Growing up, I have always enjoyed the outdoors with my family. Some of my favorite activities are boating, fishing, skiing, dirt biking, and hiking. Sophomore year of high school, I decided to turn my passion into my sport by joining the North Oldham Bass Fishing Team. We didn't have a bass boat, but my dad would drive our little camouflage duck hunting boat while I fished out of it.
I went to every tournament that I could, and it turned into almost every Saturday. From 6:00 in the morning until around 4:30 in the afternoon, we would be out on the water. The weather wasn't always ideal, but we never left early. Many tournaments we came back empty handed, but it was still always an enjoyable day on the water. Later, we decided we wanted to get better at finding the fish and knowing what lures to use, so we went on a guided fishing trip in early March on Lake Cumberland.
We met the guide at 6:00 in the morning, and it was a cloudy day, so it was not yet super bright outside. The day started off with nice cool weather, and after just 30 minutes of fishing, we started getting bite after bite. We caught almost all of our fish before noon because afterwards a front moved through, and the fish stopped biting. At the end of the day, we caught around 18 fish, and that was the most I had ever caught in a single day.
We kept a limit of five fish, and at the end, the weight was around 13-14 pounds. We even caught one nearly five-pound small mouth bass. I had never caught fish so big or in such a large quantity. It was a very enjoyable experience, and I learned so much. Each time my line drew tight, I got so excited to pull in another fish.
Our guide taught us what lures he recommends and what locations are ideal for that time of the year. He even taught us which type of bass to fish for that would more likely reach the size limits needed in bass fishing tournaments. The information that he told us really helped throughout the rest of the season. I started going to the weigh ins with more catches and heavier weight. Without taking this trip, we would have never learned the skills that make the biggest difference in fishing.
