My college journey has been challenging, but it’s also been incredibly meaningful. I experienced bullying that affected my confidence and made daily life overwhelming. There were times I wanted to give up—but through prayer and faith, I found the strength to keep going. Choosing to stay and pursue my education became a turning point in my life.
During this time, I learned the value of self-care and protecting my mental health. I began setting boundaries, prioritizing peace, and became passionate about mental health awareness—not just for myself, but for others who may be silently struggling.
Painting became my outlet, helping me express emotions words couldn’t. Nature also played a huge role in my healing. Whether walking through on trails or watching the sky shift, I found peace and clarity outdoors.
These experiences shaped me into someone who is resilient, faith-centered, and committed to personal growth. My life goals focus on living with purpose, achieving financial freedom, and serving others. As a finance major, I plan to create multiple income streams—including owning a braiding salon—and use what I’ve learned to help others gain financial confidence.
I’m passionate about helping people overcome their own struggles. My journey taught me that strength is built through challenges, and I want to be proof that rising above is always possible. I believe my life experience, compassion, and drive make me a strong candidate.

SCFU Scholarship for HBCU Business Students
Economic empowerment is one of the most powerful tools for creating lasting change, especially in underrepresented communities that have historically been denied access to financial resources, education, and opportunities. As a Finance student and aspiring entrepreneur, I envision a future where business innovation is not just about profit, but about people—uplifting communities, closing opportunity gaps, and building generational wealth. My career goals are grounded in a commitment to driving social equity and using financial literacy and entrepreneurship to make a meaningful difference.
Growing up, I witnessed how a lack of financial education limited the potential of people around me. I saw individuals working tirelessly, often in multiple jobs, and still struggling to make ends meet. The problem wasn’t a lack of effort—it was a lack of access. This reality became one of the reasons I chose to study finance. I wanted to understand how money works so I could teach others how to use it as a tool for freedom.
In college, my path wasn’t always easy. I faced bullying and personal challenges that at times made me question my worth and ability to succeed. But through resilience, faith, and the support of my loved ones, I pushed forward. It made me stronger and more determined to be a source of encouragement and empowerment for others. I now understand that my journey is not just about me—it’s about the lives I can impact.
My vision for economic empowerment centers on education, accessibility, and entrepreneurship. I believe that when people are equipped with financial knowledge they are better positioned to make informed decisions that positively affect their families and communities. I plan to become a licensed financial advisor and offer financial literacy workshops in underserved areas. These sessions will not only teach practical skills but also instill confidence in individuals who may have never felt in control of their financial future.
In addition to working in finance, I also plan to open my own braiding salon—a business that reflects both my creative side and my passion for empowering others. My salon will serve as more than just a place for hairstyling; it will be a community hub where beauty, culture, and education come together. I plan to provide job opportunities, mentorship for young entrepreneurs, and in-house financial literacy sessions for both clients and staff. By blending business innovation with community care, I hope to redefine what a small business can be in an underserved area.
Entrepreneurship has the power to transform lives—not just for business owners, but for everyone their businesses touch. By creating a business that is rooted in equity and purpose, I want to show others that success doesn’t have to come at the expense of values. In fact, when businesses prioritize people and social good, they become powerful agents for change. Through my salon and future financial services, I will focus on creating opportunities where they are needed most, breaking down barriers, and lifting others as I rise.
My long-term goal is to create a model that can be replicated across different communities—businesses that are financially successful but also socially responsible. I want to mentor other aspiring entrepreneurs, especially young women of color, and show them that they too can build businesses that make a difference. With the right tools, support, and vision, I believe we can build a future where economic justice is the norm.
In everything I do, my mission will remain the same: to use my education and experience in finance and entrepreneurship to promote equity, empower communities, and create spaces where people feel seen, valued, and capable of achieving their dreams.
Leela Shah "Be Bold" Womens' Empowerment Scholarship
From the very beginning, my mother has been my biggest inspiration, my strongest supporter, and the one person who has consistently reminded me of my purpose. Her love, sacrifices, and encouragement have shaped me into the person I am today. As a Finance student, my goals are rooted in building a future that not only honors her influence but also reflects my values—especially my faith, which has been a guiding force through every challenge.
