Bio

My name is Samantha Warnack and I am a Psychology student at Southern New Hampshire University. I went through a time in my life when I lost my mom just 2 days after my dad's passing and that threw me by a loop and before I knew it my life had switched from being normal, to being on life support from my already failing heart and having broken a heart. By consciously choosing to focus on the good, reframing challenges as opportunities, and practicing gratitude, I can achieve my future goals and create a more positive and fulfilling life. As I continue my studies in Psychology, I will rely on the power of positive thinking to guide me along the way. I believe that by cultivating a resilient and optimistic mindset, I can overcome any obstacle and achieve my full potential. I hope to use my knowledge and experiences to inspire others to embrace the power of positive thinking and create a more positive world for themselves and those around them. Balancing studies and work is a challenge, but with the right mindset, it's a challenge I'm ready to face head-on. I envision a future where mental health care is accessible to all, regardless of any insurance or money. I hope to play a role in creating this future by developing innovative solutions that address the barriers that prevent individuals from accessing the care they need, especially those who face adversity. This empathy, combined with my experiences, fuels my belief that I can contribute meaningfully to the fields of psychology and the people struggling with their mental health.

The desire to contribute to my community was not a sudden spark, but a slow burn ignited by personal tragedy and a deep-seated need to make sense of suffering. As a domestic violence survivor who recently experienced the profound loss of both parents. My dad passed away then my mom just 2 short days later. My life completely did a 180 and I found myself navigating a labyrinth of grief, trauma, and the daunting task of rebuilding my life. It was during this period of intense vulnerability that I recognized a critical gap in community support: the lack of accessible, empathetic mental health resources. This realization, coupled with my own healing journey, propelled me to pursue a Bachelor's degree in Psychology, with the ultimate goal of becoming a mental health counselor . My personal experiences have instilled in me a profound understanding of the importance of emotional validation and support, particularly for individuals navigating trauma, grief, and mental health challenges. Growing up in a smaller town, I witnessed firsthand the stigma surrounding mental health and the limited resources available to those in need. This awareness has fueled my determination to bridge this gap and create a safe, supportive environment for individuals to heal and thrive. I believe that everyone deserves access to quality mental health care, regardless of their socioeconomic status or geographic location. My commitment to making a difference extends beyond academic pursuits. I envision myself as an active participant in community initiatives, volunteering my time and skills to organizations that provide mental health services and support to vulnerable populations. I plan to collaborate with local schools, community centers, and healthcare providers to develop and implement programs that promote mental health awareness, reduce stigma, and provide access to early intervention services. I also intend to advocate for policies that prioritize mental health funding and expand access to care for underserved communities. One specific action I plan to take is to establish a non-profit organization that offers free or low-cost counseling services to individuals and families in my community. This organization will prioritize serving individuals who are uninsured, underinsured, or facing financial hardship. In addition to providing individual and group therapy, the organization will offer educational workshops and support groups on topics such as stress management, coping skills, and healthy relationships. I believe that by providing accessible, affordable mental health care, we can empower individuals to overcome challenges, build resilience, and lead fulfilling lives. I recognize that achieving this vision requires dedication, perseverance, and a collaborative spirit. I am committed to continuing my education, honing my clinical skills, and building strong relationships with community partners. I am also aware of the importance of self-care and maintaining my own mental and emotional well-being, so that I can effectively support others. I find solace and strength in practicing prayer and meditation, which helps me stay grounded and focused on my goals. I am also mindful of the pressures of social media and strive to maintain a healthy balance between online engagement and real-life connections. In conclusion, my journey as a domestic violence survivor and mental health advocate has instilled in me a deep sense of purpose and a unwavering commitment to making a difference in my community. By pursuing a career in mental health counseling, volunteering my time and skills, and advocating for policies that prioritize mental health, I hope to create a more supportive, equitable, and resilient community for all. I am confident that with dedication, perseverance, and a collaborative spirit, we can build a brighter future for generations to come.

Believing in myself means acknowledging my potential to effect change, both in my own life and in the lives of others. It's the quiet confidence that whispers, "You are capable," even when the path ahead seems daunting. For me, this belief is deeply intertwined with my academic pursuits and my aspirations to advocate against mental health challenges and domestic violence. Currently, I am channeling my energy into successfully completing my psychology degree. This goal ignites a fire within me because it represents more than just academic achievement. It's a crucial step towards equipping myself with the knowledge and skills necessary to make a tangible difference in the world. I envision myself as a compassionate and effective advocate, providing support and resources to those who are struggling. This vision fuels my determination and reinforces my belief in my ability to contribute meaningfully to society. It proved to me that with dedication and perseverance, I can exceed my own expectations. This clarity has emboldened me, strengthening my resolve to tackle future challenges with unwavering confidence. It's a reminder that my potential is limitless, and that believing in myself is the first step towards realizing my dreams. I am deeply committed to the mental health struggles we face today and being someone who has overcome obstacles and continues to have a drive for helping my community and those in need of healthy lifestyle changes. My goal is to obtain my Master’s degree in Psychology and become a counselor specializing in grief and loss. I want to work with individuals who feel the world has gone quiet, helping them navigate the "new version" of themselves that emerges after trauma. I am no longer the person I used to be; I am a "new Samantha," one who has learned the importance of self-advocacy and the power of prioritizing mental well-being. My interest in psychology is not just about understanding the human mind; it is about understanding the human heart in its most vulnerable moments. In my own life, I have faced the immense weight of grief, navigating the passing of both my mother and father. These experiences taught me that loss can either silence a person or give them a new voice. I chose to find my voice. As a student at Southern New Hampshire University, I have spent my time diving into the complexities of the human experience—from the Jungian concepts of the "Shadow" to the ways we use art and humanities to process our internal worlds.

