Women in Nursing Scholarship
As I am continuing my education, I will be entering the nursing program at Huntington University. My decision to pursue this degree at this college would not have crossed my mind in the spring of my junior year, but here I am, getting ready to attend Huntington in the fall in hopes of majoring in nursing and minoring in missions. My original plan was to attend a college in South Carolina for an engineering degree that I hoped to use to become successful. It made sense by worldly standards because I was good at math and science, and engineering is a lucrative field. However, I felt my ambition draining and was constantly filled with uncertainty about my career choices and the future.
I went on a mission trip with my youth group right before my senior year, and I spent a lot of time asking God to break my heart for what broke his and just to give me guidance on my future. I got what was not the full answer I was looking for, but an answer all the same. I needed to stop looking for what I could do for myself. There were so many people out there who needed just a little more love and care and here I was thinking about myself. My heart broke for the people whose lives I could never touch and the wounds I could never heal.
A woman who I admire and have grown to love is the head of the nursing department at the college I am planning to attend. Over Christmas, I was talking to her about my plans and my desire to enter the medical field. However, I was feeling a lot of fear about some of the things I might have to do or if I would be any good. She reassured me that there were so many parts to nursing that I would love and how many routes I could take to find the right specialty.
I am entering the field of nursing because it is where I see the most open doors to helping people and meeting mental and spiritual needs by meeting a physical one. I hope to work in either women’s health, cardiology, or pediatrics after I graduate with my nursing degree and earn my certificate in diagnostic medical sonography. My goal is to be a kind and calming presence in what can be a scary place and ultimately to show genuine love and care to all of my patients. I have a strong desire to do mission work and becoming a nurse will give me more opportunities to provide needed care alongside spreading my beliefs. I would like at some point to use my degree and training in a mission-related field, where the focus is not at all profit but entirely people. I am dedicated to pursuing my studies not just for a degree but for the knowledge to help those I come into contact with. Although nursing was not my original plan, I believe that it is the right path for me and is the area that will best allow me to be a light in others' lives.
