I plan to graduate from college with my BSN. I love helping others, and I take pride in making others feel better even when I'm not necessarily feeling it. So, becoming a nurse is undeniably an area of much success for me in the future. As a student-athlete, I value my education above all else. Although I am good at basketball, it is not a long-term goal of mine. Therefore, I hope to earn scholarship money to support me through my college years so I can focus primarily on my education rather than sports. I want to enjoy this next chapter of my life. I am skilled in reading, writing, technology, science, math, anatomy, singing, and more. I know I would be a great candidate for numerous scholarship opportunities.

EverGreen Trails of Service Scholarship
I chose to pursue nursing because it sits at the intersection of compassion, science, and service—three things that have consistently shaped who I am. My desire to become a nurse was not formed in a single moment, but through years of observing the impact that dedicated healthcare professionals can have on individuals and families. With several members of my family in the nursing field, I grew up understanding that nursing is more than a job—it is a commitment to advocating for others, especially in moments when they are most vulnerable.
As a student-athlete, I have learned how to remain calm under pressure, lead with intention, and support those around me through challenges. Basketball has strengthened my resilience and discipline, but it has also deepened my sense of empathy and awareness of others’ needs. These qualities naturally align with the role of a nurse, where critical thinking and emotional intelligence are equally important. I have come to value not only the technical aspects of patient care, but also the human connection that can make a lasting difference in someone’s healing process.
My planned specialty is critical care nursing, where I hope to work with patients experiencing acute and life-threatening conditions. I am drawn to this field because it requires quick decision-making, strong clinical skills, and the ability to remain composed in high-stress environments. More importantly, critical care nurses often support patients and families during some of the most difficult moments of their lives. I want to be a steady, reassuring presence—someone who can provide both skilled care and emotional support when it matters most.
In addition to critical care, I am deeply interested in working with underserved populations. Many communities face barriers to accessing quality healthcare, and I want to be part of the effort to close those gaps. My goal is to ensure that every patient, regardless of their background, feels seen, heard, and respected. This commitment to equity and advocacy is a driving force behind my career path.
While I have not yet received specialized training in stoma care, I am very open to pursuing it as part of my professional development. I understand the importance of this type of care in improving patients’ quality of life and dignity, and I would welcome the opportunity to expand my skill set in this area to better serve a diverse range of patients.
Service has always been a core value in my life, and that is reflected in my family as well. My mother is an elementary school social worker for the Baltimore County Public School System, where she plays a vital role in supporting students and families. Through her work, she has become a leader in her community, helping to shape young lives and create lasting impact. Watching her advocate for children and provide guidance during challenging circumstances has deeply influenced my own desire to serve others in a meaningful way.
Ultimately, nursing is more than a career choice for me—it is a purpose. It is a way for me to combine my strengths, my experiences, and my passion for helping others into a profession that creates real and lasting change.
Wieland Nurse Appreciation Scholarship
I didn’t arrive at nursing through a single defining moment—it was shaped over time by the people who raised me, the environments that challenged me, and the quiet realization that I wanted my life’s work to center around helping others in their most vulnerable moments.
Growing up, I was surrounded by strong, compassionate women in my family who worked in healthcare. Watching them showed me that nursing is more than a career—it is a commitment to showing up for people when they need it most. I saw how they balanced strength with empathy, how they advocated for their patients, and how they treated each individual with dignity. Their influence planted the first seed in me, showing me that making a difference in someone’s life does not always require grand gestures, but rather consistency, care, and heart.
As I matured, that seed grew through my own experiences. Being a student-athlete taught me discipline, resilience, and leadership. Basketball pushed me physically and mentally, but more importantly, it taught me how to care about people beyond myself. I learned how to recognize when a teammate was struggling, how to offer support, and how to lead with both accountability and compassion. Those lessons translated naturally into my desire to pursue nursing—a field where teamwork, trust, and the ability to remain calm under pressure are essential.
My passion for nursing is rooted in the impact I know I can make. I want to be present for patients not just medically, but emotionally. I want to advocate for individuals who feel unheard, especially in underserved communities where access to quality healthcare can be limited. Nursing allows me to combine my academic drive with my desire to serve, creating a career that is both purposeful and deeply human. Whether it is providing comfort during uncertainty, educating patients about their health, or simply being a reassuring presence, I am drawn to the meaningful connections that define this profession.
Ultimately, I chose nursing because it aligns with who I am at my core. It challenges me to grow, pushes me to lead with empathy, and gives me the opportunity to create lasting impact in ways that matter. Every experience I have had—on the court, in the classroom, and within my family—has guided me toward this path, and I am committed to honoring that journey by becoming a nurse who leads with both skill and compassion.
