Beyond my love for golf, I have always had a deep passion for working with children. As long as I can remember, I’ve wanted to become an elementary school teacher. There is something incredibly rewarding about helping young minds grow and seeing them reach their potential. Through volunteer work at local schools and tutoring younger students, I’ve witnessed firsthand the impact a dedicated and compassionate teacher can have on a child’s development. These experiences have solidified my decision to pursue a career in education.

WinnerMy Grandfather, My Hero: Michael R. Salas
Not all heroes wear capes—some wear Navy uniforms, carry golf clubs, and never miss a tournament. My grandfather, Michael R. Salas, is my hero, biggest supporter, and one of the greatest influences in my life. At 84 years old, he embodies strength, love, and unwavering dedication—to his country and to me.
A proud United States Navy veteran, Grandpa’s service was rooted in discipline, courage, and commitment to something greater than himself. His stories—always told with humility—taught me about sacrifice, honor, and integrity. These values have shaped who I am and who I strive to be.
Beyond his military service, my grandpa has always been my most loyal cheerleader, especially when it comes to golf. Golf isn’t just a sport for us—it’s our bond. Even now, he insists on golfing with me whenever he can, walking the course slowly but steadily, offering advice, laughs, and support. No matter how early the tee time or how far the drive, he’s there, cheering me on. His presence on the fairway is a reminder of his deep love and commitment.
When I committed to play golf at Vanguard University in Costa Mesa, California, grandpa was overjoyed. I’ll never forget his proud smile and the emotional hug he gave me. He reminded me that success isn’t just built on talent but on character—and he’s helped me develop both. His unwavering belief in me fuels my drive, even on the toughest days.
Grandpa has helped mold me into an honorable young woman through his example. He’s honest, kind, and present—qualities I admire deeply. He’s shown me that being honorable means standing up for what’s right, respecting others, and never forgetting those who’ve helped you along the way. Most importantly, he’s shown me that simply showing up, time after time, is one of the greatest acts of love.
I started playing golf at the age of three and began competing seriously in 2019. Since then, the sport has become an essential part of my life. It’s taught me patience, discipline, and resilience—lessons that apply far beyond the golf course. In the fall of 2025, I’ll begin my journey as a student-athlete on Vanguard’s women’s golf team, excited to grow both on and off the course.
My ultimate goal is to play at the highest level I can, but more importantly, to use my platform to give back—especially to the veteran community. Inspired by my grandfather’s service and the impact it’s had on my life, I’m passionate about honoring and supporting veterans however I can.
If awarded this scholarship, I would proudly use it to promote the veteran community and the foundation’s mission throughout my journey. One meaningful way I plan to give back is by organizing a veteran golf tournament—an event to raise funds that cover green fees and lunch for veterans who want to participate. Golf is more than a game; it’s a way to build community, find peace, and stay active. I believe this kind of event could help veterans reconnect, feel appreciated, and enjoy the same joy the sport has brought to my life. I would raise money by donations, offer free lessons for donations and raffle prizes.
Michael R. Salas is more than a veteran. He is my grandfather, my mentor, and the heart behind every swing I take. I carry his spirit with me always—and I hope to honor him with every step of my journey.
Thank you in advance for your consideration.
Best regards,
Rylee

One of the most challenging moments in my life occurred during a particularly difficult golf tournament when I was struggling to perform my best. As I faced unexpected setbacks on the course, I began to doubt myself and felt overwhelmed by pressure. In that moment, I turned to my faith, praying for the strength to stay calm and trusting that God had a plan for me, regardless of the outcome. My faith gave me the peace and confidence to refocus, let go of my self-doubt, and finish the tournament with a sense of grace and perseverance. That experience reminded me that no matter how challenging life gets, I am never alone, and through faith, I can find strength and clarity in any situation.

Valerie Rabb Academic Scholarship
Golf has been a central part of my life, not only because of my passion for the sport but also because of the valuable lessons it has taught me. Alongside my love for golf, I have a deep passion for working with children and aspire to become an elementary school teacher. This combination of interests has led me to pursue a future that merges both, with a plan to attend Vanguard University, where I can continue my competitive golf career while working toward my degree in education.
From the first time I picked up a golf club, I felt a drive to challenge myself and improve. Golf offers both physical and mental challenges, which push me to become a better athlete and a more disciplined individual. It has instilled in me essential life lessons such as perseverance, sportsmanship, and leadership. These lessons extend beyond the golf course and are crucial in shaping my approach to education and life in general. As I pursue competitive golf at the collegiate level, I aim to use these qualities to inspire and encourage others, whether on the course or in the classroom.
My desire to become a teacher has been shaped by my own experiences in school, especially with my third-grade teacher, who was not only a mentor but also a role model. I struggled at first with connecting to her, but over time, she helped me understand the value of patience, hard work, and dedication. Her influence has been a guiding force in my decision to pursue a career in elementary education. I have also gained experience through volunteer work at local schools and tutoring younger students. These experiences have shown me the profound impact a dedicated teacher can have on a child’s development and have further solidified my dream of becoming an elementary school teacher.
Attending Vanguard University is the next step in realizing my goals. The university’s strong reputation in education, along with its emphasis on faith, academic excellence, and community service, aligns perfectly with my aspirations. I am eager to learn from experienced educators who will help me develop the skills necessary to foster both academic and character development in my students. Vanguard’s commitment to personalized learning will also allow me to grow as an individual, while being part of a supportive community that values service and leadership.
In addition to my academic goals, I am determined to continue competing in golf at the collegiate level. As a female golfer, I have faced unique challenges, including breaking through stereotypes and navigating a sport that has historically been male-dominated. The physical and mental demands of golf can sometimes feel overwhelming, but I have learned to persevere through challenges. One of the biggest obstacles I faced was overcoming the pressure to perform at a high level while managing the balance between academics, athletics, and personal growth. However, through hard work, self-discipline, and a supportive network, I’ve been able to succeed.
Playing golf has been an incredibly rewarding experience because it allows me to grow as an athlete and a person. It has taught me the importance of resilience, and each round, whether successful or not, offers an opportunity to learn and improve. I enjoy the process of constantly refining my skills, setting goals, and challenging myself to perform better each time I step on

