After spending a year in college, I’ve realized my true passion is in barbering and building something that serves my community in a more direct way. I now plan to attend barbering school with the long-term goal of opening my own barbershop.
My dream is to own a barbershop that not only provides quality services, but also gives back by offering low-cost or free haircuts to children with special needs and those on the autism spectrum, creating a comfortable and welcoming environment for every client. I already run a 501(c)(3) organization focused on helping children from low-income backgrounds access opportunities in sports through a day-camp setting. Through that experience, I’ve seen how powerful it is to create spaces where kids who are often overlooked can feel included, supported, and valued.
Attending barbering school is the necessary next step in achieving this vision, but without financial assistance, it would not be possible for me to pursue this path. I am committed to using my education not just for a career, but to build a business that directly impacts and uplifts my community.

Love Island Fan Scholarship
The Fade for Love Challenge
One of the biggest ways people express themselves is through their appearance, and a great haircut can completely transform someone’s confidence. The “Fade for Love” challenge tests Islanders’ creativity, communication skills, and ability to work under pressure while incorporating the art of barbering. For this challenge, the boys and girls are paired up. One Islander from each couple takes on the role of the barber, while the other becomes the client. The catch is that the “barber” cannot actually cut hair. Instead, they must create a haircut design using washable hair chalk, temporary color spray, styling products, and barbering tools while following a secret style card chosen by production.
Each style card contains a unique haircut theme inspired by different personalities, such as “The Heartbreaker Fade,” “The Loyal Partner,” “The Bad Texter,” or “The Ultimate Green Flag.” The client cannot see the card and must rely entirely on their partner’s instructions and vision. Throughout the challenge, couples have only fifteen minutes to complete their look. During that time, they must answer relationship-themed questions. Every time they disagree on an answer, they lose one minute from their styling time. This forces couples to balance communication, trust, and teamwork while racing against the clock.
Once time expires, all of the Islanders participate in a runway-style reveal where they showcase their creations. A panel consisting of the Islanders not competing that round, along with a guest professional barber, scores each team on creativity, teamwork, confidence, and how well the final look matches the secret theme. The winning couple receives an exclusive villa date and earns the power to send one other couple on a compatibility challenge. The losing couple must complete a humorous barber-themed punishment, such as performing dramatic “hair transformation” commercials for the rest of the villa.
The Fade for Love challenge combines creativity, competition, and romance while highlighting the confidence-building power of barbering. It creates entertaining moments for viewers while giving Islanders an opportunity to show how well they communicate, collaborate, and support one another under pressure.
Ethel Hayes Destigmatization of Mental Health Scholarship
My journey with mental health has shaped not only who I am, but also the direction I want my life to take. After spending time in college, I realized that the traditional academic path was not the healthiest or most sustainable environment for me. I made the difficult decision not to return, not out of giving up, but out of understanding myself better and recognizing what I need in order to thrive.
I have been diagnosed with moderate depression and moderate anxiety, and I also live with ADHD, which affects my focus, energy, and consistency in structured academic settings. For a long time, I tried to push through these challenges without really acknowledging how deeply they were impacting my day-to-day life. Over time, I learned that success does not always look like forcing yourself into environments that drain you. Sometimes it means redirecting your energy into something more aligned with who you are and how you function.
That realization is what led me to barbering.
Barbering feels different from anything I have pursued before. It is hands-on, creative, and personal. It allows for structure, but also flexibility and human connection. It gives me the opportunity to build confidence in others in a very real and visible way. I have always believed in the idea that when you look good, you feel good. That simple philosophy has stayed with me because I have experienced how much a small change in appearance can impact someone’s confidence and mindset.
That is exactly what I want to give to others.
My long-term goal is to open my own suite-style barbershop that not only provides high-quality barbering services, but also intentionally serves children with special needs and children on the autism spectrum. I understand that for many of these children, something as routine as a haircut can be overwhelming. It can involve sensory challenges, anxiety, and difficulty sitting through the process. I want my space to be different—calm, patient, understanding, and adapted to the needs of each individual child. I want families to feel like they have a place where they will not be judged or rushed, but supported.
My desire to build this kind of environment also comes from my experience working with youth. I have spent time as a summer day camp counselor and have coached multiple youth athletic programs. Through these roles, I have learned how important patience, communication, and emotional awareness are when working with children, especially those who need extra support. I have also seen how often those children are misunderstood or placed in environments that are not designed for their comfort or success.
Outside of my professional goals, mental health has also impacted me on a deeply personal level. During my high school years, I lost three friends to suicide, each connected to their own struggles with mental health. Those experiences changed how I see the importance of support, understanding, and simply being present for people. They also reinforced the idea that you never really know what someone is carrying with them, even if they seem fine on the surface.
These experiences are part of why I want my future work to be meaningful. I do not want to just have a job—I want to create something that makes people feel seen and valued in a very real way.
This scholarship would directly support my ability to attend barbering school and complete the training I need to begin this career. Without financial assistance, continuing my education in this field would be extremely difficult. Barbering school is the necessary next step toward building the life and business I am working toward.
Ultimately, my goal is simple: to take what I have learned through my own challenges and use it to create a space where others feel more confident, more comfortable, and more understood. Even if that impact starts with something as small as one haircut that helps someone feel better about themselves, I believe that still matters.
Joe Gilroy "Plan Your Work, Work Your Plan" Scholarship
After spending a year in college, I realized that my path is not in a traditional four-year degree, but in a hands-on career where I can build something of my own and directly serve my community. That realization led me to barbering. I am now committed to attending barbering school, a six-and-a-half-month program that costs approximately $18,000. It is a serious financial commitment, but it is also the exact training I need to turn my goals into reality.
During the program, I plan to continue working my full-time job while attending school five days a week. It will require discipline and long days, but I am prepared for that balance because I know what is on the other side of it. I plan to save as much as I can throughout school so that once I graduate, I am in a position to take the next step quickly and responsibly.
My long-term goal is to open my own suite-style barbershop. I do not just want a place that provides haircuts, but a space that is intentional about who it serves. Specifically, I want to specialize in providing low-cost or free haircuts for children with special needs and children on the autism spectrum. I understand that for many of these children, getting a haircut is not simple. It can be overwhelming, overstimulating, and stressful, not only for them but for their families as well.
Through my experience coaching youth athletics and working as a summer day camp counselor for the past two summers, I have seen firsthand how important patience, structure, and understanding are when working with children from all backgrounds. I have also seen how often kids with additional needs are overlooked or placed in situations that are not designed for them to succeed comfortably. That is something I want to change in my own way. Alongside my community work, I already run a 501(c)(3) organization that helps children from low-income backgrounds access opportunities in sports through a structured day camp environment. That experience has shown me how much impact can come from simply creating access where there normally is none.
Attending barbering school is the next necessary step in my journey, but without financial assistance, it would not be possible for me to pursue this career path. I am not looking for an easy route, I am looking for the opportunity to build something sustainable and meaningful. My goal is not just to become a barber, but to create a space where children feel safe, respected, and cared for. Even if my impact starts with something as small as one haircut that makes a child’s day easier, I believe that still matters. And over time, I hope those small moments grow into something much bigger.