On the surface, the journey toward a career in psychology is often seen as a purely academic pursuit. For me, however, this path is deeply personal, forged through the fires of profound loss and a commitment to ensuring that no one else has to walk through the darkness alone. I am a domestic abuse survivor and strong advocate for mental health because I have walked alone in the darkness while grieving the loss of my parents at the same time. The very core of why I have dedicated my life to mental health counseling is to help others that are struggling. My interest in psychology is not just about understanding the human mind; it is about understanding the human heart in its most vulnerable moments. Mattie's Way Memorial Scholarship
On the surface, the journey toward a career in psychology is often seen as a purely academic pursuit. For me, however, this path is deeply personal, forged through the fires of profound loss and a commitment to ensuring that no one else has to walk through the darkness alone. This scholarship, established in memory of Mattie - a young life lost far too soon in 2022- resonates with the very core of why I have dedicated my life to mental health counseling. My interest in psychology is not just about understanding the human mind; it is about understanding the human heart in its most vulnerable moments. In my own life, I have faced the immense weight of grief, navigating the passing of both my mother and father only two days apart. I believe that the role of a mental health professional is to sit in that darkness with the client, helping them integrate their pain rather than being consumed by it. My academic journey has taught me that we cannot simply "fix" grief or depression; we must provide the tools for individuals to navigate it. By understanding the complexities of the human psyche, I intend to create a practice where young people feel safe bringing their darkest thoughts into the light without fear of judgment. I remember my years as a cheerleader, specifically the role of a flyer. To be a flyer, you must have absolute trust in the people holding you up. Mental health advocacy is much the same. When a person feels like they are falling—much like Mattie, the 17-year-old this scholarship honors—they need a community and a counselor who can act as that steady base, catching them before they hit the ground. My perspective as a student and a mother has shifted my focus toward the systemic need for better mental health advocacy in rural communities. We often see resilience as a solitary trait, but true resilience is built through connection. I want to be the advocate who recognizes the subtle shifts in a person’s spirit before they reach a point of no return. By bridging the gap between clinical theory and empathetic, lived experience, I hope to turn my personal history of loss into a lifeline for others. Receiving this scholarship would be more than just financial assistance; it would be a commitment to carry forward the memory of a life lost by dedicating my career to be that advocate in place and help prevent such tragedies. I want to provide the professional support, the empathy, and the clinical expertise necessary to help others find their way back to the light. By studying the depths of our psychology, I hope to honor those we have lost by protecting the futures of those who are still here. ~ Samantha Warnack

I envision a future where mental health care is accessible to all, regardless of their socioeconomic status or geographical location. I hope to play a role in creating this future by developing innovative solutions that address the systemic barriers that prevent individuals from accessing the care they need. I am grateful to the scholarship committee for their consideration and for the opportunity to share my aspirations. Your support will help me to achieve my goals and make a positive impact on the world. To believe in myself means acknowledging the power I hold to shape my future, a future deeply entwined with understanding the human mind and advocating for justice. Growing up in a close-knit, small town, I’ve always been drawn to the stories of others, especially those who face adversity. This empathy, combined with my experiences, fuels my belief that I can contribute meaningfully to the fields of psychology and law. My goal is to bridge the gap between these two disciplines, focusing on forensic psychology and trauma-informed law. I am particularly interested in the psychological underpinnings of crime, unconscious bias, and the mental health challenges within marginalized communities. Having earned my GED, I understand the importance of accessible education and resources. This motivates me to concentrate on making mental health support more available, especially for those who need it most and for the community as a whole-by making it low income or totally free- period! Currently, as I am furthering my education for my B.A degree with Southern New Hampshire University building a strong foundation in psychological theory, with a concentration in mental health counseling. I’m not stopping there, of course, I’m going all the way to get my master’s in this field. Balancing my studies with work and volunteer commitments has taught me resilience and time management. I envision myself working directly with individuals impacted by the justice system, offering therapy, conducting research, and advocating for policy changes that promote fairness and equity. I believe in standing up for what is right, even when it’s difficult. My dream is to foster a more just and compassionate world, one where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. This belief in my potential, my capabilities, and my future, is what drives me every day. In conclusion, I am deeply committed to pursuing a career that combines my passions for psychology, justice, and mental health advocacy. I believe that by leveraging my understanding of the human mind and the legal system, I can make a meaningful difference in the lives of marginalized communities and promote a more just and equitable society. The three steps I have outlined in this essay – enhancing my understanding of the intersection of psychology, law, and social justice, developing a business idea focused on accessible mental health resources, and interviewing a professional in the field and applying their advice – are crucial to achieving my career goals.
