      C's Get Degrees Scholarship
I didn't have a perfect high school career, so I do understand that someone's GPA is absolutely not a true reflection of someone’s character, effort, or potential. I’m glad this scholarship acknowledges that, because I’ve lived through experiences that grades can’t measure. I was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), a rare disorder where the immune system attacks the nerves, which severely impacted both my health and academics. While others were focused on SAT prep and college applications, I was learning to walk again. I missed school, fell behind, and often had to push through fatigue and weakness just to get through the day. GBS made school harder, but it also gave me perspective and a new level of determination. During my stay in the hospital, I learned a lot about myself and started to understand that everything happens for a reason. I learned not to quit when things got harder and to adapt. That experience taught me that success is about more than a GPA or scores received from standardized tests. It’s about resilience, grit, and continuing forward when life doesn’t go as planned. My transcript might not show that, but I know what I’m capable of. That’s why I’m so excited about college, it’s a fresh chance to grow, to prove myself, and to build the future I want. College means opportunity. I’m looking forward to meeting new people, experiencing independence, and being part of a diverse community. I’m especially excited to learn from people with different backgrounds, to challenge myself academically, and to take part in programs that help me become the best version of myself. I know I’ll need to work harder to catch up, but I’m ready. I’ve already been through something that tested my limits, I know I can handle what’s next. One of my biggest goals is to eventually transfer to another college to continue growing. Long-term, I want to major in finance. That dream is personal for me. My family has faced financial struggles, and I’ve seen what it means when people don’t have access to financial knowledge or tools. I want to change that. I want to learn everything I can about how money works, how to grow it, and how to help others do the same. One day, I hope to start my own brokerage not just to make money, but to serve people, especially those from underrepresented or struggling communities. This scholarship would help me move forward with purpose. It would give me more room to focus on school, especially given my family’s financial situation. My parents are working hard, but after losing a major source of income, we’ve had to adjust a lot. I want to relieve some of that burden by succeeding on my own terms, and that starts with doing well in college. I’m not defined by my past challenges, I’m shaped by them. I’m proud of how far I’ve come, and I’m even more excited about where I’m going. Thank you for reading my story and giving students like me a chance at a new beginning.

Being both Jamaican and Peruvian, I proudly carry the legacy of two rich and vibrant cultures. I consider myself a true reflection of both the Caribbean and Latino experience, and my identity is shaped by the strength, resilience, and traditions of my roots. Growing up in Washington, D.C., I was surrounded by different cultures and perspectives, but my household always stayed grounded in where we came from. My heritage has taught me to be proud of my background, to embrace who I am, and to always strive for more, not just for myself but for those around me. From my Jamaican side, I learned the importance of standing tall in the face of adversity. Jamaicans are known for their strength, hustle, and courage, and I see that every day in my family. From my Peruvian side, I’ve inherited a deep respect for history, family, and the power of perseverance. Peru’s rich culture and strong sense of community are values that guide me. Together, these two parts of my identity remind me that I come from people who never give up, no matter the odds. That mindset fuels my passion for going to college. I’ve seen what happens when families don’t have access to financial education or opportunity. I've watched my parents work extremely hard and still struggle to make ends meet. My family came to this country from two different nations, chasing opportunity and a better life. Because of that, we’ve faced real challenges, especially financially. When I was younger, there were times we had to make tough decisions between bills and groceries. It’s been a long road, and those struggles have left a lasting impression on me. I want to go to college not just to create a better future for myself, but to finally lift some of the weight off my family. Getting this scholarship would mean everything, it would allow me to focus on my education and take some real financial pressure off the people who have always sacrificed for me. They gave up so much so that I could have a chance. I want to make sure that sacrifice pays off. That’s why I’m choosing to study finance. I want to learn how money works, how to build wealth, and how to help others do the same. My dream is to one day start my own brokerage firm, where I can give people access to tools, guidance, and opportunities that aren’t always available in underserved communities. I want to empower young people, immigrants, and families of color to invest, save, and build something they can pass down. My Latino and Caribbean heritage is not just part of my identity it’s my fuel. It reminds me that I come from greatness, and it pushes me to aim higher every day. With this scholarship, I’ll be one step closer to building a future where my family doesn’t have to struggle anymore—and where I can help others do the same.
