Supporting others' mental health has been an important and meaningful part of my life, even outside formal training or professional roles. I have helped others primarily through presence, listening, and consistency. Friends, classmates, and younger peers have often come to me during stressful periods, whether related to school pressure, personal struggles, or uncertainty about the future. I have learned that sometimes the most impactful support is simply being someone who listens without judgment, offers reassurance, and reminds others that they are not alone. I make a conscious effort to check in on people, especially during high-stress times like exams or major life changes, and to create spaces where emotions can be expressed honestly. My involvement in community activities and volunteering has also allowed me to support mental well-being indirectly. Working with children at events and youth races has shown me how encouragement, patience, and calm leadership can ease anxiety and build confidence. Helping a nervous child feel prepared or reminding someone that mistakes are part of learning has reinforced my belief that emotional support is just as important as practical guidance. These experiences have shaped how I approach relationships and leadership, with empathy and awareness at the center. As I continue my studies in zoology on a pre-veterinary track, I plan to carry this same mindset into my academic and professional life. Veterinary medicine is a field that requires emotional intelligence, not only when caring for animals but also when supporting the people who love them. I plan to use my education to become a veterinarian who communicates clearly, listens attentively, and provides reassurance during difficult moments. Whether delivering challenging news or guiding an owner through treatment decisions, emotional support plays a critical role in ethical and compassionate care. In the future, I plan to emotionally support others by leading with empathy and understanding in both professional and personal settings. Through my studies, I am developing discipline, communication skills, and emotional awareness that will enable me to serve others more effectively. By combining scientific knowledge with genuine compassion, I hope to create a positive, supportive environment for clients, colleagues, and my community, demonstrating that emotional care is vital to meaningful service.
John Nathan Lee Foundation Heart Scholarship
Cardiac disease has played a significant role in my life through my grandmother, who required a heart transplant as a result of her condition. Watching someone I love face such a serious medical challenge shaped my understanding of health, resilience, and the impact that illness can have on an entire family. While I was not the patient myself, the emotional, logistical, and psychological obstacles that came with her diagnosis and transplant deeply affected me and influenced how I view medicine, caregiving, and perseverance. One of the greatest obstacles was the constant uncertainty surrounding her health. Before the transplant, everyday life revolved around hospital visits, medical updates, and waiting. There was always the fear of complications and the unknown timeline of whether a donor heart would become available in time. As a family, we learned to live with unpredictability, often putting plans on hold and adjusting schedules around her care. This experience taught me patience and adaptability at a young age, as well as the importance of being present and supportive even when answers are unclear. Another challenge was witnessing the physical and emotional toll cardiac disease took on my grandmother. She went from being active and independent to needing significant medical support. Seeing her struggle with fatigue, limited mobility, and the emotional weight of waiting for a transplant was difficult. However, it also showed me what true strength looks like. She faced each day with determination and hope, even when recovery felt distant. Her resilience inspired me and reshaped how I define courage. It is not the absence of fear, but the ability to keep moving forward despite it. The transplant itself brought a new set of obstacles. While it offered a second chance at life, recovery was long and demanding. Post-transplant care involved strict medication routines, frequent follow-ups, and constant vigilance against infection or rejection. As a family, we learned how complex and ongoing medical care can be. This period reinforced the importance of teamwork between patients, families, and medical professionals. It also gave me a deep appreciation for the healthcare workers who dedicate their lives to saving and improving others’ lives. Emotionally, this experience taught me empathy and awareness. I became more conscious of how illness affects not just the individual, but everyone around them. It encouraged me to be more understanding, patient, and supportive in my relationships. It also sparked my interest in medicine and science, especially in fields focused on diagnostics and long-term care. Seeing how critical accurate monitoring and medical technology were in my grandmother’s survival helped shape my desire to pursue a career in veterinary medicine, where careful observation and early diagnosis can make a life-changing difference. Overall, overcoming the challenges associated with my grandmother’s cardiac disease strengthened my resilience and sense of purpose. It taught me the value of hope, the importance of family support, and the impact that skilled medical care can have on quality of life. This experience continues to motivate me to pursue a future in healthcare, where I can help improve lives and support families facing similar obstacles.
    Learner Calculus Scholarship
Calculus is important in the STEM field because it provides a universal language for understanding change, patterns, and relationships in complex systems. Many scientific and technological problems involve variables that change over time, and calculus provides researchers, engineers, and medical professionals with the tools to analyze and predict these changes. Without calculus, much of modern science, medicine, and technology would not function at the level of precision and innovation that exists today. One of the most important contributions of calculus is its ability to model real-world phenomena. In physics and engineering, calculus is used to describe motion, energy, and forces. In chemistry and biology, it helps explain reaction rates, population growth, diffusion, and biological processes. These models allow scientists to test ideas, make predictions, and improve designs before applying them in real settings. Calculus turns abstract concepts into measurable and testable information, which is essential across all STEM disciplines. In the medical and biological sciences, calculus plays a crucial role in understanding how systems behave over time. Concepts such as rates of change and accumulation are used to study blood flow, drug distribution, and disease progression. For students pursuing careers in veterinary medicine or biomedical research, calculus helps build the analytical thinking needed to interpret diagnostic data and medical imaging. Even when calculations are handled by software, understanding the underlying math allows professionals to evaluate results critically and make informed decisions. Calculus is also foundational for technology and data analysis. Fields such as computer science, artificial intelligence, and engineering rely on optimization and algorithms that are based on calculus principles. These tools help determine the most efficient solutions, whether designing a bridge, improving medical imaging technology, or analyzing large data sets. Calculus enables professionals to identify trends, minimize errors, and improve accuracy, all of which are critical in STEM-related careers. Beyond specific applications, calculus strengthens problem-solving and logical reasoning skills. Learning calculus teaches students to break down complex problems, recognize patterns, and approach challenges systematically. These skills are transferable across disciplines and help students adapt to new technologies and evolving fields. In STEM careers, where innovation and problem-solving are constant, this mindset is just as important as technical knowledge. Finally, calculus connects different STEM fields through shared concepts and methods. It allows collaboration across disciplines by providing common tools and frameworks. Whether studying climate change, developing medical technology, or advancing space exploration, calculus helps unify scientific efforts and push boundaries. In summary, calculus is essential in STEM because it explains change, supports innovation, and strengthens critical thinking. It equips students and professionals with the skills needed to understand complex systems, apply knowledge effectively, and contribute meaningfully to scientific and technological progress.

