Dream BIG, Rise HIGHER Scholarship
Growing up in Welch, West Virginia, my life has been a series of struggles and hardships that have shaped who I am today. From a young age, I faced adversity that tested my strength, resilience, and determination. I was relentlessly bullied in school, which often left me feeling isolated and insecure. At home, I experienced the pain of losing my sister, who tragically passed away, leaving an unimaginable void in my heart. During this difficult time, I also endured an abusive relationship with a boyfriend, which damaged my self-esteem and sense of safety. To cope with these emotional scars, I developed an eating disorder, seeking control over my body when everything else felt unpredictable and out of my grasp.
Despite these overwhelming challenges, I refused to let my circumstances define my future. I found strength in my dreams of a better life—one where I could make a difference and break free from the cycle of hardship that surrounded me. My experiences have fueled a deep sense of purpose and a desire to help others who are facing their own battles. I realized early on that education was my pathway out—a way to empower myself and create opportunities I never thought possible. I committed myself to working hard academically and personally, knowing that my future depended on my perseverance.
Throughout high school, I balanced a demanding schedule of work and school. I held a job all four years of high school, working evenings and weekends to support myself and contribute to my family. This taught me valuable lessons in responsibility, time management, and independence. Despite the exhaustion and stress, I never lost sight of my goal: to pursue higher education and build a better future. I also took college classes and dual enrollment courses while still in high school. These classes challenged me academically and allowed me to earn college credits early, giving me a glimpse of what college life would be like and showing me that I was capable of succeeding at a higher level.
My ambition is to become a forensic investigator. I want to work in law enforcement, seeking justice for victims and their families, and helping to solve crimes. I believe my background, filled with pain and hardship, has given me a unique perspective and a deep sense of empathy—qualities essential for someone in this field. I want to use my experiences to help others find hope and to contribute to creating safer communities. I see my education as the key to transforming my life and making a positive difference in the world.
However, I am fully aware that my journey is far from over. Financial barriers threaten to stand in my way. Coming from a family that cannot afford to support my college dreams, I have had to work tirelessly to support myself and save for the future. Despite these difficulties, I am determined to pursue my goals. I plan to continue applying for scholarships, work diligently in college, and leverage every opportunity to succeed. I believe that my perseverance, resilience, and unwavering commitment will help me overcome these barriers and achieve my dreams.
My personal experiences—being bullied, losing my sister, enduring an abusive relationship, and battling an eating disorder—have taught me some of life's harshest lessons about strength, perseverance, and hope. These hardships have shown me that even in the darkest moments, there is a way forward. They have motivated me to work harder and to never give up on my dreams. I want to use my education not only to better my own future but also to inspire others who are going through their own struggles. I believe that who I am becoming—someone who has faced adversity and continues to move forward—matters just as much as where I am going.
In addition to my academic pursuits, my job experiences have played a crucial role in shaping my character. Working throughout high school has taught me discipline, responsibility, and the importance of balancing multiple commitments. It has also strengthened my resolve to succeed and made me more determined to pursue my educational goals despite the obstacles I face. I see my work ethic and determination as essential tools that will help me succeed in college and beyond.
In conclusion, my life has been a journey marked by pain, perseverance, and hope. My experiences have taught me that adversity can be a powerful catalyst for growth and that education is the most valuable tool I have to create a better future. I am committed to using my education as a means to rise above my circumstances and to serve others through my chosen career. With determination, faith, and the support I seek through scholarships and educational opportunities, I am confident that I can turn my dreams into reality. I am ready to face the future, knowing that who I am becoming matters just as much as where I am going.
C. Burke Morris Scholarship
From the moment I stepped into my first high school class, I knew I needed to develop strong skills to manage my responsibilities effectively. Balancing regular high school classes, dual enrollment courses, vocational school, and later college classes has been one of my greatest personal accomplishments. Despite the overwhelming demands, I was able to stay focused, organized, and committed to my goals, all while working part-time to support myself and my family. This experience has taught me invaluable lessons about time management, discipline, resilience, and perseverance.
Managing such a busy schedule required me to develop excellent time management skills. I created detailed planners and prioritized my tasks, making sure I dedicated enough time to each class and assignment. I learned to plan ahead, setting specific goals for each day and week. This helped me avoid falling behind and ensured I stayed on top of my coursework. Staying organized was essential. I kept track of deadlines, class materials, and work shifts to prevent conflicts. When unexpected challenges arose, such as last-minute assignments or work emergencies, I learned to adapt quickly and adjust my schedule accordingly. This flexibility was crucial in maintaining my academic performance while managing my responsibilities outside school.
Balancing college coursework with my part-time job was particularly demanding, but it strengthened my resilience and problem-solving skills. There were days when I had back-to-back classes, homework, and shifts at my job, but I remained focused on my long-term goals. During these times, I learned to stay calm under pressure and to ask for help when needed—whether from teachers, classmates, or colleagues. My ability to stay organized and disciplined allowed me to excel academically even during stressful periods. For instance, I managed to maintain good grades while working over 20 hours a week, proving to myself that I could handle multiple responsibilities simultaneously.
This experience also taught me the importance of determination and perseverance. There were moments of exhaustion and frustration, but I refused to give up. I learned that setbacks are part of growth, and I used these challenges as motivation to work harder. My dedication to my education and my desire to provide for my family kept me going. I also developed strong communication skills by coordinating with teachers and employers to balance my schedule effectively. These skills have not only helped me succeed academically but also prepared me for future challenges in college and my career.
Managing multiple classes and a part-time job has also helped me develop a sense of responsibility and independence. I learned how to prioritize my health and well-being amid my busy schedule, ensuring I got enough rest and stayed motivated. This balancing act has made me more mature and confident in my ability to handle complex situations. It has reinforced my desire to pursue a future in forensic science, a field that demands discipline, organization, and resilience, qualities I have cultivated through my experiences.
In conclusion, managing a demanding academic schedule alongside a part-time job has been a challenging but incredibly rewarding journey. It has helped me grow into a responsible, disciplined individual ready to take on new academic and personal challenges. I am proud of my ability to balance these responsibilities and remain committed to my goals. I believe my perseverance, strong work ethic, and problem-solving skills make me a great candidate for this scholarship. With your support, I will be able to continue my education and work toward my dream of making a positive impact in the field of forensic science and beyond.
