Growing up in a single-parent household shaped much of who I am today. My mother, a first generation immigrant, worked hard to give me opportunities she never had. Watching her break language barriers, financial hardships, and cultural challenges gave me a strong sense of discipline, empathy, and purpose.
My passion for nursing was influenced by my grandmother, who faced a lot of health conditions throughout her life. From a young age, I accompanied her to her dialysis appointments and witnessed firsthand the critical role that compassionate healthcare plays in a patient's quality of life. As a child, I didn't understand the true depth of her health conditions, but I remember how strong she remained through all her surgeries and treatments. Her health decline was slow, and being close to it was painful. I lost her this May, right after I got accepted into my nursing program. I planned to tell her about the news when I visited her, but unfortunately never got the chance. Her life and passing taught me that nursing is more than a profession, it's a way to be present for people in their most vulnerable moments. I want to be the kind of nurse I would trust to care for my grandma.
Balancing school and work while supporting my family hasn't been easy. I've overcome financial challenges, long hours working, and moments of doubt. I work overnight shifts as a night auditor in a hotel so that I can support myself financially while also being able to study. I've maintained a 3.9 GPA and stayed committed to my goals. I am proud of how far I've come, but I know the road ahead still requires dedication and support.
Receiving this scholarship would help ease the financial burden of my education, allowing me to focus fully on my training and clinical experience. More importantly, it would bring me one step closer to giving back to the communities that have helped me and my family. I hope to work in underserved areas, providing care to patients who, like my family, may face linguistic or cultural barriers to healthcare. Becoming a nurse is not just a career goal for me, but a way to honor my family's sacrifices, support others through their most vulnerable moments, and represent the next generation of bilingual, multicultural healthcare professionals. I am committed to making a meaningful difference, and this scholarship would be a vital part of that journey.