    Student Referee Scholarship
One of my favorite memories from my experience as a referee comes from volunteering at a local dirt bike race, where I helped manage the kids' events. The atmosphere that day was loud, fast-paced, and full of excitement, but the moment that stayed with me most was much quieter. A young rider was lined up for his first race, clearly nervous and overwhelmed. He kept looking back at his parents and adjusting his helmet, unsure if he was ready. Before the race started, I knelt down next to him, explained the rules again in simple terms, and reminded him that the goal was to have fun and do his best. When the race ended, he crossed the finish line smiling ear to ear, proud that he had completed it. Seeing his confidence grow in just a few minutes reminded me how impactful encouragement and fair guidance can be, especially for young athletes. Volunteering as a referee in dirt bike events has given me countless moments like this, where the role goes far beyond enforcing rules. It is about creating a safe environment, keeping things organized, and making sure every participant feels supported. Managing kids' events requires patience, clear communication, and the ability to stay calm under pressure. There were times when parents had questions, kids were emotional, or races did not go as planned. In those moments, I learned how important it is to listen, respond respectfully, and make fair, consistent decisions. These experiences taught me accountability and reinforced the idea that leadership often means putting others first. Being a sports referee has played a significant role in shaping my character. It has strengthened my confidence in making decisions and standing by them, even when they are not always popular. Officiating requires integrity, focus, and the ability to remain neutral, all skills that have carried over into other areas of my life. I have learned to manage stress, communicate clearly with diverse groups, and adapt quickly when situations change. These skills have helped me grow not only as a leader but also as a more responsible and self-aware individual. On a personal level, refereeing has helped me develop empathy and emotional maturity. Working closely with young riders reminded me of the influence adults can have on a child’s experience with sports. A calm explanation or a kind word can make the difference between frustration and confidence. These lessons have influenced how I interact with others outside of sports, encouraging me to lead with patience and understanding. Looking ahead, I hope to continue my involvement in officiating dirt bike events, especially youth races. I want to help create positive experiences that encourage kids to stay involved in sports and build confidence through competition. As I pursue my academic and career goals, I see officiating as a meaningful way to stay connected to my community while continuing to develop leadership skills. Volunteering as a referee has shown me the value of service, fairness, and mentorship, and I plan to carry those lessons forward in both my professional life and my continued involvement in sports.

Losing him was the first time I truly understood how permanent loss could be and how deeply it can change the way you see time, relationships, and purpose. His absence created a space in my life that forced me to grow emotionally and reflect on who I wanted to become. In the months following his passing, I struggled with feelings I had never faced before. Grief came in waves, sometimes subtle and sometimes overwhelming. I learned that loss does not simply disappear with time; it becomes something you learn to carry. Through that process, I became more reflective and more aware of how precious everyday moments truly are. I began to value conversations, shared experiences, and simple acts of care in ways I had not before. This loss taught me that presence matters more than perfection and that love is often shown through small, consistent actions. This experience also shaped my goals and outlook on life. Watching someone I loved face the end of life made me more aware of vulnerability and the importance of compassion. During a collaborative science project in my junior year of college, credit for my work was unintentionally given to another individual. The assignment was initially meant to be a straightforward group presentation on a topic in advanced biology, but what began as a routine academic exercise quickly became a valuable lesson in professionalism, integrity, and personal growth. This experience, though disappointing at first, ultimately challenged my perspective on recognition and prompted me to reflect deeply on my motivations, reactions, and long-term goals in both academic and professional settings. Our group researched a complex biological topic, synthesized scientific literature, and presented our findings. From the start, I assumed a leadership role, coordinating tasks, organizing the presentation, and encouraging open communication among group members. I dedicated many extra hours, often late into the evening, to refining explanations and designing visuals that would make the material both accessible and engaging for our audience. My motivation was not to stand out, but to ensure the quality of our work and support the group’s success. This experience also gave me the opportunity to push myself, developing new skills in research and public speaking that I knew would be valuable for my future career. On presentation day, one group member delivered most of the verbal explanation while I managed transitions between sections and handled technical support, including operating the slides and answering questions about the data. The instructor praised the presentation’s clarity and depth, but directed most credit to the presenter who had spoken the most. I felt disappointed and overlooked, knowing the effort I had invested behind the scenes. For a moment, I debated whether I should speak up and clarify my role in front of the class. However, I chose not to correct the situation publicly, recognizing that the instructor’s perspective was based on what was most visible. This made me realize that in group work, contributions are sometimes hidden from view, and recognition does not always reflect effort. My response was intentional. Rather than reacting emotionally, I took time to reflect on why I had contributed so much. I realized my primary goal was learning and growth, not recognition. The skills and knowledge I gained remained valuable, regardless of public acknowledgment. Strengthening my research, organizational, and communication abilities mattered more than brief recognition, which can sometimes lead to repeated misunderstandings. I recognized that advocating for oneself does not mean demanding praise but rather ensuring clarity and fairness. Moving forward, I began communicating more clearly about my responsibilities and contributions in group settings. I started providing regular updates to teammates and instructors and having open conversations about each group member’s role. This approach helped establish transparency while maintaining professionalism and respect within the team. This experience also heightened my awareness of the importance of recognizing others. Feeling overlooked showed me how easily contributions can be missed, especially for those working behind the scenes. I now make a conscious effort to acknowledge teammates and give credit where it is due, not just in academic projects but in extracurricular and professional settings as well. I have witnessed firsthand how a simple gesture of recognition can boost morale, build trust, and inspire greater collaboration within a team. Whether working in a classroom, a laboratory, or a volunteer organization, I strive to create an environment where everyone feels valued and motivated. The impact of this experience extended into my professional development. In veterinary medicine, teamwork is essential. Patient care depends on collaboration among veterinarians, technicians, assistants, and support staff. Recognition is not always evenly distributed, and outcomes often matter more than individual acknowledgment. This experience helped prepare me for that reality. It reinforced the importance of staying focused on purpose rather than praise and taught me how to navigate situations where recognition may not be immediate or visible. I learned to derive satisfaction from knowing that my efforts contribute meaningfully to a larger collective goal, even if the credit is not always apparent. It also strengthened my resilience. Instead of becoming discouraged, I learned to separate my self-worth from external validation. This mindset has helped me remain motivated during challenging academic moments, demanding work experiences, and even setbacks in my personal life. I now approach challenges with a clearer understanding that growth often happens quietly and that consistency, diligence, and integrity matter more than fleeting attention. This perspective has empowered me to persevere through setbacks, adapt to new environments, and continue striving for excellence, even when my efforts are not immediately acknowledged. If faced with a similar situation, I would respond with professionalism and proactive communication. I would prioritize collaboration and shared success while ensuring expectations and roles are clearly defined from the start. Rather than reacting with resentment or withdrawal, I would use the experience to promote clarity and mutual respect. Ultimately, this experience shaped my understanding of leadership and success. It taught me that integrity is doing quality work even when no one is watching, and that true character is revealed in our response to setbacks and challenges. Although the situation was difficult, it ultimately strengthened my confidence, empathy, and professionalism. I am reminded that while credit is temporary and often fleeting, the skills and values gained through hard work endure and continue to guide me in my veterinary career.

