      Willie Louis Pegues Science Scholarship
As a sophomore at UC San Diego pursuing an Applied Mathematics and Computer Science degree, my journey into the sciences has been shaped by a deep curiosity and a passion for problem-solving. Growing up, I was fascinated by how things work, whether it was a household appliance or the complex systems governing our universe. This curiosity led me to explore the sciences early on, but it was in high school that I realized the impact that mathematics and computer science could have on the world. I became captivated by how these fields intersect to solve real-world problems, which ignited my desire to delve deeper into the sciences. My interest in mathematics and computer science comes from their potential to create solutions for pressing issues. I remember my first coding experience in a high school computer science class, where I learned to build simple algorithms. The idea that lines of code could lead to meaningful actions fascinated me. It wasn’t just about writing code; it was about creating something from nothing—an elegant solution to a complex problem. This opened my eyes to the power of computer science as a tool for innovation and impact, particularly in areas like data privacy, cybersecurity, and algorithmic bias. Since then, my passion for these fields has only grown, and I am committed to using my skills to contribute positively to society. My career goal is to work at the intersection of technology and social impact. I am particularly interested in developing solutions that address data privacy, cybersecurity, and the ethical implications of artificial intelligence. I believe technology should empower rather than perpetuate inequalities. As a Black student in STEM, I am aware of the biases within the tech industry and broader society. This drives my ambition to work on projects that promote fairness and inclusivity. By leveraging my knowledge in applied mathematics and computer science, I aim to help create technologies that are innovative and equitable, ensuring they benefit all communities, especially those historically marginalized. Receiving this scholarship would significantly impact my educational journey toward becoming a scientist. Financial support would alleviate the burden of student debt, allowing me to focus more on my studies and research. More importantly, it would enable me to engage in extracurricular activities and internships aligned with my career goals without the constant worry of financial constraints. I am eager to participate in research that explores the ethical implications of artificial intelligence and develop algorithms that are unbiased and fair. This scholarship would provide me with the resources to fully pursue these opportunities, whether through attending conferences, accessing research materials, or collaborating with experts in the field. Beyond financial relief, this scholarship would validate my efforts and aspirations. It would recognize my commitment to excellence, resilience in overcoming barriers, and dedication to using science and technology for social good. This acknowledgment would fuel my determination to push forward, knowing that others believe in my potential to make a difference. I am committed to being an active contributor in my field, challenging the status quo, and working towards creating a more inclusive scientific community. In conclusion, my passion for the sciences is driven by a desire to solve complex problems and make a meaningful impact. My career goals focus on leveraging technology for social good by addressing issues like data privacy, cybersecurity, and algorithmic fairness. Receiving this scholarship would greatly influence my educational journey, providing the financial support and encouragement needed to pursue my dreams of becoming a scientist dedicated to creating a better and more equitable world.

As a Black student pursuing an Applied Mathematics and Computer Science degree at UC San Diego, I strive to embody traits that define a strong leader: leadership, communication skills, resilience, unselfishness, focus, determination, and a strong work ethic. Each day, I work to develop these qualities to advance my education and contribute positively to my community. Leadership and communication are fundamental to my daily interactions. I actively engage with peers and professors, whether in class discussions, group projects, or extracurricular activities. I foster an inclusive environment where everyone feels heard and valued. Effective communication involves both speaking and listening, and I aim to do both well. My ability to articulate ideas and motivate others has led me to leadership roles in study groups and student organizations focused on technology and social justice. In these roles, I emphasize collaboration and inclusivity, ensuring everyone’s voice is considered. This approach has strengthened my leadership skills and helped me build meaningful relationships. Resilience is another trait that I display daily. As a Black student in STEM, I am aware of the challenges and biases that exist, but I approach these with a growth mindset. When faced with difficult coursework or moments of doubt, I focus on perseverance. If I encounter a complex problem in my computer science classes, I seek help from professors, attend office hours, or collaborate with classmates. My resilience is evident in my commitment to not give up, even when the path is difficult. This mindset helps me succeed academically and prepares me for life’s unpredictability. Unselfishness is central to my interactions with others. I believe true leadership involves serving and uplifting those around you. In my routine, I practice this by volunteering as a tutor for underrepresented students who struggle with math and computer science concepts. I understand the systemic barriers that many students of color face and am dedicated to helping others overcome them. By sharing my knowledge and time, I aim to create a more equitable learning environment where everyone has an opportunity to succeed. Focus and determination are essential for anyone pursuing a degree in a demanding field like Applied Mathematics and Computer Science. I demonstrate these traits through disciplined study habits and effective time management. I set specific, measurable goals for my academic performance and continuously evaluate my progress. My determination drives me to push beyond my comfort zone, whether tackling a challenging coding project or conducting independent research. This relentless pursuit of knowledge keeps me motivated and on track. A strong work ethic is perhaps the most defining trait of my routine. Balancing a rigorous academic schedule with extracurricular commitments requires unwavering dedication. I am committed to excellence in all I do, from staying ahead on coursework to actively participating in group projects. My work ethic is also evident in my proactive approach to career development, such as attending workshops, networking events, and seeking internships that align with my future goals. My future goals involve working at the intersection of technology and social impact, using my skills to address issues like data privacy, cybersecurity, and algorithmic bias. I am driven by a desire to create solutions that benefit marginalized communities and contribute to a more equitable society. To me, leadership is about inspiring and empowering others to create positive change. As I continue my journey at UC San Diego, I am committed to embodying these traits, not just as a student but as a leader ready to make a meaningful impact in the world.
