, and - different - or so I thought. I let down my guard and let him in all the way. I introduced him to meet my family, the people I loved deeply and cared for immensely, despite their flaws and mistakes. I shared my dreams, goals, success, and pain. I opened my true feelings, the ones I was never supposed to speak of. My father, my first real heartbreak, who was never present, not once in my life. Family problems and my traumas. I allowed myself to be loved and unfortunately, I got comfortable with it. But I should’ve kept my heart locked and ice cold as it had always been for love. I shouldn’t have been so vulnerable but ultimately, that is what love does. It hurt in ways I could not bear, because it was real and meaningful.
Regardless of the pain and the struggles I had to endure alone, this first real experience of love built me up to who I am today. It taught me things I didn’t acknowledge about myself and I am grateful because I was able to change unhealthy traits that didn’t need fixing until then. I became stronger, more independent, and emotionally controlled. Above all, I learned that vulnerability doesn’t always mean weakness. It is a rare strength that allows for personal growth and meaningful connections. I am now someone who quietly observes, learns, and adapts, turning past pain into motivation. The hardships of my upbringing, joined with this unexpected lesson, shaped me into this strong, resilient, and determined young woman I am today. A young woman ready to pursue her dreams, face challenges with determination, and embrace life to the fullest, no matter how difficult the journey may be. The trials of my family, the weight I carried silently, and the lessons I have learned from love and resilience have prepared me to step confidently into the next chapter of my life.
