Women in Elementary Education Scholarship
Ever since I was young, I imagined myself as a teacher. I would play “teacher” with my family, specifically with my younger sister and my older brother. Although it was very hard for them to enjoy the game, I had so much fun. I would pretend to be teaching a lesson, which I knew absolutely nothing about, and even create fake tests to give out. One of my biggest goals as a future teacher has been to help low-income students and work in a low-income school. As someone who has experienced being in a low-income school, it can be very easy to be overlooked and treated unfairly. I want to make a change in this stereotype and support students of all backgrounds regardless of their financial circumstances. I believe that every child deserves to get the best education possible from the best teacher possible. As an educator, I want to be able to create a safe space for my students. A part of this would include creating a fun classroom. Students often learn better when they are comfortable and I plan on creating a safe environment with a colorful classroom. Yes, education is very serious, but creating fun activities like hands on learning can be a way to make learning a lot easier. Growing up I learned the value of education. My single mother raised me on her own, with no formal education of her own. From there I learned that knowledge is power and knowledge can get you very far in life. I have seen so many students not able to continue school because of various circumstances and I hope to be able to help any student succeed. I understand that not every student has access to certain resources, so I plan to be able to help each and every one of my students in any way that I possibly can. I plan to create positive relationships with all my students. I want to be able to teach different teaching styles that fit the needs of every student. Growing up, I witnessed different students learn in different ways. Some kids prefer working alone, others need to work in teams, and others simply prefer hands-on learning. Finding a way to teach every one of these methods is one of my man goals once I become an educator. Emotionally, I want to be able to value mental health as it has become an important topic over time. I will value every children’s emotions and in college, hopefully have the privilege of learning how to handle certain behaviors. I want every student to feel comfortable with their feelings and know that it’s okay to not be okay. I will be someone that students can talk to freely without any judgment. My ultimate goal in my journey is to change a child’s life. I want to be able to teach children stuff that they will be able to take on for the rest of their lives. I remember all of my teachers, the good and the bad. I am a firm believer that the good always outweighs the bad. With that, I want to hopefully inspire children to be whatever they want to be, to dream big and to never let anyone diminish their light.