My mother has always believed in me, even when I struggled to believe in myself. She never let me give up, no matter the setback. Through academic challenges, emotional struggles, and moments of self-doubt, she reminded me that I am capable, worthy, and called to something greater. Her words, backed by action and prayer, kept me grounded and focused. She showed me that strength doesn’t always come from having all the answers—it comes from having faith in the process and the courage to keep going.
There were many times when I felt like giving up—when the weight of expectations, the impact of bullying, and my own insecurities made me question my path. But my faith kept me going. I leaned on God through prayer, asking for direction, strength, and peace. And often, the answer came through my mother’s voice, reminding me of who I am and what I’m here to do. That spiritual foundation continues to guide every decision I make.
As I pursue a degree in Finance, my goal is to become a financial advisor and use my knowledge to serve others—especially those in underserved communities who lack access to financial education. I want to help people build confidence in managing their money, breaking cycles of poverty, and creating long-term stability. Financial literacy is life-changing, and I believe it’s one of the most powerful ways to uplift families and communities.
In addition to a career in finance, I also dream of owning a braiding salon—a place where creativity, confidence, and empowerment come together. My vision is to create not only a business, but a safe, welcoming space that provides more than just beauty services. I want to offer financial workshops and mentorship opportunities, blending my two passions: financial empowerment and self-expression.
Most importantly, I want to build a future that allows me to give back to my mother. She has poured so much into me—her time, energy, love, and faith—and I want to repay that by making her proud and ensuring she experiences the rewards of her sacrifices. I dream of supporting her financially, helping her rest, travel, and enjoy life, just as she has helped me live mine with purpose.
This scholarship would bring me closer to that vision. It would support my education, help me build the foundation for my career, and allow me to create a life rooted in service, success, and faith. With my mother’s strength and my faith leading the way, I am committed to making a lasting impact—on my family, my community, and the world around me.
Willie Mae Rawls Scholarship
As a student, I am currently earning my degree in Finance. My journey has been far from easy, but it has shaped who I am and who I strive to become. One of the most defining experiences of my life was overcoming bullying in college. It was a time when I questioned myself, my worth, and my place in the world. However, rather than allowing that pain to define me, I leaned on my faith, stayed the course, and transformed adversity into strength. Today, I am determined to use my experiences and education to make a positive impact on the lives of others.
Being bullied affected me emotionally, mentally, and academically. There were moments when giving up felt like the easier option. But through prayer, self-reflection, and support, I found the strength to push forward. That period in my life taught me the value of resilience, the importance of mental health, and the power of faith. I realized that I wanted to help others—not just survive tough times, but grow through them.
That’s why I chose to study finance. I believe financial literacy is one of the most powerful tools we can give someone. Many people, especially in underserved communities, struggle financially simply because they lack access to the right information and guidance. As a future financial advisor, I want to educate others about managing money, building credit, saving, and investing. My goal is to empower people to take control of their finances and create a future they can be proud of.
In addition to working in finance, I have dreams of becoming an entrepreneur and opening my own braiding salon. For me, this isn’t just about business—it’s about creating a safe, welcoming space for people to feel beautiful, confident, and cared for. I want to offer more than just hairstyling services; I hope to include financial workshops for clients and employees, blending beauty with empowerment. I believe that confidence and financial freedom go hand in hand.
I also plan to use my platform to advocate for mental health awareness. My own experiences have shown me how critical it is to prioritize emotional well-being. Too often, people silently suffer without support. I want to be part of the change that normalizes asking for help, talking about mental health, and creating spaces where people feel safe to be themselves.
Everything I’ve been through has taught me that struggle doesn’t have to break you—it can build you. I’ve taken pain and turned it into purpose, and I’m committed to using my journey to inspire and support others. I want to help people feel seen, heard, and capable of reaching their full potential—both financially and personally.
