WinnerMy name is Sage Harris, and I am a student at Camden High School in Camden, New Jersey. As the third daughter and the middle child of five girls, I grew up in a home filled with responsibility, resilience, and love. My mother, a dedicated surgical technician, worked long hours to provide for us. Watching her balance exhaustion with determination shaped my understanding of hard work from an early age. In our busy household, I quickly learned that everyone had a role to play and mine was to lead when needed.
Because my mother often worked late shifts, I became responsible for helping my younger sisters prepare for school, keeping our home organized, and assisting with meals. At twelve years old, I began cooking regularly. What started as a necessity became a passion. Cooking taught me patience, creativity, and pride in contributing to my family’s well-being. More importantly, it showed me that leadership is often quiet and consistent. Stepping up during those years strengthened my time management skills and my ability to stay focused even when I felt overwhelmed.
Growing up in Camden also presented challenges. I have seen abandoned homes, underfunded schools, and families struggling to stay afloat. It can be discouraging to witness your community portrayed only through its hardships. Yet, I have also seen neighbors support one another, families celebrate milestones, and children dream beyond their circumstances. Living in this environment taught me resilience. I realized that while I cannot control every obstacle around me, I can control how I respond to them.
The COVID-19 pandemic was another defining hardship. When schools closed and daily routines disappeared, I felt uncertain about the future. Isolation forced me to reflect on my goals and the kind of life I wanted to build. Instead of allowing fear to consume me, I used that time to explore new interests and research potential career paths. That is when I discovered a strong interest in real estate and community development. I began to understand how stable housing affects education, employment, and overall well-being. Safe homes create strong communities, and strong communities create opportunity.
This realization changed my perspective. I no longer saw vacant houses as symbols of decline; I saw them as possibilities. I became passionate about learning how business, finance, and property development work together to transform neighborhoods. I want to gain the knowledge necessary to invest in communities like mine and create affordable, sustainable housing options for families who deserve stability.
Education is the foundation of my future. Every class I take is an opportunity to expand my understanding of economics, leadership, and social responsibility. I am committed to challenging myself academically because I know that knowledge is power. I want to graduate from college equipped not only with a degree, but with the skills to make measurable change. My vision is to return to Camden and contribute to its growth restoring homes, creating jobs, and inspiring young people to see potential in their surroundings.
My journey has not been defined by ease, but by perseverance. Balancing family responsibilities, navigating uncertainty during a global pandemic, and growing up in an under-resourced community have shaped me into someone determined to succeed not just for myself, but for others. I believe that true success is measured by impact. Through hard work, education, and service, I plan to build a future that reflects the resilience of the home that raised me and the community that continues to inspire me.
