My life goals revolve around making a meaningful impact, whether it's through journalism or psychology. I'm drawn to these fields because they offer avenues to help people, whether by improving mental health or fostering global awareness. I'm particularly passionate about journalism, inspired by figures like Christiane Amanpour, whose fearless reporting has shaped global perspectives.
One of my most fulfilling experiences has been joining the Depolar Express Project, an independent initiative run by teens like myself. Through this project, I've found an outlet to amplify important global issues. From covering Georgia Meloni's election in Italy to shedding light on the Sahara Conflict in Morocco and the human rights concerns surrounding the World Cup in Qatar, I've been deeply engaged in sharing stories that matter.
My innate global awareness and unwavering desire to make a positive difference in people's lives set me apart as a candidate. Whether it's through shedding light on pressing issues or advocating for mental health awareness, I'm committed to utilizing my skills and passion to contribute meaningfully to the world.

When I watched my first Manchester United game at age five, I was captivated. Soccer became more than just a sport; it became a way of life. However, as a young girl growing up in the United States, soccer was also a battleground. From the bullying I faced as a child to the unequal treatment I received in high school, soccer challenged me in ways I never anticipated. Yet, through these struggles, I discovered my strength, determination, and passion.
My early days in soccer were marked by innocence—I showed up in sparkly cardigans and poofy dresses, ill-prepared for the game ahead. Looking back now, I can laugh, but the ridicule from peers was painful. I faced verbal and occasional physical bullying simply for wanting to play the sport I loved. These experiences fueled my desire to prove myself. Despite lacking the right gear or club experience, I found joy in soccer and resolved not to let others' opinions hinder my passion.
As I entered high school, challenges intensified. My teammates, most of whom had the advantage of playing club soccer, were far ahead of me in skill and experience. My coaches initially overlooked me, assuming my foundation wasn't as strong as theirs. The dynamics with my teammates were also fraught with inequality, as I was expected to carry all the gear after practice while my club-playing teammates were exempt. Nevertheless, I pushed forward, believing that my love for the game and work ethic would help me bridge the gap.
My breakthrough came during my junior year when I excelled, particularly as a defender. I played with an intensity that caught my coaches' attention, and for the first time, they recognized my potential. Overcoming obstacles became the focus; an opposing player hurled a racial slur at me during one game after I played exceptionally well. As a Black woman in a predominantly white area, I have encountered discrimination from referees and opponents. Instead of allowing that moment to defeat me, I channeled it into my performance, realizing that the game was about resilience, overcoming prejudice, and asserting my worth.
Soccer has taught me more than just its technical aspects. It has instilled in me a belief that perseverance and passion can overcome any barrier. Each challenge I've faced, from bullying to racial prejudice, has deepened my love for the game and my understanding of its power. Soccer has shown me that no matter where you start, you can rise to the top with enough determination.
This scholarship would help me pursue my education without financial strain. While soccer is vital, I'm also passionate about journalism and international relations. I aspire to use my voice to tell meaningful stories and amplify the experiences of those often overlooked. Financial support from this scholarship would enable me to focus on my academic and career goals, further my education, and equip me to create change.
Nasser Seconi's legacy of resilience, passion, and helping others inspires me to face every challenge with determination. Like Nasser, I have faced obstacles that could have hindered my growth, but I have chosen to rise above them. Soccer has taught me the importance of pushing through adversity and using every experience to improve myself. This scholarship would support my academic journey, allowing me to pursue my passions in journalism and international relations while honoring Nasser's legacy by helping others. I am committed to persevering through challenges and positively impacting the world just as he did.

Pursuing Passion: Bridging Gaps in Sports Journalism
As a young girl, I fell in love with soccer. From the age of four, kicking a ball around with the neighborhood boys was my joy and my solace. However, it wasn't until I stumbled upon Alex Morgan's book in second grade that I truly understood the depth of my passion. Her words ignited a fire within me, and from that moment on, soccer wasn't just a game—it was a part of my identity.
