    I am incredibly fortunate to have been raised by a man who embodies the very definition of selflessness, strength, and grace—my dad. Growing up in a blended family with four siblings, my dad was a constant source of guidance and unwavering support. Despite the challenges that life threw at us, he never faltered. He is, without a doubt, the kind of man who leads with love and patience, never once raising his voice in anger or frustration. He is a monk of a man—a calm, patient figure who always knew how to offer wisdom in the most quiet and meaningful ways. Throughout our childhood, my dad wore many hats. He was a senior project manager, but to us, he was also a teacher, a counselor, and a pillar of strength. He taught me more than just practical lessons related to work and life; he instilled in me the values that I hold dear today. From him, I learned the importance of hard work, integrity, and empathy. He showed me what it means to stay calm under pressure and how to approach life with resilience, even in the toughest of circumstances.     Ethel Hayes Destigmatization of Mental Health Scholarship
    Mental health is one of the most critical aspects of our overall well-being, yet it remains a deeply misunderstood and often stigmatized topic. We live in an age of immense technological and social progress, but mental health issues continue to affect millions of individuals, regardless of their background or circumstances. Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States and, tragically, the second leading cause of death among college-age youth. Much of this suffering can be traced to past trauma, depression, bullying, and a lack of resources and understanding. In my life, mental health has always been an intimate and complicated topic. Nearly 50 years ago, my mother, Vickie, struggled deeply with mental health challenges. A courageous woman who faced the harsh realities of both internal and external struggles, she fought tirelessly, but the weight of her emotional battles took a toll on her. While my mother is alive today, her journey with mental health has been complex and difficult. In the wake of watching her face these challenges, I found myself grappling with a complex set of emotions—grief, confusion, and the painful realization that mental health issues were not openly discussed in my community, particularly within the Black community. My mother’s struggles with mental health were rarely acknowledged, and I, too, found myself pushing my own emotions aside as a coping mechanism. This repression led to personal challenges later in life, as I struggled to understand my own mental health needs. During this time, I also began to realize that I was living with my own mental health disorder—Cyclothymia, a mood disorder that involves periods of hypomania and depression. This diagnosis helped me understand my emotional experiences better, but it also highlighted the need for better communication about mental health within my own life and community. I found that mental health conversations were still cloaked in shame and silence, leaving people to suffer in isolation. One of the most important steps we can take to address mental health issues is to bring these discussions into the light. When mental health struggles are acknowledged, we can begin to challenge the stigma surrounding them. As a person who has lived with a mental health disorder, I understand how critical it is to create safe spaces for people to talk about their struggles without fear of judgment. This is why I am passionate about contributing to the destigmatization of mental health. In my own journey, I’ve also become certified in Mental Health First Aid, a training that has given me tools to support others who may be going through mental health challenges. I’ve learned how to listen, how to be empathetic, and how to help guide individuals to seek the professional help they need. My experience with Mental Health First Aid, along with my personal understanding of mood disorders like Cyclothymia, has deepened my commitment to breaking the silence around mental health issues. How could someone so young, so full of life, and so dedicated to excellence leave this world so soon? It is with great humility and honor that I reflect on how her story has impacted me, especially as someone who is also determined to excel and inspire others. Growing up, I too found joy and strength in sports. For 11 years, I played defense for my recreational soccer team, The Hotshots, developing not only my athletic abilities but also my character. The lessons learned on the field—teamwork, discipline, and resilience—have shaped the person I am today. However, I also faced setbacks. During my soccer career, I suffered a full ACL replacement surgery, along with MCL, meniscus, and femur injuries that forced me to reevaluate my future in the sport I loved. The plot, which contains some of my most beloved characters from The Wizard of Oz, draws me in every time. It beautifully explores the complexities of relationships, particularly the deep bond between Elphaba and Glinda, and challenges the notion of good versus evil. The musical’s powerful messages of acceptance, individuality, and the importance of staying true to yourself resonate with me on a personal level. One of the most special aspects of Wicked for me is how it has become a shared experience with my nieces, ages 11 and 16. We’ve bonded over the story, singing along to the songs and discussing the plot at dinner afterward. My passion for Organizational Leadership reflects my deep commitment to helping others reach their full potential while building environments that encourage growth, collaboration, and innovation. This field aligns perfectly with my values and my personal journey of overcoming challenges, where I discovered how vital effective communication and empathy are in achieving success. I chose Organizational Leadership because I believe that great leaders have the ability to turn challenges into opportunities and inspire others to dream bigger. Through my work as a career counselor at a large community college, I have seen firsthand how guidance and encouragement can transform lives. Helping students and professionals navigate their paths has been incredibly fulfilling, and it has reinforced my desire to develop skills that will allow me to make an even greater impact. As someone who has faced the pressure of proving myself in professional settings, I understand the unique challenges women often encounter. Early in my career, I struggled with imposter syndrome, feeling inadequate because I had not yet completed my degree. Despite these feelings, I persevered, and this experience has fueled my passion to dismantle barriers for others. I aspire to mentor young women, fostering their confidence and resilience so they can pursue their goals with pride and determination. Another area close to my heart is mental health and emotional well-being, particularly among young adults. In my role as a career counselor, I’ve realized how deeply mental health impacts a person’s ability to succeed. My goal is to integrate mental health awareness and support into leadership development programs, creating safe and inclusive spaces where individuals feel empowered to overcome obstacles and thrive. Looking ahead, I hope to create initiatives that combine leadership development, mental health advocacy, and career counseling. By addressing these interconnected areas, I aim to build a foundation for individuals to flourish in all aspects of their lives. My education at Oklahoma State University, where I am pursuing a Bachelor of Professional Studies in Organizational Leadership with a Minor in Management, has provided me with valuable insights into team dynamics, conflict resolution, and organizational success. Additionally, certifications such as Certified Career Services Provider and Mental Health First Aid have equipped me with the tools needed to bring my vision to life. John Young’s legacy as a trailblazer and inspiration resonates deeply with me. Like him, I am driven by a desire to dream big and make meaningful contributions to my field.
