Bio

My name is Sam and I'm 23 years old. I grew up doing gymnastics and had a host of injuries to my neck and my ankles. These injuries are what forced me to retire from the sport at 17 years old. Wanting to stay active I took to lifting weights and for many years I thought I was following "all the rules" from mainstream fitness media. Long story short I ended up getting even more injuries. Frustrated with the state that I was in I set foot on a journey to understand how I could help myself. Eventually I came across two courses that absolutely changed my life. One of them was a biomechanics course called Resistance Training Specialist (RTS) which taught me all the nuances of exercise. The other course was called Muscle Activation Techniques (MAT) which gave me a unique understanding of range of motion, muscle tightness, and muscle weakness. With these courses I was able to help myself and now I'm able to help other people working as a personal trainer. One of my favorite quotes is by Aristotle. It goes like this, "The more you know, the more you realize you don't know." Even though I have learned a lot about exercise and the human body, I understand that there is still a lot of things I don't know. I want to continue my education by pursuing a doctorate in physical therapy so I can continue helping people with chronic aches and pains.

I pulled up to the Starbucks drive through to pay for me coffee. The cashier told me, "Hello, the person before you paid for your coffee. Enjoy!" This act of kindness made me feel so good that I thought to myself, "You know what, I'm going to pay it forward. I'll pay for the person behind me!" Paying it forward is important because performing acts of kindness for people can result in a positive feedback loop where acts of kindness from one person can influence other people to perform acts of kindness for another. On a larger scale this can have a positive impact in society and how people feel / treat each other. I did gymnastics for about ten years and my physical therapy journey starts at the age of sixteen. I was doing a dismount off the parallel bars where I was supposed to do two flips and land of my feet. Things didn't go as planned and I ended up doing one and a half flips and landed straight on my head. I had debilitating neck and shoulder pain that came from this injury and because of this I was forced to retire from the sport. For many years after retiring from the sport I had lost a lot of function on the left side of my neck and in my left shoulder. Eventually I developed numbness down into my hand. What I noticed is that the pain I was dealing with started to negatively affect other areas of my life. I noticed that I couldn't focus as much on my school and work because the pain was distracting me. I started to not socialize as much because the pain was too much of a burden. I was about 19 years old at the time and I knew I had to do something about the state I was in. Afterall I was only 19, I should NOT be so debilitated! I began to seek out help through physical therapists and coaches where I learned a lot about the human body. Eventually I came across this one practitioner who had a unique approach in identifying muscles that needed to be strengthened. He gave me customized exercise solutions to strengthen my specific weaknesses. Slowly but surely, I started to get stronger. The chronic tightness I was dealing with started to diminish, and the numbness in my hand started to go away. What this meant for me is that I was able to focus on school and work more. I started being more social and my relationships started to flourish! I felt like I had my life back! That practitioner I saw absolutely changed my life and he inspired me to purse physical therapy. From personal experience I saw how debilitating chronic pain can be. Not just physically but how it can impact other areas of one's life. I want to pay it forward to other people by helping them overcome aches and pains, so they be the best version of themselves. Once I'm able to help someone help themselves, they can then pay it forward by helping other people in their profession! Five years from now I see myself with a degree in physical therapy. I work alongside other personal trainers, coaches, and doctors where we work collaboratively in helping people move forward physically. I also work as a teacher for a school or another educational program where I can teach other people the skills I've gained. I want to pay forward my education by teaching other physical therapists, coaches, trainers, etc. After all, I'm only one person and because of that I'm limited by how many people I can influence. By teaching others, we can come together to have a much greater impact throughout the world.

    Bold Investing Scholarship
One Investing tip that I've taken to heart is to time the stock market. This goes against conventional wisdom, but I've learned that the stock market will ALWAYS give you another opportunity to buy low. For example, Zillow stock peaked at around $200 / share in February of 2021. About a year later it dropped 67% from it all time high. Its share price dropped to Pre-COVID levels. You can see this trend often in other stocks as well. For example, Tesla stock reached a share price of $900 in February of 2021. It then dipped to $546 in June of 2021 and then rose 100%+ 6 months later. Moral of the story, be patient when entering a position. Often times if you are patient enough you can buy as low as possible. Even if you miss the low the market will almost always give you another opportunity the buy 6-18 months later.

The Impact I want to leave on the world is helping people with chronic pain. Growing up I did gymnastics, and I had a really bad neck injury which resulted in loss of function on the left side of my neck and my left shoulder. Learning to rehab this injury through exercise and lifestyle modifications gave me the passion to help other people overcome their injuries and /or aches and pains so they can continue living a life in which they are physically independent and confident to keep doing the things that they want to keep doing.
    Bold Independence Scholarship
Independence means freedom. This freedom can take form in many different ways. The two forms that means the most to me is physical independence and financial independence. Physical Independence is near and dear to me personally because I had a really bad neck injury when I used to do gymnastics. This injury left my unable to use my left shoulder and the left side of my neck. Through proper rehabilitation and lifestyle modification I've slowly began to regain function and my physical Independence on the left side of my body. Financial Independence is also important to me, not because I want a lavish lifestyle, but it just gives me the security knowing that I don't have to worry about paying for the basic necessities. I am a triplet with two other sisters and throughout the latter half of my childhood my mom couldn't work due to illness. Therefore, my dad had to be the sole provider for me, my siblings and my mom. I saw how hard my dad worked to provide for me and my family. How hard he worked to ensure that we had the basic necessities and even more. This is what it means to be independent, to be able to take care of myself physically and to be able to provide for myself and my loved ones financially
