Janean D. Watkins Aspiring Healthcare Professionals Scholarship
As an aspiring healthcare professional and rising college freshman, I am preparing to take the first step on my journey of higher education toward becoming a physician-scientist, holding both MD and PhD degrees. My love for science started at a young age and my interest in a career in healthcare developed more recently. Achieving my goal of becoming a physician-scientist will allow me to build an impressive body of work that incorporates my passions for both science and being a healthcare provider. My fascination with chemistry ignited in middle school when I learned that the wonders of nature could be explained by atoms and molecules. This revelation was a key that unlocked a hidden world, revealing the intricate beauty and breathtaking complexity of life at a fundamental level. My intellectual curiosity was kindled when I witnessed a friend’s struggle with sickle cell disease and became aware of the unequal burden this disease places on communities of color. This made me want to contribute to finding solutions that promote equity in healthcare. I recognized that chemistry’s intersection with biology could be a tool to contribute to the betterment of human life. With this combination of intellectual fascination and personal purpose, I embarked on the path of studying chemistry. AP Chemistry class was my intellectual playground, a place to delve into chemical equations and lab experiments. Then, I completed a Hazmat class, which built on my chemistry knowledge. The two subjects intertwined in my mind, as I saw their real-world applications converge. This synergy solidified my excitement about pursuing chemistry. During a summer biotechnology program, I attended lectures at Gladstone Institutes. The lectures filled me with awe and inspiration. Scientists discussed their cutting-edge research and described the unraveling of disease mechanisms. The passion, dedication, and hope they had for the impact of their research resonated with me. The lab, with its endless potential for discovery and its tangible impact, is where I envision myself contributing to the advancement of knowledge and improving lives through the power of science. Last year, I became a volunteer member of a local fire department, allowing me to enroll in an emergency medical technician (EMT) course. Upon completion of the course this June, I will become a state and nationally certified EMT. I am currently in the internship portion of the course that requires students to respond to ten emergency calls in which we provide care to patients under the supervision of an EMT and complete the proper patient report documentation. I am grateful for the opportunity to learn about emergency medicine, work with diverse populations, and serve my community. While I hope to change the world with groundbreaking scientific research, I realize I will always appreciate the chance to change or even save an individual life. This knowledge necessitates the incorporation of patient care into my future. One of my greatest achievements was earning the Girl Scout Silver Award. I earned the award while exploring my interest in public health by designing, sewing, and donating 50 facemasks to a local homeless shelter for families, and creating a website with information on how to stay safe during the pandemic. When developing my project, it was important to me to respond to a community need by helping people with elevated risk for severe COVID-19 outcomes. I aimed to combat socio-economic disparities in healthcare through prevention efforts because the health of the entire community is important to improving public health. As I prepare to bridge clinical practice and scientific research, I will continue to participate in and advance preventative steps and advocacy steps to combat socio-economic disparities in healthcare.