I am excited about the opportunity to attend Vanguard University, where I can continue developing as an athlete and future educator while contributing to my community.
From a young age, I understood that success requires both talent and determination. Over the years, I have focused on two main objectives: growing as a competitive golfer and becoming an elementary school teacher. These goals are deeply intertwined; the discipline, leadership, and communication skills I’ve developed through golf are directly transferable to teaching. My experiences with golf have instilled in me the belief that perseverance and focus are essential in all aspects of life. I want to inspire young minds in the same way my coaches and teachers have inspired me.
Golf has been an integral part of my life, teaching me invaluable lessons along the way. Competing at various levels has shown me how to handle pressure, maintain a positive attitude, and push through personal limitations. I’ve learned how to stay focused and calm in the face of challenges, skills that will be vital in the classroom as I work to support and encourage my students. Golf has also exposed me to diverse people and teams, allowing me to grow my understanding of communication and collaboration. My ultimate goal in golf is to one day become a PGA Professional and a golf coach, where I can pass on the knowledge I’ve gained to others. I want to share my love of the game, teach players of all ages, and foster their development on and off the course.
At Vanguard University, I plan to pursue a degree in elementary education while competing on the women’s golf team. Balancing academics and athletics will be challenging, but I believe the discipline, time management, and goal-setting skills I’ve gained through golf will help me succeed. I am eager to gain hands-on teaching experience through internships and to collaborate with faculty and peers who share my passion for education. Additionally, I will work toward becoming a golf coach and PGA Professional by continuing to refine my skills and learning more about the intricacies of teaching the game.
My professional goal is to become a dedicated and compassionate elementary teacher who creates a safe, engaging, and inclusive classroom. I want to inspire my students to pursue their passions and embrace the learning process, just as my mentors and teachers have inspired me. I hope to make a lasting impact on future generations, not only academically but emotionally and socially as well. In addition to teaching, I aspire to inspire others through golf, whether by coaching young players or guiding them toward a deeper understanding of the sport.
This scholarship will be instrumental in helping me attend Vanguard University, providing financial support that will allow me to focus fully on my studies, training, and community service. With this assistance, I can dedicate myself to both my academic and athletic pursuits, preparing me to excel in the classroom and on the golf course. I am excited to take the next step in my journey and grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the Vanguard community.

To turn my dreams into reality, I have developed a clear plan that focuses on my academic and athletic goals, drawing from my passion for education and competitive golf. My journey toward becoming an elementary school teacher and a collegiate athlete at Vanguard University starts with setting clear goals, gaining hands-on experience, and embracing the values of discipline, perseverance, and service.
My plan is to obtain a degree in elementary education, which is the foundation of my career aspiration. To achieve this, I have been accepted to Vanguard University’s Education Program. I will dedicate myself to excelling in my coursework, especially classes in child psychology, curriculum development, and classroom management. These courses will give me the tools I need to be an effective educator, while also allowing me to build connections with experienced professors. I plan to seek out internships or teaching assistant roles to gain practical experience and further refine my skills in a classroom setting.
Alongside my academic goals, I am committed to pursuing competitive golf at the collegiate level. I have always been driven to challenge myself, and golf has taught me valuable life lessons such as perseverance, sportsmanship, and leadership. These lessons will not only serve me in my athletic journey but also as I work to become an inspiring teacher. By reaching out to Vanguard's golf coaches and demonstrating my dedication, I will pursue a spot on the women’s golf team, integrating both my academic and athletic pursuits in a way that reflects my drive and determination.
My passion for education is further fueled by my volunteer work and experiences with children. I have always felt a deep connection to working with kids, and my third-grade teacher, who mentored me at a young age, has been a major influence. Through tutoring and volunteering in schools, I have witnessed the positive impact a teacher can have on a child’s growth. I will continue seeking volunteer opportunities in local schools to gain experience, build relationships with mentors, and learn more about the challenges and rewards of teaching. These hands-on experiences will help me understand how to reach children at different learning levels and foster their personal and academic growth.
Vanguard University is the ideal place for me to combine my passion for education and golf, as the university’s values align with my own. Vanguard emphasizes a commitment to faith, academic excellence, and community service—values that are important to me both as a future educator and athlete. I plan to take full advantage of community service opportunities, participate in student organizations related to education and sports, and develop leadership skills both on and off the golf course.
To support my education and athletic pursuits, I will apply for scholarships that can help reduce financial stress and allow me to focus on my goals. Maintaining a high GPA and staying dedicated to my athletic training will make me eligible for scholarships that support both my academic and athletic endeavors. I will also explore additional opportunities for financial support through part-time work or fundraising initiatives.
Ultimately, my journey will require discipline, focus, and adaptability. I will regularly reflect on my progress and adjust my goals as needed, ensuring that I stay on track to achieve both my dreams of becoming a teacher and continuing to compete in collegiate golf. My experiences so far have prepared me for this journey, and I am excited to take the next steps toward making my dreams a reality at Vanguard University.
