When I arrived in the United States from Morocco a little under a year ago, I found Detroit. And Detroit reminded me of home in a way I did not expect. Not because of its geography or its culture, but because of a feeling I recognized immediately: a city full of people with real ability operating at a distance from the resources and networks that would let that ability go somewhere. I had grown up in that distance. I knew what it cost. And I knew that the most useful thing I could do was not observe it from the outside but walk into it and start building. That is how I became an organizer at the AI Collective Detroit. Over the past few months I have helped plan and run a series of technology and AI events at TechTown Detroit, a hub for innovation in the heart of the city. These events bring together local students, professionals, and builders around hands-on workshops, keynote speakers, and real conversations about where technology is going and how Detroit can be part of it. I handle logistics, outreach, partnerships, and on-the-day operations. I reach out to companies, coordinate with venues, and make sure that students who have never been in a room like this before feel like they belong in it. I also organized and hosted the AI Collective Detroit Hack Day in partnership with Major League Hacking (MLH) and other companies, a full-day hackathon that brought together students and industry professionals from diverse backgrounds to build AI projects from scratch. Watching students who had never built anything in a competitive setting walk away with a finished project and a sense of what they were capable of was one of the most rewarding experiences I have had since arriving here. Beyond organizing, I mentor. At Bitcamp, one of the largest hackathons on the East Coast with over a thousand attendees at the University of Maryland, I spent an entire weekend working directly with student teams, helping them refine their ideas, debug their builds, and push through the moments where they almost gave up. Three of the teams I worked with went on to win their categories. That outcome mattered, but what I remember more is the conversations at two in the morning when someone was convinced they were not good enough to finish and I sat with them until they believed otherwise. Leadership through service matters to me because of what it is not. It is not standing at the front of a room telling people what to do. It is not accumulating a title or a credential. It is showing up consistently for people who need something and making yourself useful without requiring recognition for it. The leaders who changed the direction of my own life did not announce themselves. They just appeared when I needed them and pointed me somewhere I could not yet see. I want to be that for other people. Not because it looks good on a resume but because I know from personal experience that one person showing up at the right moment can change what someone believes is possible for themselves. Detroit has given me the opportunity to do that at scale. I intend to keep doing it for as long as I am here.
