My name is Sadie Stockwell, and in the fall of 2025, I will be attending the University of South Carolina as a freshman. While I am still deciding, I plan to either go into nursing or begin my pre-med studies with an end goal of becoming an OBGYN or a plastic surgeon. If I went into nursing I would love to be in the ER or join a private practice. I am an extremely hands-on learner and love helping people. These are two skills that will fulfill me throughout my life in health and hospital care. I cannot wait to begin this journey of higher education and reach my highest potential.

Raven Quill Inkwell Scroll
Crow Feather Pen Parchment
Library Notebook Blackbird Manuscript
Bookstore Journal Paper Rook
Categories and Explanations:
Birds:
Raven, Crow, Blackbird, Rook
Reasoning: All four words are specific types of dark-colored birds, each with distinct characteristics and habitats. These birds are often featured in poems and other literature.
Writing Implements:
Quill, Pen, Inkwell, Feather
Reasoning: These words describe tools that are very involved in the act of writing, going from past to present methods. The tools represent the growth of how humans have recorded information and written as a whole.
Written Documents:
Scroll, Parchment, Manuscript, Paper
Reasoning: These terms refer to various forms and materials used to create writings, highlighting the growth of recording information. They also go from past to present, similar to the last category.
Places of Writing/Literature:
Library, Notebook, Journal, Bookstore
Reasoning: These words relate to locations where writings are both stored and possibly created. The word list has both physical spaces dedicated to storing writings as well as places where personal writings may be found.
Each of the categories relates to literature in some way, which is related to my love of reading. Growing up, I read many old poems encompassing old birds as they symbolize darkness and sometimes death. The rest of the categories display writing in a physical form. In Conclusion, creating this puzzle allowed me to be creative and show one of my many passions, reading and english.

Sabrina Carpenter Superfan Scholarship
Sabrina Carpenter beautifully encompasses femininity and is truly what every girl looks up to and hopes to be. Carpenter started her journey to fame through Disney Channel, starring in the hit show “Girl Meets World.” This show, one of my favorites, opened my eyes to who she was. Her character, Maya, was my favorite on the show and she was able to show young women that they could have a bold personality and not fall into the shadows. Having watched “Boy Meets World”, getting to see Maya’s personality reflect that of her dad, Shawn Hunter. Although Girl Meets World was what gave her her start today, she fell out of the public eye until around 2021.
During 2021, the publicity feud involving Carpenter, Olivia Rodgrigo, and Joshua Bassett gave Carpenter her big break, as she was not only put into the limelight again but this time directed towards an older population of listeners. In doing so she was able to write and release more mature songs, shortly after the feud, debuting her new album, Emails I Can’t Send, in 2022. During this time I remember listening to the album and thoroughly enjoying it, Carpenter was able to show a different side of herself that wasn’t marketed for Disney Channel viewers. My favorite part of viewing Carpenter’s journey has been her evolution, not only in her music but in how she presents herself fully. We have truly been able to watch her grow up and into an extremely talented woman and artist.
Sabrina Carpenter recently performed as an opening artist for “The Eras Tour” and this opened many doors and new listeners for her, as each tour date had over 60,000 people attending each show. Even though she was just an opener, she was able to put on an amazing opening act. Through her girly outfits, overall attitude, and perfect selection of songs from her discography, many were entranced by who she was as an artist and wanted to learn more about her. Even with her short stature, she can draw the eye of many, including myself. She truly has the perfect stage presence for her target audience and is going in the perfect direction.
Carpenter is easily able to express her true femininity, through her outfits, stage presence, cheeky comments, and overall lyrics. Carpenter can do something many female singers struggle with throughout the entirety of their careers, she can keep her target audience women. While she is an attractive young woman, and her songs voice many topics surrounding relationships, she maintains her appeal to be for the female gaze. In doing so, she has inspired me as a woman and to be proud of who I am. She truly is a wonderful role model for young girls to look up to due to her point of not doing anything for male approval and validation. Because our world is beginning to be shaped, due to an increase in social media usage, many girls begin dressing and acting differently to be seen by men. This can be extremely harmful, and artists like Carpenter can combat this beautifully and importantly.

“You fix the things you hated, and you’d still feel so insecure.” — “Pretty isn’t pretty”
Throughout the entirety of my life, and many other girls’ lives as well, I have felt less than and continuously compared myself to others. As most of us spend hours scrolling through social media, it is uncommon not to compare ourselves to the pretty girls on our feed. Although body and face editing is widely prevalent, it doesn’t stop women from viewing these highly edited photos and asking themselves “Why don’t I look like that?” Social media is harming the way, especially young girls, look at themselves in the mirror. Rather than being uplifting, social media is causing insecure thoughts to occur at extremely young ages. Olivia Rodrigo’s lyric: “You fix the things you hated, and you’d still feel so insecure.” from her song “Pretty isn’t pretty” can capture the feelings that many young women, including myself, experience due to the rise of social media.
I have had the app “TikTok” since the ripe age of 12, the app has always caused me to compare myself to others and has dictated how I hold myself. For example, the outfits I would wear, the hairstyles I would do, and even how I would speak. Due to the rising popularity of TikTok, this is when my insecurities began. I would see girls on my for you page who were prettier, had nicer clothes or hair, and were more filled out. Watching these women every day caused me to think less of myself, as I was in a constant state of comparison. Although I had these feelings, I never changed myself until my junior year of high school.
Junior year I had fallen down the rabbit hole of wanting boys’ attention. While still comparing myself to other women, I began to think “Maybe [insert boy's name] would like me better if I looked like her?” Because of these new thoughts, I began taking extra steps to fix the many insecurities I had. I dyed my hair, pierced my nose, and started talking differently. I fully believed that these things would make me admirable to men. I was only seeking validation from boys and didn't feel pretty unless told so by a boy.
As I am a senior in high school now, I have slowly realized the need to be validated by men. I am slowly becoming confident in my own body, and being proud of who I am without needing to change anything. Learning these lessons was hard and took a lot of mistakes and time to learn. Although I believe that every woman should feel confident in her own body, doing so is hard. Olivia Rodrigo singing about these things allows me and other women to feel more heard, as the struggles of insecurity are normal and not something anyone has to go through alone. Being insecure is a common part of being a teenage girl, however, we can work to build up our confidence one step at a time.
Angelia Zeigler Gibbs Book Scholarship
I have always seen Nursing as an important career. It wasn't until one such personal experience when I was 14 that I was made aware of the influence nurses have had on me. When I was in the hospital with pneumonia, I felt weak and lonely. Then a nurse sat with me, not to give me medication or perform a procedure, but just to talk. That simple act of human touch changed my previous mindset about the hospital. She made me feel heard, seen, and not just "another patient."
My interaction with her caused me to start researching more on the career path of nursing. I found that nurses are not just medical staff; they are caring, dedicated, and there to provide comfort. They can make patients feel included and respected, by showing their patients that they care about them on a deeper level.
I would like to be that kind of nurse. The idea of being the one who causes someone to leave a hospital feeling complete and cared for, rather than dismissed or overlooked, is enough for me. Being able to make people smile, and provide genuine help makes me excited for the future. I would like to be part of a healthcare culture where human interaction and empathy are as important to healing as medical information. Ultimately, I would like to be a nurse who makes a tangible, positive difference in people's lives, the way my nurse did for me.