Animal care and welfare play a critical role in conservation efforts because the health of individual animals directly affects the survival of species and the stability of ecosystems. Conservation is not only about protecting habitats or managing populations but also about ensuring that animals are physically healthy, free from unnecessary suffering, and able to reproduce and thrive in their environments. When animals receive proper medical care and humane treatment, conservation programs are more effective, ethical, and sustainable. Animal welfare supports conservation by improving survival rates in both wild and managed populations. Injured or ill animals that receive timely medical attention have a greater chance of recovery and reintegration into their natural environments. In wildlife rehabilitation and conservation breeding programs, proper veterinary care ensures animals can safely contribute to population growth. Welfare-focused practices also reduce stress, which is essential because chronic stress can weaken immune systems and reduce reproductive success. By prioritizing animal care, conservationists protect not only individual animals but also the long-term health of entire species. Veterinary medicine is a cornerstone of modern conservation, and advanced diagnostic tools are becoming increasingly important. Imaging technologies such as radiography, ultrasound, CT, and MRI allow veterinarians to diagnose injuries, diseases, and developmental issues without invasive procedures. This is especially valuable in conservation settings where minimizing stress and physical harm is essential. Accurate diagnoses lead to better treatment decisions, shorter recovery times, and improved outcomes for animals in both wild and captive environments. I envision contributing to the field of conservation through a career in veterinary radiology, working across domestic, agricultural, and exotic animal populations. As a veterinary radiologist, I would support conservation efforts by providing precise diagnostic imaging that helps guide treatment and management decisions. In wildlife conservation, imaging can be used to evaluate fractures, internal injuries, reproductive health, and organ function in animals that may otherwise be difficult to assess. This information is crucial for determining whether an animal can be released back into the wild or requires long-term care. In agricultural and domestic animal settings, veterinary radiology also plays a role in conservation by supporting sustainable animal management practices. Healthy livestock populations contribute to food security while reducing the need for excessive resource use. Early detection of disease through imaging can prevent outbreaks that might otherwise lead to large-scale losses or environmental strain. By improving animal health and welfare in these systems, veterinarians help create a balance between human needs and environmental responsibility. My goal is to work collaboratively with veterinarians, conservation biologists, and researchers to apply imaging technology to benefit animals and ecosystems alike. I am particularly interested in how diagnostic imaging can be used in research to track disease patterns, monitor recovery, and improve treatment protocols for rare or endangered species. By contributing specialized knowledge in veterinary radiology, I hope to strengthen the connection between animal welfare and conservation science. Ultimately, protecting animals means protecting the ecosystems they are part of. Animal care and welfare are not separate from conservation but are essential to its success. Through a career in veterinary radiology, I plan to support ethical, science-based conservation efforts that prioritize animal health, compassion, and long-term sustainability across all fields.

At first, it felt like just another job, but it quickly became one of my most meaningful experiences. At the animal hospital, I was given responsibilities that mattered. I helped with animal restraint, assisted during exams, and supported the team with cleaning, feeding, and monitoring patients. Every day brought new challenges and learning opportunities. I worked with sick, injured, and scared animals, and I saw firsthand how much trust both animals and their owners placed in the veterinary team. That trust reminded me that even small actions, like speaking calmly to a nervous dog or carefully following post-operative instructions, could make a big difference. Through this experience, I discovered a new level of responsibility and maturity. I learned how to remain calm under pressure, communicate clearly with coworkers and pet owners, and be adaptable when unexpected problems arise. More than anything, I realized how deeply I cared about animal welfare. This job helped solidify my goal of becoming a veterinarian, specifically in veterinary radiology, where I hope to contribute to early diagnosis and better treatment outcomes for animals. This experience also changed the way I view the world and my community. I started to see how connected people are to their animals and how those bonds provide comfort, support, and emotional strength. In my community, I witnessed how a local veterinary clinic plays an essential role in maintaining the health and happiness of families. It reminded me that veterinarians do not just treat animals; they support the entire ecosystem of people and pets in their care. The experience gave me a more profound sense of purpose and showed me how I want to serve the world. I want to become a part of that supportive network. I want to give back to my community by helping animals live longer and healthier lives. I want to educate others about animal care and provide knowledge and compassion. This critical experience helped me understand who I am, what I value, and what kind of difference I want to make. It opened my eyes and set me on a clear path, and I am grateful every day that I took that job and gave it everything I had.

