As a first-time international college student from a small village in Ecuador, coming to the University of Memphis to pursue a degree in computer science was both exciting and daunting. English was not my first language, and although I had studied it for many years, speaking and understanding it fluently was still a challenge. I remember feeling overwhelmed and frustrated during my first few weeks at the university. It was difficult to keep up with lectures and participate in class discussions, and I often felt lost and left out. Despite these challenges, I refused to let them hold me back. I had worked too hard and come too far to give up now. I was determined to succeed and make the most of this opportunity. So, I "turned it up to 11" and did everything I could to improve my language skills. I signed up for English language tutoring and spent countless hours practicing and studying. I also sought out opportunities to engage with native English speakers and immerse myself in the language as much as possible. It wasn't easy, and there were many times when I wanted to give up. But I kept pushing myself and reminding myself of my goals and the reasons why I was here. Through sheer determination and hard work, my efforts paid off. My language skills improved significantly, and I began to feel more confident and capable in class. I even started to excel in my studies, and I was eventually able to earn a spot on the Dean's List. But the biggest lesson I learned from this experience was the importance of perseverance and resilience. I had always been a hard worker, but facing this challenge made me realize that I was capable of much more than I had ever imagined. I learned that no matter how difficult a situation may seem, with enough determination and hard work, it is always possible to overcome it and achieve success. What made me pursue a degree in Computer Science was the puzzle solving aspect that I really can’t get bored because there’s always a new challenge looking to be solve. I hate monotony and I cannot envision myself working a 9-5 and not doing anything new. Being at the forefront of technology is also a huge plus because you know the positive impact you can leave with your work to future generations. I'm also a very competitive person, in my spare time I like to do sports or go to the gym, and I know that this field has a very competitive enviroment and only the very talented can make it to the top industries.
