    Marie Humphries Memorial Scholarship
My name is Samnang On, and I aim to build a career in education to make a positive impact on my community. I am currently a student at National University, majoring in Interdisciplinary Studies with a multidisciplinary focus. Although becoming an educator was not initially part of my plans, my experiences as a single parent have revealed the importance of my skills and their potential to influence education and youth development. Due to my cultural background and upbringing, including experiencing poverty, I can uniquely relate to students facing similar challenges. Drawing from these experiences, I aim to support students not only academically but also socially, as I believe that holistic development is crucial for their transition into adulthood. My main goal is to create positive change, especially in low-income communities where parental involvement may be limited by daily struggles, which can increase children’s vulnerability to negative societal influences. My motivation and self-drive have always guided my efforts. Receiving a scholarship would provide access to advanced technological resources necessary for research and future projects, which are crucial to my academic journey. Financial support would ease current hardships, allowing me to focus entirely on my studies and achieve my educational goals. I will be the first in my family to earn a college degree, but I am confident that I will not be the last. I strongly believe in the importance of leadership and collaboration, recognizing that these qualities are vital to building a thriving community. My diverse experiences have shaped my identity, fostering compassion, empathy, professionalism, and a dedicated approach to teaching. I have devoted considerable time to researching, analyzing, and applying the knowledge I have gained through both academic studies and life experiences. Additionally, I am passionate about the arts, engaging in activities like playing the guitar, drawing, and spending time in nature. Perseverance is a central aspect of my character, and I am committed to pursuing my goals despite the challenges that arise. While feelings of solitude can be overwhelming at times, my motivation to succeed remains strong. Receiving this scholarship would be deeply meaningful, as it would validate my efforts to make a positive difference in the world. Throughout my life, I have prioritized helping others without expecting anything in return, guided by my core values. Lastly, I wish to acknowledge my English professors, Ian and Mullen. Historically, I exhibited limited interest and engagement in English classes, primarily due to my background; I was able to read proficiently despite coming from a household where neither of my parents spoke English. Additionally, my experiences in class were marred by frequent ridicule, which contributed to my disinterest. Nevertheless, the mentorship and guidance of my English professors illuminated my innate potential, fostering a newfound enthusiasm for the subject. Consequently, I now aspire to teach my inaugural English course, recognizing that effective communication constitutes a fundamental aspect of human interaction. I believe in supporting others because I genuinely want to, and I sincerely wish for their success, especially for those who need it most. Thank you for your time and consideration. I genuinely appreciate this opportunity.
    Healing Self and Community Scholarship
Hi, my name is Samnang On, and the community is very important for affordable and accessible supportive engagement because it is not an individual issue; it is a societal issue that affects our public safety and mental health. The phrase 'we are all in this together' holds great value in understanding each other's values and sense of belonging due to the high expectations of living and placement in today's society. Whereby, classism, racism, and sexism are problematic in media consumption. Outreach is a clear step toward bringing the community together, which should be affordable and accessible, with volunteers committed to the mission and goals of healing. I live in Oakland, California, and every day I see lost souls gathering around campfires and churches looking for hope and answers. Therefore, if we could spread awareness and offer affordable mental health support through community outreach, it would help not only families but also individuals who feel help is lost and who feel isolated from their community. I do my weekend jogs around Lake Merritt, and I see elders offering free meditation and Tai Chi to anyone who likes to join. Free outdoor activities are another great way to support without spending any money, and they're also therapeutic. Thank you for your time. I hope this helps me win the scholarship, which I can use to support my family's needs, as being a single dad is financially and mentally challenging without proper supportive materials.

