My name is Ryan Rainey, and I am a proud student at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (NCAT), where I am majoring in Graphic Design with a concentration in User Experience and minoring in Business. I was inducted into the Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society for maintaining a 3.8 GPA throughout my freshman year. I have been described as resilient, focused, and unapologetically ambitious.
I am an undergraduate committed to breaking generational barriers and redefining what is possible for young women in creative and business spaces. Growing up in a community where access to resources was limited, I learned to turn challenges into motivation and setbacks into strategy. My passion lies in the power of visual communication. I have actively participated in initiatives that promote inclusion, service, and representation both on campus and in my community.
Graphic design is more than a major for me. It is my voice, my outlet, and my purpose. It allows me to merge creativity with intention, art with impact. Whether through freelance work, personal projects, or future entrepreneurial ventures, I aim to use design to uplift underrepresented voices and advocate for causes that matter.
Scholarships will not only help ease the financial burden of my education but also allow me to focus more deeply on creating meaningful work and giving back. My goal is to empower others through design to prove that dreams are worth chasing, especially when the odds are stacked against you.

My mother is the most influential person in my life. Her strength, independence, sacrifices, and dedication to me while holding a fast-paced full-time position were phenomenal. Watching her has shaped me into the person I am today. I have faced and overcome significant personal challenges such as being involved in a serious car accident in 2024. Although I was injured and could no longer write with my right hand, I fought through moments of being discouraged. I made up every assignment and test that I missed and was able to maintain my GPA although I’m still recovering and in physical therapy.
As a graphic design major with a concentration in user experience at North Carolina A&T State University, I see art as a bridge between people and possibilities. Art has always been a profound passion of mine, serving as a powerful means of expression and connection with the world around me. From a young age, I found joy in creating art, whether through painting, drawing, or sculpting. As I grew older, my passion for the arts deepened, and I began to see its potential to inspire, provoke thought, and evoke emotions in others.
One of the primary ways I intend to use my career in art to inspire others is by creating work that people will find meaningful on a deep and personal level. I believe that art has the power to rise above language and cultural barriers that can unite us all. Through my art, I hope to spark wonder and curiosity in viewers, clients, etc, encouraging them to see the world in new and unexpected ways.
Throughout my academic journey, I have actively sought opportunities to sharpen my skills and gain real-world experience. For example, I have taken on freelance projects to gain experience. These experiences have not only helped me improve my design skills but have also given me a glimpse into the professional world of graphic design.
I aim to use my art to increase awareness about important social and environmental issues. I believe that artists have a unique ability to shine a light on pressing issues and provoke meaningful conversations, and I hope to use my art as a tool.
I believe that art has the power to stir up a wide range of emotions, such as joy, sadness, anger, worries, etc. By creating art that opens up these emotions, I hope to create a space for reflection, prompting viewers to consider their own thoughts, feelings, and experiences.
In my vision of a better world, art plays a central role in fostering empathy, understanding, and connection among people from diverse backgrounds. I believe that art has the power to break down barriers and build bridges between individuals and communities. Through my art, I hope to contribute to this vision by creating work that promotes dialogue, fosters empathy, and encourages connection.
I believe that art has the power to create a better world by sparking wonder, increasing awareness, and fostering empathy and understanding. Through my career in art, I hope to inspire others and contribute to a more compassionate, connected, and enlightened world. Art is not just a hobby or a future career for me; it is a primary part of who I am. Art is my soul's language, a way to express the beauty and complexity of life.
Despite my passion and dedication, I recognize that financial assistance is crucial to achieving my goals. My family faces financial challenges and scholarships would ease the financial burden on my family and allow me to focus more on my studies and development.

My name is Ryan Rainey, and I’m originally from Atlanta, GA. I began my freshman year at North Carolina A&T State University in August 2024, which was a lifelong dream of mine. A&T is about carrying forward a legacy of excellence, resilience, and empowerment. A&T is a place that showcases where history meets ambition on so many levels! Those that came before many of us serve as a constant reminder that we stand on the shoulders of some of the most fearless GIANTS. From the Greensboro Four, who ignited the sit-in movement, to astronaut Ronald McNair, who reached for the stars, Jesse Jackson, who fought for equality and fairness, and so many more! For me, being an Aggie means embracing the responsibility to rise, to break barriers, and to become a force for positive change in my community.
From the moment I stepped onto campus during a visit in January 2024, I felt a sense of belonging and knew this was going to be my new home. I cannot explain the feeling that I had, as well as my parents had. It was undeniable. I saw a strong support system from the staff for their students, student camaraderie that was positive, and heard inspiring stories of alumni who have shaped industries.
Leaving home, 5-hours away, was one of the most scariest times of my life. In this short time, one of the most valuable lessons I have learned at A&T is the importance of accountability. A&T instills in us that we are future business owners, engineers, educators, and creators. We are expected to take ownership of our growth, to hold ourselves to high standards, and to uplift those around us. A&T also instills in us a sense of duty to succeed individually, but to pave the way for those who will follow.
Another defining aspect of my experience at A&T has been the emphasis on Black excellence. This university celebrates the uniqueness of its students while fostering a collective strength that is unmatched. It has taught me that my identity is not a limitation but a superpower. The lessons I have learned about resilience, about embracing my authenticity, and about turning obstacles into opportunities will guide me long after graduation.
As I move forward, I plan to carry these values into everything I do. I will give back to my community, mentor the next generation of students, and create spaces where young African Americans can thrive. My goal is to use my education to open doors not just for myself, but for those who come after me. I aspire to make an impact in my field of graphic design, using the knowledge and experiences I have gained at A&T to push for innovation and progress. I believe we all have so much to give to the world of design on many levels that can be through storytelling, branding, user experience, or visual communication. Design has the power to shape culture, amplify voices, and challenge perceptions. As a designer, I want to create work that not only inspires but also empowers underrepresented communities, ensuring that our narratives are seen, heard, and valued.
Ultimately, being an Aggie means understanding that my success is not just my own. It is a continuation of the dreams of those who came before me and a stepping stone for those who will come next. I am proud to be part of this legacy, and I am committed to carrying it forward with purpose, integrity, and passion.
