CATALYSTS Scholarship
Hello, my name is Ryan Jackson, I'm 19 years old and I am currently studying at Tyler Junior College. My major is biology I plan on studying at Tyler Junior College then transferring to the University of Tyler Texas and finishing my major. After I finish my major I plan on taking the DAT test so I can apply for dental school. It has been my dream since high school to become one. I even volunteered at a dental office and I loved it. I can see my future as a dentist and I believe it's the best fit for me. How I will leave a positive impact by working in low-income areas and also volunteering for free cleaning for the homeless. I know people that can't afford dental care and I see where that could lead to other health issues so to prevent those things I must help the poor. I also plan on educating my patients about dental care, I notice that a lot of people don't understand the importance of oral health. I would want to teach them how to properly brush their teeth and teach them the health benefits of brushing their teeth. And teaching them how to stay healthy will lower their cost in the long run, because tooth fillings, extractions, and implants are very expensive without insurance. Poverty/low income is very damaging to them because in the USA everything is very expensive without insurance and even with it medical costs are still expensive. This war on poor people is just classism because these policies are saying if you can not afford health care you do not deserve to be treated. This is why I need to work in poorer areas because they need the most help and as a future doctor, I must help the people that are in most need. But in the meanwhile, before I am a dentist I'm helping people by educating them on dental hygiene. I tell my friends, family, and even strangers if we are talking about health-related things. I plan on volunteering in the summer at a dentist's office and helping that way as well. And I hope to learn more about dental hygiene and how to better help the poor through the doctors I am learning under because they have experience and may have better ideas than me so I would love to adopt their knowledge to better help the communities that need help the most.