Growing up, I faced obstacles in pursuing my passion. There was a glaring lack of access to female leagues and recreational classes in my community. Until I turned ten, I could only play with boys, but even then, my love for the sport never wavered. It was during these early years that I realized the power of representation and the importance of advocating for equality in sports.
Around the age of thirteen, my interest in sports journalism blossomed. It became a medium through which I could articulate the excitement and joy that soccer brought me. However, as I delved deeper into the field, I became acutely aware of the disparities plaguing women's sports. The stark contrast in pay, media coverage, and respect between male and female athletes troubled me deeply.
Despite my passion for soccer, I felt compelled to address these inequalities. At fifteen, I seized an opportunity to join the Depolar Express Project, a group focused on discussing global issues. While our primary goal was broader in scope, I saw it as a platform to shed light on the challenges faced by women in sports. Through my involvement, I had the privilege of covering human rights issues surrounding the World Cup in Qatar and the controversy between Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese.
However, my journey doesn't end there. I aspire to make a lasting impact in the realm of sports journalism by advocating for gender equality and amplifying the voices of marginalized athletes. This scholarship would serve as a stepping stone towards realizing my goals.
Firstly, it would provide me with the financial support necessary to pursue higher education in journalism. Armed with the knowledge and skills gained from a degree program, I aim to become a prominent voice in the sports journalism community.
Secondly, the scholarship would afford me opportunities for networking and professional development. By connecting with industry professionals and participating in internships, I can gain invaluable experience and insights into the field.
Moreover, this scholarship would empower me to attend conferences and workshops focused on gender equality in sports. By engaging in these discussions and learning from experts in the field, I can refine my advocacy efforts and contribute meaningfully to the cause.
In conclusion, my passion for soccer ignited my journey in sports journalism, driving me to address the disparities faced by women in sports. Through the Depolar Express Project, I found a platform to amplify these issues, but I aspire to do more. With the support of this scholarship, I am confident that I can make a positive impact on the world by advocating for gender equality in sports journalism and beyond.
Star Farm Scholarship for LGBTQ+ Students
I found solace and courage in the LGBTQ+ community during my adolescence as I navigated the complexities of identity. At the age of twelve, I mustered the courage to come out as bisexual to my family but was instead met with disbelief and rejection, particularly from my mother, who accused me of acting out of spite. This initial rejection was a stark reminder of the deep-seated stigma surrounding LGBTQ+ identities, especially within immigrant communities such as mine, hailing from Guyana, where being gay is still punishable by death.
Despite the lack of support at home, my best friend was a beacon of acceptance who stood by me unwaveringly when I feared being cast aside from my family. Their unwavering support became my lifeline, proving that chosen families can provide the support biological families may fail to offer.
My journey in the LGBTQ+ community has shaped my identity and fueled my passion to become a support system for others facing similar challenges. Witnessing firsthand the detrimental effects of rejection and discrimination, I am committed to creating safe spaces and offering unconditional support to individuals navigating their own identities and facing familial or societal backlash.
This desire to give back fuels my aspiration to pursue a degree in psychology. Through studying psychology, I aim to gain a deeper understanding of the human mind and behavior, specifically focusing on LGBTQ+ mental health. By acquiring the necessary knowledge and skills, I aspire to become a therapist specializing in LGBTQ+ issues, providing culturally sensitive therapy, and advocating for the mental well-being of marginalized communities.
However, pursuing higher education comes with financial burdens, particularly for individuals like myself from underserved communities. As an aspiring psychologist, I recognize the importance of obtaining a quality education to make a positive impact in the LGBTQ+ community. Hence, receiving this scholarship would alleviate the financial stress associated with pursuing my academic aspirations, allowing me to focus entirely on my studies and extracurricular activities to support and uplift marginalized communities.
My journey in the LGBTQ+ community has been one of resilience, growth, and a steadfast commitment to advocacy and support. Despite facing rejection and adversity, I have emerged stronger and more determined to create a more inclusive and accepting world. By pursuing a degree in psychology and utilizing the knowledge gained to support marginalized communities, I hope to honor the support I received from my best friend and pay it forward to others in need. This scholarship would not only alleviate my financial burden but also validate my journey and aspirations to create positive change in the world.
