I am a first-generation college student, a single mother of three, and a recovery coach living in a rural Wisconsin community. My journey has not been traditional, but it has given me something far more valuable—perspective, empathy, and the ability to connect with people from all walks of life. I have learned how to meet people where they are, without judgment, and help them see where they could go. That is the foundation of the work I plan to expand through my future.
In my current role as a recovery coach, I work with individuals facing substance use challenges, mental health struggles, and life transitions. I have developed strong skills in communication, boundary-setting, and person-centered support. More importantly, I have learned how to look beyond labels and stigma. Every person has a story, and when people feel seen and understood, they begin to believe in their own ability to change. This is how empathy is built—not just through words, but through consistent, meaningful action.
Growing up without a family background in higher education, I have had to navigate this path largely on my own. Financial limitations, lack of guidance, and balancing responsibilities as a parent have all presented challenges. However, these experiences have strengthened my resilience and deepened my understanding of what many others face, especially in underserved and rural communities like mine. There is a significant gap in accessible wellness, recovery, and culturally inclusive support services in these areas, and I am determined to be part of the solution.
My long-term goal is to open a wellness-based gym and coaching center that combines physical health, recovery support, and personal development. This space will be built on inclusivity and cultural awareness, offering services to individuals from all backgrounds. I want to create an environment where people feel safe, supported, and empowered regardless of their past, identity, or circumstances. This includes offering bilingual support, incorporating diverse wellness practices, and ensuring that individuals who may not have financial means still have access to resources.
To achieve this vision, I am actively pursuing certifications in coaching, recovery support, and health and wellness. These credentials will provide me with the structure, knowledge, and credibility needed to serve others effectively and expand my impact. Education is not just a personal goal for me—it is a tool I intend to use to uplift my community and create opportunities for others.
My ability to connect with people, combined with my lived experience and professional training, allows me to build trust and foster understanding in spaces where it is often lacking. I believe that empathy grows when people feel heard, valued, and supported in their growth. By creating a space that blends fitness, recovery, and personal development, I aim to contribute to a more compassionate and understanding community—starting locally, but with the potential to expand beyond.
This scholarship would not only support my education but also help me take meaningful steps toward building a space that promotes healing, growth, and connection for people of all cultures and backgrounds.