I plan to be involved not only in clinical work but also in outreach programs that serve underserved communities. Through these efforts, I aim to enhance access to veterinary care and cultivate a deeper appreciation for animals within the community. Failure has been an important teacher in my life. At one point during high school, I struggled to balance my academics, work, and leadership activities. I took on too many responsibilities at once and ended up falling behind in one of my classes. It was a challenging experience, but it taught me the importance of time management and the value of seeking help when needed. I learned that failure is not a permanent state but rather a stepping stone toward improvement. This lesson has made me a more resilient and determined individual. Mentorship has had a profoundly positive impact on my life. I have been fortunate to have mentors at my workplace, Alpine Animal Hospital, who encouraged me to pursue higher education in veterinary medicine. Their guidance helped me gain confidence in my skills and showed me that with hard work and dedication, I could achieve my dreams. Having someone believe in my potential was life-changing, and it motivates me to someday mentor others as well. What makes me unique is my unwavering commitment to both animals and people. My background of balancing work, academics, and community involvement has given me a strong sense of responsibility. My identity as someone compassionate, driven, and determined has shaped my journey. My talents in leadership and communication have enabled me to contribute to my community through volunteering at local events, mentoring younger students, and participating in charity fundraisers. In every step I take, I hope to build a future where compassion, knowledge, and service guide my actions. I am excited to continue this journey, using the lessons I have learned to make a lasting and meaningful difference in the world.

I am also compassionate and empathetic, qualities that are essential when working with both animals and people. I enjoy working in teams, listening to others, and finding ways to collaborate toward a common goal. On the other hand, one weakness I have struggled with is taking on too much at once. I often try to balance school, work, leadership activities, and personal commitments, which sometimes leads to stress. However, over time, I have learned the importance of prioritizing, asking for help when necessary, and maintaining a healthy balance between responsibilities and self-care. My hopes and dreams are deeply rooted in helping others, both human and animal. As a future veterinary radiologist, I plan to work across many fields, including domestic pets, agricultural livestock, and exotic wildlife. I hope to contribute to conservation efforts, improve the health and welfare of animals, and inspire others to value and protect the natural world. I also dream of becoming involved with organizations that promote education about animal health and welfare, and I would love to help create outreach programs that bring veterinary services and education to underserved communities. My vision for the future is one where I am actively involved in improving the lives of animals while also uplifting the community around me. I see myself working in veterinary hospitals, conservation organizations, and research projects that help advance both animal medicine and environmental sustainability. I plan to collaborate with other veterinary professionals to develop innovative technologies and techniques that enhance diagnostic accuracy and improve treatment outcomes. I also want to be an advocate for the responsible and ethical treatment of all animals, using my voice and skills to promote awareness and positive change. Receiving this scholarship would be an incredible support as I move toward achieving the dreams I hold. With this support, I will be able to fully leverage the opportunities available to me, participate in internships and research, and gain the experience necessary to become a skilled and compassionate veterinary professional. Ultimately, the investment in my education will have a ripple effect, benefiting not only my own life but also the lives of the countless animals and people I will serve throughout my career. I am deeply motivated to make a meaningful difference, and I am committed to using the knowledge, skills, and opportunities I gain through higher education to create a better, more compassionate world.

Animal care and welfare play an essential role in conservation efforts by ensuring that both individual animals and entire species are protected, supported, and treated with dignity. Conservation is not only about preserving land or ecosystems but also about maintaining the health and well-being of the animals that inhabit these spaces. Proper animal care practices are crucial because healthy animals are better able to survive, reproduce, and contribute to their environments. When conservation efforts focus on improving welfare, they strengthen the resilience of animal populations and enhance the stability of ecosystems. A critical part of animal welfare in conservation is providing medical care, rehabilitation, and monitoring for both wild and captive animal populations. This is where veterinary medicine, including specialized fields like radiology, plays a crucial role. Medical imaging aids in detecting injuries, illnesses, and internal conditions that may not be visible to the naked eye. By diagnosing and treating these issues early, veterinarians can prevent the spread of diseases and improve the survival rates of endangered animals. I plan to contribute to this vital work by pursuing a career as a veterinary radiologist. My goal is to work across all fields of animal care, including domestic pets, agricultural livestock, and exotic or wild species. By doing so, I can have a broad impact on animal welfare and conservation efforts. For domestic animals, I aim to enhance their quality of life by identifying health issues early, enabling more effective treatment outcomes. For agricultural animals, I strive to support their health, ensuring food safety and promoting sustainable farming practices. Ultimately, I aim to collaborate with conservation organizations, wildlife rehabilitation centers, and zoos to monitor and support the health of species that are crucial to the balance of ecosystems. Working as a veterinary radiologist will enable me to collaborate with researchers, conservationists, and veterinarians worldwide, fostering a deeper understanding of animal health and disease. I plan to utilize advanced imaging technology to support research projects that track the health trends of endangered species. I also hope to contribute to breeding programs for species at risk of extinction by helping assess the health of breeding animals and their offspring. Radiology offers non-invasive methods for gathering information about animals without causing them additional stress or harm, which is crucial in conservation efforts. In the future, I would also like to educate others about the importance of animal welfare in conservation. Whether through public outreach, collaboration with universities, or mentoring veterinary students, disseminating knowledge is a vital component of creating a lasting impact. Conservation is a team effort, and I want to be someone who not only helps animals directly but also inspires others to value and protect them. Animal care and welfare are deeply connected to the success of conservation efforts. By focusing on health, respect, and humane treatment, we can create stronger and more sustainable ecosystems. As a future veterinary radiologist, I am dedicated to utilizing my skills to make a positive impact on animals of all kinds and to contribute meaningfully to global conservation efforts. One of the most significant challenges I have faced in my life was balancing my responsibilities as a student, employee, and leader while working toward my dream of becoming a veterinarian. There was a time when I was juggling advanced college-level courses, working at Alpine Animal Hospital, and serving as a camp counselor, all while trying to maintain high academic performance and stay focused on my long-term goals. The pressure felt overwhelming, and for a while, I questioned whether I could manage everything without letting something slip. However, through perseverance, discipline, and support, I achieved something significant: I completed my associate degree in high school and began preparing for a successful transition into university life. At the center of this achievement was my determination never to give up, no matter how difficult things became. I used time management as my most essential strategy. I created weekly schedules, prioritized assignments, and set aside time for rest and self-care. I learned to break large tasks into smaller, manageable steps to stay focused without feeling too overwhelmed. Whether it was preparing for a test, working long shifts at the veterinary clinic, or planning activities for young campers, I found a way to stay organized and give each responsibility the attention it deserved. I also learned to ask for help and use the resources around me. As a first-generation college student, I did not always know what to expect or how to handle specific academic challenges. But instead of letting that hold me back, I contacted teachers, advisors, and mentors. They offered guidance, encouragement, and valuable advice that helped me stay on track. This taught me that seeking help is not a sign of weakness but strength and growth. Another key skill I developed was self-discipline. There were many days when I felt tired or discouraged, but I reminded myself why I was working so hard. I stayed focused on becoming a veterinarian and used that as motivation to keep going. I kept a clear vision of the future I wanted and let that vision guide my decisions and actions. Through this experience, I achieved something meaningful; I can rise above challenges and work through hardship to accomplish my goals. I did not just complete a degree or earn good grades—I became more resilient, confident, and prepared for the demands of a veterinary career. The lessons I learned will stay with me for life. As I study zoology on the pre-veterinary track at Washington State University, I carry those same skills. I know there will be more challenges ahead, but I also know I can face them. My past experiences have shaped me into someone who does not give up, works hard, and uses every obstacle as an opportunity to grow stronger and move closer to success.

