In the world there is black and white, with gray being the middle ground. In most of our lives we are given compromise, a gray zone. A chance to mess up and try again. But for the rest, we grow up with the mindset of black and white. That there is no middle ground. It's either you get it or you don't. You fail or you win. Leaving no room for mistakes. Coming from a strict Christian Jamaican household, that came straight from the island, I was not given much wiggle room to make mistakes or stray from the dream my father had for me. It's always going to school, coming home, and studying. Go to sleep, then repeat. Nothing else matters. If I failed at that or tried to compromise, it's an automatic “NO”. It's black or white. For some people it might not seem like anything is wrong with that. But what about my youth? What about experiencing, school dances, and sports. What about being a child? Everyone says, including my father, that being a youth is the best time of anyone's life, and I somewhat agree with that, but I believe, as a young adult soon to be 18, there has to be a gray area, an area where the growing mind has room to figure out themselves. Not just to be book smart but “street smart” as well.

Growing up money was not always the best to me everywhere I go I would have to hear. No we can’t afford this. So from young age, I understood that money isn’t always something you can rely on because I’ve watched my parent go from having all the money in the world to not having an income in school. We weren’t really taught much about finances. from listening to those around me, I realize how important it is to be careful with what i spend money on because it’s not going to be there for me always. But I do know from my role models that in order to make it somewhere you have to save as much as you can for a rainy day. Whatever I learn, I plan to make full use of it. I plan to save my money. Any chance I get not make any bad decisions when handling my money and not being scared to ask questions or look something up when I don’t understand it in the future I want to be stable and not have to rely on anyone to borrow anything from them. I’ve heard many people talk about how once they took loans out for college. They’re still paying them back 50 years later I would not want to see myself in that situation. I would want my money to be mine and used responsibly. Because of that, I plan to pay more attention and teach myself all the small little things that I can and to be more consistent with how I keep my money to always be ready when I can. I also want to start planning out how my money is being spent. Because I know that there are lots of things in this upcoming generation that are going to require attention and some finance into. I would like to find a way to manage that so that I am not struggling at the end of the day when I hear about finances in future goals, I think of gaining control, not just over the money, but over freedom of it and being able to maintain it it is going to be difficult because I really don’t have anybody that responsible around me to help me handle it the way I want to and I know I’m going to make mistakes along the way, but at the end of the day that is my intention.
