Janean D. Watkins Overcoming Adversity Scholarship
At the age of 12, I found myself facing an unexpected challenge – a 150-pound Rottweiler, and me in a situation I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy. Leaving me with deep, permanent scars on my leg and foot, and feelings of insecurity and self-doubt, I struggled to understand why I had to look different from everyone else. To cope with the discomfort of standing out, I adopted a strategy of concealment. Year-round, I wore pants to hide the scars, even in the heat of summer. At the beach, I went to great lengths to avoid showing my legs, sporting socks and leaving on all my clothes while my friends played in the sun. It was a constant battle between wanting to fit in and feeling the need to hide my perceived flaws from the world. This newfound sense of self, led me to reflect on how I could use my experiences to inspire others. I realized that my scars could serve as a message of hope and encouragement for those struggling with their own insecurities. I became passionate about promoting self-acceptance and embracing one's uniqueness, recognizing the importance of resilience in overcoming life's challenges. As time passed and I matured, my perspective began to shift. Instead of viewing my scars as sources of shame, I started to see them as symbols of strength and resilience. They became reminders of the adversity I had faced and the courage it took to overcome it. Rather than hiding them away, I began to embrace my scars as a part of who I am, a testament to my journey towards self-acceptance and empowerment. As a high school senior with a 4.0 GPA, I have set my sights on a career in dentistry. My goal is to attend the University of Miami to study dentistry, with the ultimate ambition of opening my own practice. This path allows me to combine my passion for healthcare with my aspiration to make a positive impact on people's lives. I am excited about the opportunity to provide compassionate care to patients while fostering a supportive environment of acceptance and empowerment. My encounter with the Rottweiler has influenced my goals in profound ways. It has taught me the importance of resilience, self-acceptance, and compassion, guiding me towards a career where I can make a difference in the lives of others. With each step forward, I am reminded of the strength it took to face my fears and the courage it will take to pursue my dreams.

Sloane Stephens Doc & Glo Scholarship
I’ve been a chef my whole life, until I was fired and placed on a two month probation period. This time was one of my greatest struggles, because I’ve grown up with food as the soundtrack to my life. I’ve shuffled between the sizzling sounds of garlic and bubbling hum of melting butter. With every flip of a chicken cutlet comes the rustle of breadcrumbs and with every dollop of tomato sauce comes a well known scent. The simple Italian recipe is muscle memory to me at this point. Sizzle, pop, flip, smear, and finally melt. My journey into the world of cooking began with a strong appreciation of our family kitchen. I became enrapt watching the fusion of flavors. My mother's kitchen was my classroom, and I shadowed her every move. Instead of cartoons, I’d watch cooking shows and look up to Gordon Ramsey like others do a sports player. I moved from shadowing to practicing and my family and friends served as willing taste-testers for my culinary creations. I eventually graduated from the four walls of my kitchen to a local Italian restaurant. As a sophmore in high school I worked as a sous-chef, shadowing a new apron. A job I felt I had been preparing for my whole life never felt like a chore, I was eager to step into the role and aspired to take the next step. And then I was taken out of the kitchen, not by choice. A 150 pound rottweiler pulled me from my life path and placed me in the hospital for two months. And while I worked toward rehabilitation, I witnessed the remarkable work of doctors. I found myself watching a new kind of white coat work miracles and listening to a new soundtrack. Three skin grafts, two blood clots, and eleven surgeries later I was cleared to leave the hospital and left with more than I entered with. I was drawn to the field, but wasn’t sure how I’d enter. I’d spent my whole life preparing for something entirely different. But as I rejoined my kitchen, I noticed similarities in the soundtracks and patterns in the motions. The beeps of timers going off and rustles of breadcrumbs brought me back to my hospital bed, but this time I wasn’t confined. I noticed the steady precision of my hands as I worked and realized the path I’d been preparing for wasn’t all that different from the one I wanted to pursue. Just as a chef blends ingredients to create a delectable dish, a doctor combines knowledge, expertise, and compassion to heal and save lives. As soon as I was taken off probation, I was ready to leave my familiar field for something new. While the similarities between my former path and my potential future path are clear to me, I’m well aware of the differences. But my trials in the kitchen and hospital have prepared me for this as well. I’m prepared for any trial or setback.

Being a first-generation student holds immense significance for me, representing not just personal achievement but also a triumph over the barriers that often accompany breaking new ground in one's family. As the first in my family to earn a college degree, I carry the weight of dreams fulfilled and expectations exceeded. It's a testament to resilience, determination, and total support of my family. Growing up, I witnessed the struggles and sacrifices my parents made to provide for our family. Their strong work ethic and ability to persevere through tough times became my inspiration. Despite lacking formal education, they instilled in me the value of hard work and the importance of seizing opportunities. Their belief in me fueled my ambition and propelled me to pursue higher education, knowing it would pave the way for a brighter future. However, my journey to becoming a college graduate was not without challenges. Financial constraints, societal pressures, and self-doubt often loomed large. Yet, with each obstacle, I grew stronger and more determined. I leaned on my support system, sought mentorship, and persevered through the toughest times. Graduating from college wasn't just a personal achievement; it was a victory for my entire family and a symbol of hope for future generations. My start-up landscaping company played a pivotal role in shaping me into the person I am today. It taught me the value of entrepreneurship, leadership, and resourcefulness. Starting from scratch, I learned to identify opportunities, overcome obstacles, and turn setbacks into stepping stones. Building and managing a business required creativity, strategic thinking, and resilience – qualities that are essential not only in entrepreneurship but also in life. Running a landscaping company taught me the importance of hard work, dedication, and attention to detail. From managing finances to leading a team, every aspect of the business demanded discipline and commitment. I learned to adapt to changing circumstances, innovate solutions, and prioritize customer satisfaction. Moreover, the experience instilled in me a sense of responsibility towards my employees, community, and environment. Overall, being a first-generation college graduate and entrepreneur has shaped me into a resilient, driven, and compassionate individual. It has taught me to embrace challenges, seize opportunities, and never underestimate the power of perseverance. As I continue on my journey, I carry with me the lessons learned and the values instilled by both my academic and entrepreneurial pursuits, knowing that they will guide me towards even greater achievements in the future.