I come from a hardworking and supportive family that has always encouraged me to pursue my passions. As a first-generation college student, I have had to navigate the challenges of higher education on my own, but my family’s values of determination and perseverance have guided me. One of my biggest inspirations is my dad, who creates the artwork for the Desert 100 dirt bike race in eastern Washington. Together, we sell apparel featuring his designs at the event, which has taught me about responsibility, creativity, and the power of community involvement. My passion for animals and science led me to pursue a degree in zoology with a pre-veterinary track at Washington State University. I have always loved animals; that passion was strengthened through my work at Alpine Animal Hospital. There, I gained hands-on experience and learned how vital accurate diagnosis and compassionate care are in veterinary medicine. My goal is to become a veterinarian specializing in veterinary radiology, using advanced technology to improve the quality of animal care. With my education, I hope to serve communities with limited access to veterinary services, educate pet owners, and mentor future veterinary students. One of my favorite local community events that I have had the opportunity to participate in is the Desert 100. This annual dirt bike race, held in eastern Washington, is an exciting, challenging competition and a meaningful tradition that brings people together through motorsports, art, and community spirit. It is an event that I look forward to every year, not just because of the race itself but because of my family's unique role in supporting it. I have participated in the Desert 100 as part of a tag team, where two riders take turns navigating a rugged, demanding course filled with rocks, sand, steep climbs, and long stretches of unpredictable terrain. The race is intense and pushes both the body and mind, but it is also gratifying. The teamwork required in the tag team category has taught me about trust, communication, and perseverance. Working closely with my teammates, we have learned to support each other, stay focused under pressure, and celebrate our efforts regardless of the outcome. What makes this event even more meaningful is the connection my family has to it. My dad creates the official artwork for the Desert 100, and every year, we design and sell a wide range of apparel, including T-shirts, sweatshirts, and hats featuring his original designs. Seeing riders and fans wearing shirts from our family’s hard work is fantastic. Watching people proudly wear the artwork that my dad created brings a unique sense of pride and joy. Being involved in this part of the event has given me a better understanding of how much time, effort, and creativity goes into bringing a community event to life. Through this experience, I have seen firsthand how motorsports can unite people. The Desert 100 is more than just a race. It celebrates shared passions, community support, and family tradition. Entire families travel from all over to camp, ride, volunteer, and enjoy the weekend together. Vendors, volunteers, racers, and spectators contribute to the lively atmosphere that makes the event unique. In the future, I would love to see the Desert 100 continue to grow in ways that make it even more impactful. It would be wonderful to see more youth programs involved, such as safety clinics for beginner riders or opportunities for young people to volunteer and learn more about motorsports. It would also be meaningful to expand the charitable side of the event by donating a portion of apparel sales to local causes such as trail preservation, animal rescue, or youth sports programs. These additions could make the event more inclusive and give back to the communities that support it year after year. The Desert 100 has played a significant role in my life. It has strengthened my love for racing, taught me valuable life lessons, brought my family closer together, and shown me the power of community. I am proud to be part of an event that celebrates the spirit of competition and supports creativity, teamwork, and giving back.

