Brian (Animal) Shaw Memorial Scholarship
A leader, the person who leads or commands a group, organization, or country, according to Google. But, being a leader is much more than just being put into a position of power, being a leader is having the ability to collect a groups thoughts for the greater good of the community.
I have shown leadership in many ways, especially in the sport of wrestling. Reading into who Mr Shaw was, he showed his commmunity what it took to be a leader, being there to listen to his athletes and students. At Lindhurst Highschool, in Olivehurst CA, our wrestling team is not in the best position as we used to be. Prior to five years ago we were winning league championships but our program has fallen apart. Yet with our new coach, other athletes and me have pushed through working hard to keep our program alive. We have built a small but close community, who work hard together with integrity to wrestle.
During wrestling, I have learnt that hard work and roughness will help me succeed. So, taking this into my educational life, I have worked hard to be a very highs achieving student. I have a 4.37 GPA and have taken five AP courses. This has not been easy, I have had to manage the workload alongside my sports such as wrestling, cross-country, and track and field. Thanks to God, I am able to say that I have won a national award from Horatio Alger, being a National Scholar(1 of 105 from 25k applicants). So from learning the lesson of grit and hard work from wrestling, I have taken a path to be an engineer. This career path is one of the hardest, having a big work load. Yet, I know as a wrestler I am able to handle anything as long as I put my hard work and effort into it.
My community involvement in my local community has also had a large impact on my life, including my athlethics and academics. I am a part of the Interact Club, a community service club which helps volunteer at many local events and clean ups. I have amounted many hours in the club, participating in volunteering in local elementary festivals and cleanups. I have lived in this community of Olivehurst my whole life, so I have gotten very close to this community, which makes helping out a very pleasant experience, in return for all the opportunities the community has given me. Another involvement is my mentorship program I am involved in at Johnson Park Elementary. In this program, I am able to help non-english speaking kids with their school work and reading. This is a highlight of my week as I can relate to these kids as my first language was Spanish. These kids are very hardworking and their perseverance is something I relate to very heavily, I am glad to be able to help them, as I was once like them.
Winning this scholarship would be a large help to me financially. I live in a low-income household and am not capable of covering the cost for the technology, and other supplies I need for my education. This will help remove a burden from me, and help me succeed even more, hopefully allowing me to enroll into a high ranked university this upcoming year. Thank you.
