The hospital lights were cold and bright, an IV dripping slowly into my arm, my body heavy, my mind and heart racing. That moment born from one mistake and peer pressure was the wake-up call that changed everything. But the person who truly helped me rise from that low point was my mother. My mother’s strength shaped how I see myself. She didn’t give long speeches or force change. She simply acted. When I was losing direction, failing classes, fighting, and falling into the wrong crowd. She placed me in a new school. She gave me a second chance without judgment. She believed in me in silence. Her example taught me that leadership isn’t loud, it’s consistent, patient, and rooted in love, Inspired by her, I began to rebuild. I went from F’s and C’s to honor roll status. I stopped fighting with my hands and started fighting with my pencil. I picked up my siblings every day, becoming their guide the way my mother had been mine. Eventually, my younger brother took over that role, a sign that the leadership I modeled was working. I carried these values into my community. I joined cooking clubs, explored basketball and stunts, and stepped into tech and nail programs. Through the DYCD Young Shark Competition, I helped pitch an app to support immigrants in accessing education and resources. Winning that challenge helped me realize my own ability to lead with purpose and vision. It wasn’t just about the app. It was about stepping into my role as a changemaker. As a soon to be first-generation student, I’m building a legacy rooted in resilience and consistency. My mother’s quiet strength taught me that leadership means uplifting others even when you’re still healing yourself. My mom not being able to finish school due to her obstacles at home encourages me to keep fighting when things get hard and don’t let circumstances control my outcome in life. I now try to help and encourage my peers and family to discover their own vision, just as I found mine. I don’t know exactly what I’ll become, but I know I’ll keep giving back because someone once gave me the chance to rise. Her example motivates me to guide others. To show them that even when your goals feel out of reach, you can still build something powerful. The hands that once fought now build. The voice that once doubted now leads. And the girl who once felt lost is now completing the mission of helping others find their way.