I have always believed that giving back to my community is essential, and I have prioritized contributing in ways that align with my passion for animal care. One of my most meaningful contributions has been my work at Alpine Animal Hospital. I assisted in animals' daily care, supported veterinary staff, and helped ensure that every patient received the attention and treatment they needed. By providing hands-on support in a clinical setting, I was able to help both animals and their owners by contributing to a compassionate and efficient environment. This experience reinforced my commitment to veterinary medicine and solidified my decision to become a veterinarian, not a veterinary assistant. In addition to working in a clinical setting, I have contributed to my community by sharing my knowledge and passion for animals with others. Whether helping neighbors care for their pets, assisting with livestock in my local area, or educating younger individuals about responsible pet ownership, I have always sought to make a positive impact. I understand that veterinary medicine is not just about treating animals but also about educating and supporting the people who care for them. My contributions have allowed me to help animals live healthier lives while strengthening the connection between people and their pets. Several vital reasons drive my decision to pursue a career as a veterinarian. First, I have a deep passion for animal health and welfare. From an early age, I was fascinated by how animals interact with the world and rely on humans for care and protection. My experiences in veterinary settings have only deepened my understanding of how critical veterinary medicine is in ensuring the well-being of animals. I want to dedicate my life to providing medical care that improves the quality of life for animals of all kinds. Second, I am drawn to veterinary medicine because of its challenge and complexity. Veterinary science requires problem-solving skills, medical knowledge, and a strong commitment to lifelong learning. Animals cannot always communicate their pain or discomfort, so veterinarians must rely on their expertise and instincts to diagnose and treat conditions. I am eager to take on this challenge and develop the skills necessary to become a knowledgeable and compassionate veterinarian. Third, veterinarians play a crucial role in public health and community well-being. Whether through disease prevention, food safety, or educating pet owners, veterinarians significantly impact society. I want to contribute to the field by providing direct medical care and promoting responsible pet ownership, animal welfare, and advancements in veterinary technology. I aim to use my education and experience to make a meaningful difference in individual animal lives and the broader veterinary community. While I appreciate the dedication of veterinary assistants, my path is leading me toward becoming a veterinarian. I am committed to continuing my education, gaining hands-on experience, and ultimately making a lasting impact in veterinary medicine. Through my community contributions and passion for animal health, I am confident I am on the right path toward achieving my goal.

Music has significantly shaped my emotions, motivation, and overall experience throughout high school. Music was always present whether I was studying for a difficult exam, unwinding after a long day, or finding inspiration during challenging moments. It served as a source of comfort, focus, and motivation, allowing me to navigate the ups and downs of my high school years with greater ease. One of the most critical ways music affected my life was by helping me manage stress. High school was filled with academic pressures, extracurricular responsibilities, and personal challenges. There were times when deadlines felt overwhelming, and the workload seemed never-ending. During these moments, music provided an escape from stress, allowing me to reset my mind and regain focus. Whether I was listening to calming instrumental pieces while studying or upbeat songs to lift my mood, music had a way of helping me push through difficult times. Music also played a crucial role in keeping me motivated. Many late nights were spent preparing for exams, writing essays, or completing projects, and music made those moments more bearable. Fast-paced songs with inspiring lyrics kept me energized when feeling drained, while softer melodies helped me concentrate on tasks that required deep focus. Music created an atmosphere that made studying feel less like a chore and more like a personal journey toward success. Beyond academics, music brought me closer to my friends and family. Sharing favorite songs, discovering new artists, and attending live performances created lasting memories and strengthened my relationships. Some of my best high school moments involved singing along to songs during road trips, creating playlists with friends, or bonding over shared music interests. Music brings people together and played an essential role in my social life throughout high school. Music also provided a form of emotional expression. High school was a time of growth, self-discovery, and sometimes uncertainty. Whenever I needed to process my emotions, I turned to music that resonated with my feelings. Whether I was experiencing joy, frustration, or sadness, there was always a song that captured my emotions perfectly. Music helped me reflect on my experiences and provided comfort during difficult times. As I move forward, I know that music will continue to be a source of inspiration and support. A movie that has had the most significant impact on my life is Soul. This animated film tells the story of Joe Gardner, a middle school music teacher who dreams of becoming a professional jazz musician. Through an unexpected journey in the afterlife, Joe learns profound lessons about passion, purpose, and what makes life meaningful. The themes of this movie deeply resonated with me because they challenged how I view success, personal fulfillment, and the importance of appreciating everyday moments. One of the most powerful messages in Soul is the idea that a single passion or dream should not define a person’s entire existence. Joe spends most of his life believing that his purpose is to become a great musician, but as the film progresses, he realizes that life is more than just achieving one goal. This message profoundly impacted me because I have always been driven and focused on becoming a veterinarian. While my passion for animals and veterinary medicine remains strong, Soul reminded me that life is also about appreciating the journey. Small moments like helping a pet owner understand their animal’s needs, mentoring younger students interested in veterinary science, or simply enjoying a quiet moment in nature are just as meaningful as reaching my ultimate career goal. Another aspect of the film that resonated with me was its emphasis on perspective. The character 22, a soul who has not yet been born, struggles to understand why life is worth living. Only through experiencing small, seemingly ordinary moments—like feeling the wind, watching a leaf fall, or enjoying music- does 22 realize how beautiful and valuable life is. This idea encouraged me to reflect on my own life and recognize the importance of finding joy in simple experiences. As a student, I often focus on meeting deadlines, studying for exams, and preparing for my future, sometimes forgetting to enjoy the present. This film reminded me that even the most ordinary days are filled with moments of beauty and wonder and that appreciating them can make life more fulfilling. Lastly, Soul reinforced that success is not always measured by external achievements but by our impact on others. Joe initially believes that performing with a famous jazz musician will be the highlight of his life. Still, he later realizes that his influence lies in the students he teaches and the people he inspires. This deeply resonated with me because I want my future career to be about more than just professional accomplishments. I want to make a real difference in the lives of animals and the people who love them. Whether through veterinary care, community outreach, or mentorship, I want to positively impact the world just as Joe ultimately does in the film. Soul changed the way I view success, happiness, and personal fulfillment. It reminded me to embrace life’s journey, appreciate small moments, and recognize the value of our impact on others. These lessons continue to shape my outlook on life, and they will stay with me as I pursue my dreams and work to make a meaningful difference in the world.