    Sola Family Scholarship
Hi, my name is Samnang On, and I am a full-time single father. Yes, I am male. I am writing not to disregard single mothers, but I’ve never come across a scholarship that honors single fathers—fathers who never give up hope and love their children more than anything in the world. Fathers who wait in the rain and take on responsibilities many don’t think possible because, as a single dad, they are often labeled as just someone who occasionally picks up their children or pays for things. But not this father. I am strong and passionate about being the best parent I can be, and my kids mean everything to me. There have been many times when we almost became homeless, lived in poverty, had nothing to eat, and I fell into depression. Yet, no one seemed to notice because I was the dad, not the mom. This is not to criticize single moms, but I believe there should be recognition for them too, because I know there are good men out there who love their kids just as much as I do. Men who understand it takes more than a nine-to-five job to raise a child—it takes education, dedication, and most importantly, love. The mother left us when my son was two and my daughter was only six months old, and we had almost nothing. I sold my only car to pay rent. I attended community college and earned a degree in Language Arts. I would put my kids to bed around 10PM, then start studying. I studied tirelessly until 3AM, then did it all over again the next day. I remember my son and daughter sleeping peacefully as I studied, praying to God that I would make it through the next day. Looking back, I am so proud of myself for that journey. I never knew the strength I had inside or the love that pushed me so far that I couldn't see my past. Strangers at the bus stop would often ask me, "It's your day to watch the kids, huh?" I would smile and say, "It’s my day every day," and I wouldn't change it for the world. My son is now enrolled in high school, and my daughter in middle school. The journey is just beginning. I know I'm not a single mom, nor was I raised by one, but I want to highlight that there are dads, too—dads who love just as much as moms. Thank you for your time. If I win this scholarship, it would mean the world to me and my kids, because God knows that being a single parent, full-time student, and working a full-time job is financially and mentally challenging.
    Shop Home Med Scholarship
Aloha, my name is Samnang On, and you can call me Sam. Before my mother passed, she was paralyzed from the waist down due to a tumor she developed on her spinal cord, and she was diagnosed Alzheimer'smer's disease. For years, I cared for and witnessed her ups and downs, her mind drifting in empty seas, but she always came back. My father taught me what love is and what a real man does when times are tough. He stayed by her side until the very end, through flying dishes, angry misunderstandings, and tears of joy when she recognized where she was. My mother is my heart and soul—she is everything—and she showed me that all we need is love. Additionally, we had no money to do much. My parents and I are Cambodian refugees. I came here when I was two years old, and every day was a struggle. We collected cans, cardboard, and other items to sell, which helped put dinner on the table. When she became paralyzed, everything changed. My father stopped working to care for her, and I had just finished high school. So, I did what any son would do—I took on the bills and helped support my family. Every day, I would come home and find my mother sitting at the door, waiting for someone—or maybe it was just me. I remember it like it was yesterday. Although the change for her transition was difficult, we did everything possible to keep her life familiar because we hoped her memories would gradually return. My dad and I prepared food, while my sister changed her diaper and tended to other needs she had. Fast-forward to the day she passed, which was a nightmare I hate to relive. That day, I almost lost myself, but I had to stay strong for my siblings. A month later, my son was born, and two years after that, my daughter. Those days were the happiest of my life. But my daughter's mother had other plans and left us when my daughter was only six months old. Why are these days so important? Because they shaped me into a father who loves unconditionally, like his mother. My mother always encouraged me to pursue an education, hoping to give me what she couldn't when she was alive, and to provide a better life for me. So, when I lost my job and almost became homeless with my kids, I went back to school and kept going because I knew it would make a difference in my life and theirs. These experiences of poverty during her life taught me that love and strength are what I need to keep pushing forward, and her words still echo in me today. I am pursuing my passion to become the teacher I’ve always wanted to be, because I know there are kids out there with similar stories who need someone who’s lived the same life, someone who cares unconditionally, and can relate to them. This scholarship would help me tremendously because, as a single parent and a student, especially during these challenging economic times in our country, all I need is a little help. I hope someone out there can hear my plea. Thank you, and I wish you the best. Unfortunately, I don't have a recent photo of my mother. It's all with my father, who lives out of town and doesn't have the strength to dig in the attic. Therefore, this is our old family photo.