This scholarship would be more than just financial assistance; it would be a step toward a future where I can truly make a difference. I’m not just working for a degree—I’m working for a life where I can give back, uplift others, and create lasting impact in my community.
Thank you for considering my story and my goals.
Sarah F. Watson and James E. Dashiell Scholarship
Charity has always held a special place in my heart, as it provides an opportunity to give back and make a meaningful impact on others. Having faced bullying during my college years, I understand the pain of feeling isolated and unsupported. This experience has fueled my desire to help others who may be going through similar struggles. I believe that charity is not just about giving money, but about offering time, compassion, and understanding to those in need.
As a finance student, I plan to give back by using my skills and knowledge to empower others financially. Financial literacy is a powerful tool that can change lives, yet many people lack access to the education and resources they need. In the future, I want to offer financial literacy workshops, especially for underserved communities, to help them make informed decisions about saving, investing, and budgeting. By teaching others how to manage their finances, I can help them build a more secure future for themselves and their families.
Additionally, I plan to support mental health initiatives, as I know firsthand the importance of mental well-being. I want to create spaces where people feel safe to share their experiences and receive the support they need to heal and grow. Through these efforts, I hope to give back by providing both financial guidance and emotional support to those who need it most.
WCEJ Thornton Foundation Low-Income Scholarship
My greatest achievement to date has been my decision to continue my college education despite the bullying I faced during my early years at school. The challenges I encountered in the form of bullying tested my confidence and made each day feel difficult. There were moments when I felt overwhelmed, doubting myself and wondering if I should just give up. However, I chose to persevere. I leaned into my faith, relying on prayer and my belief in a higher purpose. I stayed the course because I realized that my future was worth the struggle, and my dreams were too important to abandon.
This experience taught me a great deal about my own resilience. I discovered that, despite the negative comments and hurtful actions of others, I am capable of much more than I initially believed. I learned to stay strong and push through adversity. I also learned the importance of self-awareness. I realized that acknowledging my feelings, taking time for self-reflection, and seeking help when needed were all crucial parts of my journey toward healing. This process taught me that it’s okay to be vulnerable and that seeking support is not a sign of weakness, but a path toward strength.
Furthermore, this experience deepened my understanding of the importance of mental health. Before facing bullying, I didn’t fully appreciate the toll mental and emotional well-being could take on a person. But as I navigated this difficult period, I began to prioritize self-care and develop strategies to protect my peace. I understood that mental health is just as important as physical health, and I became passionate about mental health awareness. I want to help others who may be struggling in silence, just as I did, by encouraging them to take care of their mental health and seek help when needed.
Looking ahead, my goals are both personal and professional. As a Finance major, I aspire to become a financial advisor, helping individuals and families make informed decisions about their finances. I am passionate about empowering others to take control of their financial futures by teaching them about budgeting, saving, and investing. I believe that financial literacy can break cycles of poverty and insecurity, and I want to be a part of that transformation by helping people achieve financial stability and independence.
Additionally, I have a dream of owning a braiding salon. This goal combines my love for beauty and creativity with my passion for entrepreneurship. I envision a space where clients feel not only confident in their appearance but also supported in their personal growth. In addition to providing high-quality services, I want to integrate financial literacy workshops into the salon’s offerings. I believe that beauty and financial well-being can go hand in hand, and I want to help my clients not only look their best but also manage their finances effectively.
Finally, I want to lead a fulfilling life surrounded by my loved ones. I dream of traveling the world with my family, creating lasting memories and experiencing the beauty of different cultures. Financial freedom is a key part of this vision. I want to enjoy life without the stress of financial uncertainty, and I hope to help others achieve that same freedom. Whether through financial advising or my salon, I want to inspire others to take control of their lives, pursue their passions, and live with purpose.
In conclusion, my greatest achievement has been my perseverance in continuing my education despite bullying. This experience taught me the importance of resilience, self-awareness, and mental health. Looking forward, I hope to become a financial advisor, own a braiding salon, and live a life filled with love, travel, and financial freedom. I am determined to use my experiences to help others and to create a life where I can not only succeed but make a meaningful difference in the world.