The relationship between law enforcement agencies and the African American community in the United States has been shaped by a history of mistrust, systemic inequalities, and incidents of racial discrimination. Many African Americans have experienced or witnessed racial profiling, excessive use of force, and unequal treatment within the justice system. These experiences have led to strained relationships and a deep sense of distrust. To rebuild this relationship, law enforcement agencies must commit to transparency, accountability, and meaningful community engagement. By focusing on these areas, police departments can foster trust, improve communication, and work toward a justice system that treats all citizens fairly. One of the most essential steps law enforcement agencies must take is increasing transparency and accountability. Implementing body cameras and enforcing strict policies regarding their use can help ensure that officer conduct is monitored and that the public can access objective evidence when incidents occur. Additionally, independent oversight committees should be established to review cases of alleged misconduct. Too often, internal investigations fail to hold officers accountable, which further erodes public trust. If independent organizations oversee these investigations, the community may feel more confident that justice is being served relatively. Another critical area of improvement is officer training. Police officers should receive extensive education on de-escalation techniques, cultural awareness, and implicit bias. Training officers to handle encounters without unnecessary force can lead to more peaceful interactions. Cultural awareness education can help officers better understand the communities they serve, ensuring they approach different cultural backgrounds respectfully. Additionally, recruiting more African American officers and individuals from diverse backgrounds can help create a force more representative of the community. When law enforcement reflects the population it serves, it becomes easier to build connections and develop mutual understanding. Community engagement is another vital step in improving relationships. Law enforcement should not only be present in communities when crime occurs but should also actively participate in positive initiatives. Programs such as youth mentorship, town hall meetings, and community policing can create personal connections between officers and residents. Officers who engage in these efforts become more than just figures of authority. They become trusted community members who are seen as protectors rather than adversaries. By engaging with local leaders and listening to community concerns, police departments can demonstrate a commitment to serving and protecting all people equally. In addition to transparency, training, and engagement, law enforcement agencies must advocate for broader criminal justice reforms. Racial profiling and discriminatory policing practices should be eliminated through policy changes that promote fairness and equality. Data collection on police interactions should be improved to identify patterns of racial bias, and departments should take steps to address these issues directly. Furthermore, supporting social programs that address economic and educational disparities can help reduce crime and prevent harmful interactions with law enforcement. Building a strong and positive relationship between law enforcement and the African American community will not happen overnight. However, progress can be made through consistent efforts to increase transparency, improve training, and engage with communities meaningfully. Law enforcement agencies must show a genuine commitment to change and work to rebuild trust through action rather than just words. By implementing these reforms, police departments can take an essential step toward ensuring a more just and equitable society.

Throughout high school, many teachers influenced my academic journey, but none had as profound an impact as my history teacher, Mr. Donovan. His class was more than just a history lesson, it was a crash course in responsibility, critical thinking, and self-discipline. While many high school courses focused on memorization and structured assignments, Mr. Donovan’s teaching style mirrored that of a college professor. He treated us like college students, demanding a higher level of independence and accountability, which ultimately prepared me for the academic challenges I would face beyond high school. From the first day in Mr. Donovan’s class, it was clear that his expectations were different. He did not believe in hand-holding or constant reminders about deadlines. Instead, he gave us syllabi with long-term assignments and expected us to manage our time wisely. If we forgot about a paper or a project, there was no last-minute extension or extra credit to save us. At first, this was an adjustment for many students, including myself. I was used to teachers providing frequent reminders, structured study guides, and leniency with late work. However, Mr. Donovan made it clear that in the real world, and especially in college, no one would be there to remind us to turn in our work constantly. It was up to us to stay organized and meet expectations. His class was also discussion-based, encouraging us to form and defend our opinions with evidence. He did not just ask us to memorize dates and events; he challenged us to analyze history, question different perspectives, and think critically. At times, this was frustrating, as there were rarely simple answers. However, I came to appreciate how he pushed us to engage with the material on a deeper level. This skill has proven invaluable as I transition into a college setting where independent thought and analysis are expected. The final research paper was one of the most defining moments in his class. Unlike previous assignments in high school, this paper required extensive research, proper citations, and a well-organized argument. There were no step-by-step instructions, just a prompt and a deadline. I remember feeling overwhelmed at first, but through the process, I learned how to manage a large project, conduct thorough research, and refine my writing. The experience made me a more confident and capable student, proving that I could handle college-level work. Beyond academics, Mr. Donovan also instilled in me the importance of perseverance and self-discipline. He held us to high standards but was also supportive, always encouraging students to rise to the challenge rather than shy away from it. He taught me that failure was not something to fear, but rather an opportunity to improve. If I received a lower grade than expected, he encouraged me to analyze what went wrong, learn from it, and do better next time. This mindset has helped me navigate not just school but life in general. Preparing for the rigorous college coursework, I am grateful for the lessons I learned in Mr. Donovan’s class. He did more than teach history; he taught responsibility, time management, and critical thinking. Because of him, I feel confident in my ability to succeed in a college environment. His influence has shaped the way I approach challenges, and his lessons will continue to guide me as I pursue my future goals.

