Bio

My name is Sabriyah, I am a first-year student at Bowie State University pursuing my Bachelor of Science in Nursing. I am also a Certified Nursing Assistant with a passion for healthcare and a commitment to improving the lives of others. Attending college has always been a dream of mine, but my journey was delayed by life’s challenges. 3 months before my high school graduation, my father passed away tragically in a motorcycle accident, leaving me to navigate adulthood while grieving the loss of my biggest supporter. Despite this, I persevered, channeling my grief into purpose and building a foundation in healthcare. As a CNA, I witnessed the profound impact that skilled & empathetic care can have on patients and families. These moments fuel my ambition to become a registered nurse, empowering me to expand my capacity to serve others. As a student at Bowie State, I am committed to academic excellence and personal growth. My goals extend beyond the classroom; I aim to use my degree to advocate for equitable healthcare access and to mentor others who aspire to enter the medical field. I believe that my resilience, determination, and passion make me a strong candidate for this scholarship. With your support, I can continue my education, contribute to the nursing profession, and honor my father’s legacy by making a meaningful difference in the lives of others. If you're reading this, thank you for considering me. I am excited about the opportunity to share my story and demonstrate how your investment in my education will yield lasting benefits for the community I serve.

    Mental Health Scholarship for Women
My mental health plays a significant role in shaping both my academic performance and personal life as I navigate the demands of attending school. Like many students, I’ve experienced moments of stress and overwhelm, particularly as I balance the responsibilities of being a first-year student, a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), and pursuing my Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). However, I’ve learned that prioritizing my mental health is essential not only for academic success but also for maintaining meaningful connections with others and staying focused on my long-term goals. Academically, mental health challenges can sometimes make it difficult to concentrate or manage my workload effectively. The pressure of deadlines, exams, and the high expectations I set for myself occasionally feel overwhelming. However, I’ve developed strategies to manage these challenges and maintain my performance. For instance, I practice mindfulness techniques like deep breathing and grounding exercises before studying or exams to reduce anxiety and improve focus. Additionally, I break down large assignments into smaller, manageable tasks, which helps me stay organized and prevents me from feeling paralyzed by the scope of my responsibilities. In my personal life, mental health impacts how I connect with friends and family. When I’m feeling stressed or emotionally drained, I’ve learned to communicate openly with those close to me, ensuring they understand my need for support or space. By maintaining this transparency, I’ve been able to strengthen my relationships and create a supportive network of people who genuinely care about my well-being. To prioritize my mental health, I take proactive steps to create balance in my life. One of my most important habits is setting aside time for self-care, whether it’s journaling, exercising, or simply enjoying a quiet moment with a cup of tea. These small acts of self-kindness help me recharge and face challenges with a clear mind. I also make a conscious effort to maintain a healthy lifestyle by eating nutritious meals and getting adequate sleep, both of which have a profound impact on my emotional well-being. Another critical aspect of maintaining my mental health is seeking help when needed. I am not afraid to reach out to my professors or academic advisors when I’m struggling, and I take advantage of campus resources like counseling services. Recognizing when I need assistance has been a crucial step in my journey toward managing my mental health effectively. Additionally, my role as a CNA has provided me with valuable perspective and coping skills. Witnessing the resilience of patients in challenging circumstances has inspired me to cultivate my own strength and seek solutions when faced with difficulties. My work has also taught me the importance of compassion—not just for others, but for myself. I remind myself that it’s okay to take breaks, to set boundaries, and to prioritize mental well-being over perfection. Ultimately, I’ve come to view my mental health as a cornerstone of my success, both in school and in life. By making it a priority, I’ve not only improved my ability to perform academically but also strengthened my relationships and sense of purpose. While challenges will undoubtedly arise, I am confident in my ability to face them with resilience, self-awareness, and the support of the community I’ve built around me.

As a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), I have always recognized the connection between mental and physical health. Many patients I care for experience emotional challenges alongside their physical ailments. I make it a priority to provide not just medical assistance but also emotional support by listening to their concerns, offering encouragement, and creating a comforting environment. Small actions, like spending extra time with someone who feels isolated or reassuring a nervous patient, can make a significant impact on their mental well-being. Beyond my role as a CNA, I’ve supported friends, family, and colleagues by being a trusted confidant. Whether it’s checking in during difficult times, encouraging them to seek professional help when needed, or simply offering a non-judgmental space to talk, I’ve seen how meaningful emotional support can be in fostering resilience and recovery. My experiences have inspired me to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) at Bowie State University, where I am committed to deepening my understanding of mental health’s role in overall patient care. My studies will provide me with the knowledge to recognize early signs of emotional distress and the skills to address these concerns effectively. I aim to specialize in holistic care, integrating mental health support into my practice. In my future career, I hope to work in underserved communities, where access to mental health resources is often limited. As a nurse, I plan to advocate for equitable healthcare by educating patients about the importance of mental well-being and connecting them to available resources. I also want to create a safe space within healthcare settings where patients feel seen, heard, and valued. Additionally, I plan to mentor aspiring healthcare professionals, emphasizing the importance of emotional intelligence in patient care. By fostering empathy and compassion among future nurses, I hope to create a ripple effect that extends beyond my direct interactions. Helping others with their mental health has been one of the most fulfilling parts of my journey, and I am determined to continue this mission. Through my education and future career, I aspire to provide comprehensive care that not only heals the body but also uplifts the mind and spirit.
