Dr. Michael Paglia Scholarship
"Hi mom, we just wanted to let you know twin B, has a condition called fibular hemmelia, where he is missing his weight bearing bone." These were the words I heard the Doctor say when I found out one of my twins was going to be faced with challenges at my 20 week anatomy scan, I had no idea that this was just the beginning of the difficult road we had ahead of us. I choose to make the ultimate decision to keep my twins. At the tender age of 1, my son christian had to get amputated on bilaterally. This was a huge decision to make, but a much needed one. Through every step of the way there was a nurse in my families corner advocating for my child, throughout different stages of his life. I was 20 years old, a young black mom, in school, working 2 jobs full time to have money to support my needs.
I was told that we were being referred to NYP Morgan Stanley because they had such an extensive NICU, it was the light in the tunnel that I needed. As I embarked on this journey to go to this new hospital, I was greeted by a staff that I could never forget. They left a footprint in my heart forever. The team of nurses that cared for me during my prenatal visits, was remarkable! This was also just the beginning. When the twins were born at 33 weeks, and was left in the NICU for 3 weeks, I was at ease to know that the staff that would care for my child went above and beyond for both of them. Seeing how much they cared for those who were in need, as well as myself (the family of the patient) made me want to repay them in ways that words wouldn't allow.
I knew from that day forward, I wanted to be on the same side as those nurses who provided the same amazing care for others. I wanted to provide support for people when they are need.
Another reason why I want to go into nursing is because I am currently a 911 operator who is looking to serve the community from the other side of the phone. I have been in public service for 4 years here at 911, but it is tiresome not being able to follow through with my calls. We are often left in the dark.
I would like to use my degree in nursing to serve in a underserved hospital, to provide above average and much needed care to children. I am going to leave my footprint in this word, and I am hoping that this scholarship will help me follow suit.
Thank you !