Movie Title: Uncharted Paths: The Road to Veterinary Medicine Opening Scene: The screen fades in from black, revealing a vast forest bathed in the golden light of dawn. A dirt trail winds through towering pine trees, its edges blurred by morning mist. Suddenly, the distant hum of an engine breaks the stillness, growing louder until a dirt bike bursts into frame, kicking up dust and leaves. The rider, me, wears a well-worn helmet, speckled with mud from past rides. My grip on the handlebars is steady, my body leaning into the sharp turns as I navigate the unpredictable terrain. A voiceover begins: "Life isn’t a smooth road. It’s a series of sharp turns, unexpected detours, and steep climbs. But I’ve learned that no matter how rough the terrain, persistence and passion will carry me forward." The camera follows as I race through the winding trail, each obstacle mirroring the challenges I’ve faced. A sudden dip in the path catches me off guard, and the bike jolts. For a split second, control slips from my hands, but I quickly regain balance and push forward, unfazed. The determination in my ride reflects the perseverance I’ve developed throughout my journey, from balancing academics and work to overcoming self-doubt and setbacks. Every turn represents a moment in my life where I had to make a choice, push through adversity, and keep going despite the unknown ahead. The scene transitions seamlessly, blurring from the dirt track to a veterinary clinic. The roar of the engine fades into the quiet hum of medical equipment. The same steady hands that once gripped handlebars now adjust an ultrasound probe on an injured dog. My once dirt-streaked gloves are replaced with sterile ones, my eyes just as focused, my determination unwavering. A flashback montage begins: volunteering as a camp counselor, leading children through team-building activities, studying late into the night, determined to excel in my coursework, assisting at Alpine Animal Hospital, where I learned to handle animals with both skill and compassion. These moments, once separate, now weave together into a larger story, each experience shaping me into the person I am today. The persistence I learned from racing, the leadership I developed as a counselor, and the discipline I built through my studies all come together to prepare me for the path I am forging in veterinary medicine. The scene returns to the clinic, where I carefully examine a radiograph on a glowing screen. My voiceover continues: "Every challenge, every twist in the road, has led me here. Veterinary radiology is my path, the intersection of my love for animals, science, and technology. The road ahead won’t be easy, but neither was the journey that brought me to this moment." A fellow veterinarian approaches, nodding as I explain my observations. The patient, a golden retriever, lifts its head, sensing the quiet care in the room. I gently pat its head, feeling a deep sense of purpose. This is why I push forward, why I have fought through every challenge. The work I do will help animals receive better care, will aid veterinarians in making accurate diagnoses, and will ultimately improve lives. The camera shifts once more, returning to the open road. The dirt bike now rests at the top of a hill, the sun setting behind it. I pull off my helmet and breathe deeply, surveying the landscape ahead. The road continues into the unknown, but I am ready for whatever comes next. "This is only the beginning."

I understand how challenging this journey can be, and I want to inspire and encourage others who are passionate about animal health. Beyond my professional aspirations, my dream reflects my commitment to lifelong learning, leadership, and giving back to the community. My experiences as a camp counselor at the CDA Kroc Center have taught me the importance of mentorship, teamwork, and compassion, which are just as important in veterinary medicine as technical expertise. Additionally, my participation in dirt bike racing has strengthened my resilience, problem-solving skills, and ability to perform under pressure. These experiences have shaped me into a determined individual who embraces challenges as opportunities for growth. Daniel’s message, “Complete Your Dream,” reminds me that perseverance and dedication are the keys to achieving any goal. Becoming a veterinary radiologist is not just a career choice for me, it is a lifelong ambition that will allow me to make a real difference in the lives of animals and their owners. Through education, hands-on experience, and unwavering commitment, I am determined to complete my dream and contribute to the advancement of veterinary medicine.

Throughout my life, I have faced challenges that have shaped my determination and resilience, ultimately guiding me toward higher education and my goal of becoming a veterinary radiologist. My experiences in academics, leadership, and veterinary work have all inspired me to pursue a college degree at WSU, where I plan to major in zoology on the pre-veterinary track. Like many students, I have encountered obstacles that tested my perseverance. Balancing academics with leadership roles and work commitments has required discipline, adaptability, and time management. One of the most significant challenges I faced was learning to navigate the demands of school while maintaining personal and professional responsibilities. Instead of letting these difficulties discourage me, I used them as motivation to push forward, proving that hard work and persistence can lead to success. Additionally, working in a professional setting at Alpine Animal Hospital while still a student was both a challenge and a privilege. The fast-paced environment required me to learn quickly, think critically, and stay focused under pressure. At times, it was overwhelming, but these experiences ultimately strengthened my ability to handle stressful situations, a skill essential in my future career as a veterinarian. Learning to overcome challenges in a real-world setting helped me develop resilience, which I will carry throughout my academic journey and beyond. Every challenge I have faced has reinforced my desire to pursue higher education. My experiences in veterinary medicine have been particularly influential, as they have shown me firsthand the importance of continued learning and expertise. One moment that stands out to me was witnessing a veterinarian use radiographic imaging to diagnose a complex case. Their ability to interpret images with precision and provide life-saving treatment inspired me to explore the field of veterinary radiology. I realized that technology plays a crucial role in animal healthcare, and I want to be at the forefront of this innovation. My time as a camp counselor at the CDA Kroc Center also gave me valuable leadership experience. Working with children taught me patience, empathy, and the importance of mentorship. Encouraging a homesick camper to feel included and confident was one of my most rewarding experiences. This role reinforced my belief that small actions can make a big difference, a lesson I plan to carry into my veterinary career. Whether helping an animal in distress or guiding a nervous pet owner, I understand that compassion and communication are just as important as technical skills. Pursuing a college degree is more than just a step toward a career, it is an opportunity for personal and professional growth. At WSU, I will have the chance to engage in rigorous coursework, gain hands-on experience, and collaborate with professionals who share my passion for veterinary medicine. My zoology major will provide me with a strong foundation in animal science, while the pre-veterinary track will prepare me for the challenges of veterinary school. Beyond academics, I am excited to contribute to my community and continue developing my leadership skills. My mentoring, teamwork, and problem-solving background has given me a strong foundation, but I know there is always room for growth. I look forward to participating in veterinary outreach programs, research opportunities, and other initiatives that will allow me to apply my knowledge meaningfully. The obstacles I have faced have only made me more determined to succeed. Every challenge has been a learning experience, reinforcing my commitment to veterinary medicine and higher education. My experiences in leadership, veterinary work, and academics have shaped me into someone eager to learn, grow, and give back to the community. As I continue my education, I am motivated by the knowledge that my efforts will one day allow me to make a real difference in veterinary medicine. Whether through advanced imaging technology, collaboration with fellow veterinarians, or compassionate care for animals, I am excited to use my education to improve the lives of both animals and their owners. Higher education is not just a means to an end, it is a journey that will equip me with the skills, knowledge, and experiences necessary to achieve my dreams. I am ready to embrace the challenges ahead, knowing they will only make me stronger and more prepared for the future.