Lastly, I found out about this scholarship through my college’s scholarship resources and ongoing efforts to seek out opportunities that support my journey as a nursing student.
WCEJ Thornton Foundation Low-Income Scholarship
Attending higher education is a critical step in transforming both my personal aspirations and my ability to serve others in a meaningful, lasting way. As a nursing student balancing academics, athletics, and work, I have already experienced how discipline, resilience, and time management shape not only success, but character. Higher education is not simply a pathway to a career for me—it is a foundation that equips me with the clinical knowledge, critical thinking skills, and ethical responsibility required to care for individuals during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives.
My long-term goal is to become a highly skilled and compassionate registered nurse, and eventually advance my education to take on leadership or specialized clinical roles. Through higher education, I will gain evidence-based knowledge and hands-on experience that will allow me to provide safe, effective, and patient-centered care. Nursing is a profession that demands both intellectual rigor and emotional intelligence, and my education will strengthen both. It will prepare me to advocate for patients, communicate effectively within interdisciplinary teams, and respond confidently in high-pressure situations.
Beyond my personal career goals, I am deeply committed to creating a positive impact within underserved and low-income communities. Coming from a background where access to resources is not always guaranteed, I understand firsthand the barriers that can prevent individuals from receiving adequate healthcare and education. I plan to use my nursing education to bridge those gaps by promoting health literacy, providing compassionate care, and supporting preventative health initiatives. Whether through community outreach, patient education, or mentorship, I want to be someone who not only treats illness but also empowers individuals to take control of their health.
Additionally, I hope to serve as a role model for others who may feel limited by their circumstances. As a student-athlete and future nurse, I want to demonstrate that it is possible to pursue demanding goals while staying committed to service and community. I plan to give back by mentoring younger students, especially those interested in healthcare careers, and encouraging them to pursue higher education despite financial or personal challenges.
Higher education will allow me to turn my passion for helping others into a profession that creates tangible change. It will give me the tools to not only improve individual patient outcomes but also contribute to broader efforts that address healthcare disparities. Ultimately, my goal is to leave every space I enter better than I found it—whether that is through the care I provide, the knowledge I share, or the lives I impact.
Mighty Memorial Scholarship
I didn’t choose nursing in a single moment—it grew quietly over time, shaped by the people I love and the moments that stayed with me long after they passed.
Some of my earliest memories of healthcare come from watching the women in my family step into roles that required both strength and softness at the same time. I saw how they carried responsibility not just for tasks, but for people—for their comfort, their dignity, and their trust. Nursing, to me, was never just a profession; it was a calling rooted in compassion, resilience, and an unspoken promise to show up when others need you most. That understanding stayed with me.
As I grew older, I began to realize how deeply care can impact a person’s experience in vulnerable moments. There is something powerful about being the person who brings calm into chaos, who advocates when someone feels unheard, and who offers not just treatment, but reassurance. I became drawn to that space—the space where science meets humanity, where skill is guided by empathy.
My journey as a student-athlete strengthened that desire even more. Basketball taught me how to lead, how to stay composed under pressure, and how to push through physical and mental exhaustion for something bigger than myself. But more importantly, it taught me how to care about people in a deeper way—how to recognize when someone is struggling, how to support a team, and how to put others before myself. Those same qualities are at the heart of nursing.
What truly inspires me is the impact I know I can have. I want to be the nurse who listens when a patient feels overlooked. The one who brings comfort to families during uncertain times. The one who understands that healing is not just physical—it is emotional, mental, and deeply personal. In communities where access to quality care is limited, I want to be an advocate and a source of trust.
Nursing represents everything I value: service, connection, and purpose. It is a career where I can combine my drive, my compassion, and my lived experiences to make a difference that is both immediate and lasting. And for me, there is no greater calling than that. I am committed to carrying that purpose with me into every patient interaction, knowing that even the smallest act of care can leave a lasting impact. Through nursing, I will not only change lives—I will honor the experiences that inspired me to begin this journey in the first place.
Marlene Manning Scholarship
Growing up, I learned early that ambition is not just about personal success—it is about creating opportunities where they once felt limited. As a student-athlete and nursing major, I have worked to embody that belief in every space I enter, whether on the basketball court, in the classroom, or within my community. My journey has been shaped by discipline, resilience, and a deep desire to make a meaningful impact on others' lives.
