As a wise philosopher, Kal McRaven, once said "How many Einsteins have spent their lives washing dishes? How many Mozarts bent over stoves instead of pianos because they had the misfortune of being born a woman?" It's something that I think about constantly; how women all over the world don't have the same opportunities as I do.
As a first-generation eldest daughter, I am no stranger to the sexism Mexican Machismo mentality the elder members of my family grew up in. I've heard many times by my elders that with my pretty face I could easily "find a husband and settle down". It's actually what motivates me the most to pursue an education, I was given the greatest opportunities my female ancestors could only dream about.
Education is important to me because I refuse to waste the potential I was born with, despite my gender. When my classes get hard and I think about just finding a husband, I think about how my poor widow grandmother doesn't have more than a third grade education because she married young. At my ripe age of seventeen, she already had her second child with my grandfather. My great-grandmother never even learned how to read. Thinking about how I am most likely the most educated woman in my family, It definitely is a very strong motivator for me to pursue higher education.
What's also a strong motivator for me, my other reason for pursuing a college degree is my parents, specifically my dad. At the young age of fifteen, he gave up his whole life and family in Mexico for the chance of a better life. Who am I to waste that huge sacrifice? It would not only be a slap in the face to my father if I did take the opportunity for an education, it would also be a slap in the face to my cousins left behind in Mexico that can't make the journey.
America is the land of the free and where the American dream was born. It's the place my parents work tirelessly so that my sisters and I could have a brighter future. When I think of my future, I imagine myself with a college degree and as the standards my younger sisters and cousins should be encouraged to achieve. I am what feminists for centuries have fought for, an educated woman striving for success despite my biological gender.