    Dr. Samuel Attoh Legacy Scholarship
Throughout my life, I have encountered the belief that "people live just to die." However, I perceive existence through a different lens: I believe that we live to be remembered, and this notion of legacy is paramount to my understanding of life. My approach to living is not one of resignation to the inevitability of time but rather an active engagement with it, seeking to make a difference in my own life and the lives of others. It resonates with the familiar adage, "You only live once," prompting the question of why one should not fully engage in life's experiences. Growing up in an environment marked by poverty, I was acutely aware that my circumstances were not reflective of my potential. The struggles within my family—visible in my parents' weary expressions—were compounded by arguments and dysfunction. My childhood experience included nights spent hungry and searching for solace within myself through artistic expression, as I envisioned the places I longed to be. My formative years were profoundly shaped by the harsh realities of scarcity, which led my parents to discover the value in reclaiming cardboard boxes and aluminum cans. Beginning at the age of four, I participated in dumpster diving to contribute to my family's survival. This introduction to economic hardship instilled in me the understanding that education was essential for breaking the cycle of poverty. The intersection of personal experiences and societal observations illuminated for me the obstacles faced by individuals from underprivileged backgrounds. Many are hindered by systemic barriers related to financial resources and limited familial support, which culminate in diminished opportunities for educational attainment. My journey took a significant turn when I became a single parent after my children's mother departed shortly after their birth. Despite working a minimum-wage job, I soon realized the inadequacy of my income to support my children comfortably. Subsequently, I was compelled to leave my job due to childcare constraints. This pivotal moment led me to enroll at Laney College, where I earned an Associate's degree in Language Arts, becoming the first member of my family to achieve a college degree. Nevertheless, I recognized that this accomplishment alone would not suffice in fulfilling my aspirations of becoming an educator. Thus, I further pursued a Bachelor's degree in Interdisciplinary Studies with an emphasis on Multiple Subjects at National University. However, I currently face significant financial challenges as a full-time employee, a student, and a single parent. My income is insufficient to cover the expenses associated with my educational pursuits and familial obligations. Driven by passion and a strong desire to contribute meaningfully to my community through education, I seek support in this endeavor. I appreciate your time and consideration.

My primary goal is to create positive change, especially in low-income communities where parental engagement may be limited due to daily struggles, which increases children’s vulnerability to negative societal influences. My intrinsic motivation and self-drive have consistently guided my efforts. Receiving a scholarship would provide me with access to advanced technological resources necessary for research and future projects, which are essential to achieving my academic goals. Financial support would alleviate my current hardships, enabling me to focus entirely on my studies and ultimately achieve my educational objectives, and one day make a positive difference in many lives. Furthermore, the fundamental values of being an educator include cultivating empathy within culturally and socioeconomically diverse societies, as well as demonstrating a willingness to make sacrifices for individuals seeking equitable opportunities to achieve their educational objectives. Consequently, it is imperative that educators confront the challenges posed by economic disparities that exist in society. Last but not least, I will be the first member of my family to attain a college degree; however, I am confident I will not be the last. I firmly believe in the importance of leadership and collaboration, recognizing that these qualities are crucial for fostering a thriving community. My diverse experiences have fundamentally shaped my identity, cultivating qualities such as compassion, empathy, professionalism, and a committed ideological approach to teaching. I have invested considerable time in researching, analyzing, and applying the knowledge I have gained through both academic pursuits and life experiences. Additionally, I have a passion for the arts, engaging in activities such as playing the guitar, drawing, and spending time in nature. Passionate perseverance is a core aspect of my character, and I am committed to pursuing my goals despite the challenges they present. Although feelings of solitude can be overwhelming at times, my motivation to succeed remains unwavering. Receiving this scholarship opportunity would be profoundly meaningful, as it represents external validation of my efforts to make a positive impact in the world. Throughout my life, I have prioritized giving to others without expectation of reciprocation, guided by my values. I believe in helping others because I genuinely want to, and I sincerely wish them success, especially those who may need such support more than I do. Thank you for your time and consideration. I truly appreciate the opportunity.
