Promising Pathways - Hard of Hearing Scholarship
I am currently studying for entrance into my local pharmacy program to become a pharmacist. This has been a lifelong passion of mine that I hope to pursue as a career for the remainder of my working days. While attempting to achieve this goal, my hard of hearing has made it difficult to learn. With a busy classroom environment, it is often difficult for me to hear the teacher and grasp the concepts they are talking about. I often resort to the notes on the screen, or outside resources in order for me to obtain all of the pertinent information. I have also requested teachers and professors to wear a microphone to assist me during lectures. I am Asian American having been adopted as a three-year-old from China. I was born with a bilateral cleft lip and palate and was abandoned by my biological parents at birth. When adopted, I was not speaking at all and underwent five years of aggressive speech therapy. I have undergone seven major facial surgeries. Four months after being adopted, I was diagnosed as hearing impaired and have had numerous hearing procedures. I wear cochlear implants. Starting my junior year in high school, I began taking college courses that helped prepare me for the pharmacy program. I took numerous science courses including chemistry, anatomy, biology, physiology, and participated in a study of antibiotics. These studies have solidified my interest in a pharmacology career and have prepared me for the rigors of pharmacy school. I graduated with a 3.98 GPA and an ACT score of 34. I will have completed all the prerequisites for entrance into pharmacy school at the end of the 24-25 school year, and am currently maintaining a 4.0 GPA in college. I have been working in a pharmacy environment since the age of 17. I began my career in retail pharmacy and after one year I took a position at The University of Kansas Health System Outpatient pharmacy as a technician. I received my certification in January 2024. It has been a privilege to work alongside experienced pharmacists observing their everyday practices and responsibilities. These experiences have only confirmed my career choice as a pharmacist. Although I recognize the importance of accessible retail pharmacy, as I already have stated, my immediate professional goal is to work in a hospital or clinic setting. I want to be part of a medical team and collaborate with physicians as they prescribe appropriate medication for patients. I want to be on the cutting edge of introducing new medication to physicians. I want to ensure that patients understand the benefits and side effects of medications they are prescribed. I am particularly interested in developing treatments related to the immune system, including chemotherapy drugs. My long-term goal is to pursue a master’s degree in business administration. Along with my Pharm.D. degree, this will allow me to take a more active role within the healthcare system. In this role, I will be able to broadly influence policies that will directly improve patient care, while also guiding pharmacists in the expanding role they have in hospitals. Overall, my personal, educational, and professional experiences have all contributed to my goal of becoming a pharmacist. The challenges I have faced have clearly provided an understanding of the importance of appropriate medications to extend life, and combat disease and infections. I understand the use of medications for effective pain management. My academic accomplishments and professional experience have demonstrated my commitment to the field and readiness for pharmacy school. I look forward to attending pharmacy school and graduating with a Pharm.D. degree.

My experience as a single child growing up with a single mother has taught me many things through her hard work and leadership and has shown me time and time again to be resilient in the face of challenges. She has shown me how to be responsible, determined, and kind. She has shown me how to be responsible throughout my entire life. Having only one source of income has made things challenging and has demanded the need to be responsible for your well-being and the care of your family. Financial constraints have necessitated growing up faster than most of my peers. Having gotten a job at 15, I have learned to be responsible with money at a younger age than most. I have learned how to properly budget my money and take responsibility for my own life. This is shown through maintaining high grades and a job at the same time. I have learned how to stay organized and remain focused on my future goals. My mother’s determination and kindness are one of the many things. Her many sacrifices have led me to be determined throughout life’s many challenges. She has had two jobs for many years to be able to assist me throughout my life goals of going to college. Her selflessness has afforded me many opportunities in life that I could not have had without her. Her wish to have a child at a young age allowed me to be adopted from China and be able to grow up in a prosperous and healthy environment. She has taken care of my many medical needs, including speech problems, hearing impairment, and my cleft lip and palate, for me to have the best chances of succeeding in any of my dreams. I now want to be able to pay my mother’s selfless love forward by being able to pay the kindness forward. My goal is to become a hospital pharmacist to help assist physicians in the everyday treatment of patients. My personal background as a child of a single mother gives me an advantage when it comes to being a pharmacist. Pharmacy demands compassion to help others, and my mother’s qualities have shaped me into a person who is able to give back to the community. In conclusion, my mother’s qualities of responsibility, determination, and kindness have shaped me into the person I am today. Today, I am motivated to make a positive impact on others. My mother's example continues to guide me as I endeavor to embody these values in all aspects of my life.
