The night my dad found my grandmother unresponsive on her couch was a life-changing night. My dad was sitting on the couch downstairs in our living room and felt the sudden urge to go upstairs to change the air filter. He rarely ever goes upstairs because that was my grandma's space so It was odd that he randomly thought to. He went upstairs and said goodnight to my grandma who was on the couch. however, she didn't respond, so he said it again, and still no response. That's when he realized that something was wrong, so he called my mom and then called 911. My grandma was present physically, but she wasn't really there. I overheard the commotion from my room and decided to see what was going on. I still remember how scary it was to see her completely unaware of her surroundings. She couldn't form any sentences at all, the only thing she could say very clearly was "Jesus". She kept repeating it over and over, "Jesus, Jesus, Jesus" and nothing else.
The EMTs finally showed up and confirmed that she was having a stroke. When I saw them carrying her down the stairs, somehow I had a feeling of calmness. I knew she would be okay, I wasn't sure what gave that reassuring feeling but It was with me the entire time. My grandmother did speech and physical therapy for six months to get her back to how she was before. The doctors said that most people wouldn't have made it with the type of stroke she had, and it was a "miracle" that she was alive. It was no miracle, It was only by the grace of God that she survived and is living right now.
After only six months of therapy, my grandma looked as if she never even experienced a life-altering event. Her speech was back to normal and she could walk again without using a walker. She later revealed her conversation with God to us a few months before the stroke. She said that God spoke to her and said that something would happen to slow her down and give her a period of rest and she didn't know what it was or what would happen but put her faith in him anyway. After that event, I realized God is powerful and that anything can happen in seconds.
I always questioned whether God and heaven were even real, but as I have grown, so has my faith. Reading the bible and learning more about God proved to me that not only is he real, but he is our creator, and the one who gives us life every day.
