My name is Saanai Kennedi Devoe, and I am a graduating senior at Nova High School in Broward County. I was raised in a single-parent household by my mother, whose strength and sacrifice have shaped the person I am today. I learned the meaning of resilience early on. My mother has always been my greatest supporter, working tirelessly to provide and ensure I had what I needed to succeed. Yet, even with her strength and dedication, there were times when the weight of life felt crushing. Balancing school, sports, household responsibilities, and the emotional absence of resources that many of my peers took for granted forced me to mature quickly. While I never lacked love, I often found myself carrying burdens too heavy for someone my age.
As I navigated adolescence, anxiety and stress became familiar companions. I was determined to excel academically. Often stretched thin, being pulled between late-night study sessions, cheerleading practice, track meets, flag football games, and taking care of things at home. These extracurriculars were more than just hobbies—they became my refuge. Being part of a team gave me purpose, structure, and an outlet to release the emotions I didn’t know how to express. Sports helped me find my voice, my strength, and my sense of belonging.
Through these experiences, I came to a realization that has deeply influenced my path: mental health is not a luxury-it is a necessity. In underserved communities like mine, it is often overlooked, stigmatized, or treated as an afterthought. But I have seen how unspoken struggles can take a toll on academic performance, friendships, family dynamics, and self-worth. Acknowledging and addressing my own mental health needs has made me more self-aware, compassionate, and committed to creating spaces where others feel safe to share their truth.
This understanding has shaped the way I show up in the world. In sports, I wasn’t just a teammate—I was often the one who noticed when someone was off and made time to check in. In school, I became a trusted friend, someone who people could confide in without fear of judgment. I’ve learned that genuine connection starts with listening, with showing up consistently, and with reminding people that they are not alone. These lessons have inspired me to be a person who leads with empathy in every setting.
Most importantly, these values have guided me toward my future career goals. I plan to study kinesiology because I want to be in a field where I can help people heal—physically, mentally, and emotionally. Whether I become a physical therapist, athletic trainer, or work in sports medicine, I want to treat the whole person, not just the injury. I want to be someone who understands the pressure athletes face, who recognizes the emotional toll of physical setbacks, and who provides not just care but compassion. My dream is to serve communities like the one I came from—where access to health care is limited and mental health support is often inaccessible.
I am applying for this scholarship not only because of financial need but because I deeply align with the mission of the Udonis Haslem Foundation. Like Udonis, I come from a background that required perseverance, grit, and strong family values. I believe in giving back, in lifting others as I climb, and in being a source of hope for those who are often overlooked. This scholarship would relieve a significant burden for my family and allow me to focus fully on college and beyond. I want to show others that your circumstances don’t define you—and that prioritizing your well-being can be the key to rising above.