I am currently a collegiate athlete and nursing student, balancing the physical and mental demands of competitive basketball with the academic rigor of a healthcare-focused education. Being a student-athlete has taught me invaluable lessons about time management, perseverance, and leadership. As a defensive player of the year in high school and now a member of my college team’s leadership group, I have learned how to uplift others, hold myself accountable, and push through challenges even when circumstances are difficult. These experiences have directly translated into my academic life, where I approach my studies with the same intensity and focus.
My decision to pursue nursing stems from both personal inspiration and a desire to give back. With several family members in the nursing field, I have witnessed firsthand the impact compassionate and skilled healthcare professionals can have on individuals and families. I aspire to become a nurse who not only provides excellent clinical care but also advocates for underserved communities, ensuring that every patient feels seen, heard, and valued. My long-term goal is to work in critical care or community health, where I can address both immediate medical needs and broader health disparities.
As someone with roots in Maryland, I understand the importance of community and the responsibility to give back to the places that helped shape me. Prince George’s County and surrounding areas are filled with talented, driven students who often face financial barriers when pursuing higher education. I see myself reflected in those students—individuals with big dreams who simply need access and support to reach their full potential. This scholarship represents more than financial assistance; it is an investment in students committed to making a difference.
Financially, even with scholarships, the cost of college extends far beyond tuition. Expenses such as textbooks, clinical supplies, housing necessities, and daily living costs can quickly become overwhelming. As a student balancing academics and athletics, I have a limited schedule, making additional financial support crucial. This scholarship would ease that burden, allowing me to focus more fully on my education and clinical training without the constant stress of financial strain.
Beyond personal benefit, receiving this scholarship would further motivate me to continue giving back. I have always believed that success is not measured solely by individual achievement, but by the impact one has on others. Whether through mentoring younger athletes, supporting peers academically, or one day serving patients in vulnerable communities, I am committed to using every opportunity I am given to uplift those around me.
In honoring Marlene Manning’s legacy, I aim to carry forward her passion for supporting the next generation. My journey is still unfolding, but my purpose is clear: to work hard, remain grounded in service, and create pathways for others, just as this scholarship is helping me create one. With continued dedication and support, I am confident in my ability to succeed in the nursing field and make a lasting, positive impact in my community and beyond.
Kenneth Hartzler Memorial Basketball Scholarship
Basketball has never just been a game to me—it’s been a space where I’ve learned who I am. As a guard for Shepherd University, I’ve come to understand that what I love most about basketball isn’t just scoring or winning—it’s the responsibility that comes with being on the court. Every possession is a chance to lead, to communicate, and to make the people around me better.
I’ve always taken pride in being a defensive player and a facilitator. Back in high school at Howard High School, I was named Defensive Player of the Year and helped lead my team to a state championship. Defense taught me discipline—how to stay locked in, anticipate, and outwork my opponent. Even now in college, where I’ve appeared in nearly 30 games with multiple starts, I still carry that mindset. Whether it’s getting steals, creating opportunities, or making the extra pass, I value doing the little things that don’t always show up on the stat sheet but win games.
What I truly love about basketball is how it demands growth. You can’t hide on the court. It exposes your weaknesses, but it also gives you the opportunity to improve every single day. I’ve had to learn how to respond to pressure, accept criticism, and stay mentally tough—especially transitioning from high school to college and transferring programs. That journey shaped me into someone who is coachable, focused, and determined, both as an athlete and as a person.
Basketball has also given me structure and purpose. As a nursing major, balancing academics and athletics isn’t easy, but the game has taught me time management, resilience, and accountability. Those same qualities will carry over into my future career.
If I am awarded this scholarship, I will use the money to invest in both my education and my future. A significant portion will go toward covering tuition, books, and clinical expenses associated with nursing school. Nursing is a demanding field, and having financial support would allow me to focus more on my studies and clinical performance without the constant stress of financial burden.
Additionally, I would use part of the scholarship to support my athletic development. This could go toward training, recovery, or maintaining my health throughout the season. My body has endured a lot of wear and tear. It is always nice to book specialized treatment outside of school facilities. The athletic trainers are already short-staffed, so I am mindful not to ask for too much of their time during the week. I understand that taking care of my body is essential not only for performance but also for longevity in the sport and as I age in general.
Beyond that, this scholarship represents something bigger to me. It’s not just financial support—it’s an investment in who I am becoming. It would allow me to continue pursuing excellence both on the court and in the classroom, while also preparing me to give back in the future as a healthcare professional.
Basketball has given me discipline, confidence, and a sense of identity. With the support of this scholarship, I plan to take everything the game has taught me and use it to build a future where I can lead, serve, and make an impact—both as an athlete and as a nurse.
