My name is Rene Santos, and I was raised in Altadena, California. Growing up as a Hispanic, first-generation college student in a single-parent household taught me resilience, sacrifice, and the importance of pursuing opportunities for both myself and my family. At thirteen, my life changed when I was diagnosed with lupus, a chronic autoimmune disease that disproportionately affects Hispanic and African American communities. Learning to manage a serious illness at a young age required discipline, self-advocacy, and mental strength. It also opened my eyes to the healthcare disparities many patients face, especially in underserved communities. These experiences fueled my passion for medicine. I earned my bachelor’s degree in Health Science and will be attending Charles R. Drew University in August 2026. My goal is to become a Physician Assistant and provide compassionate, culturally competent care, particularly for patients living with chronic and autoimmune conditions. Outside of academics, I am passionate about basketball, working out, and staying active, as well as being involved in my church, which has been a source of guidance and support. My life goal is to use my education, lived experience, and dedication to advocacy to reduce healthcare disparities and ensure patients feel heard, supported, and empowered.

PAC: Diversity Matters Scholarship
I believe an impactful Physician Assistant is someone who combines medical knowledge with compassion, resilience, and advocacy. A great PA listens carefully, treats patients as whole people rather than just conditions, and builds trust through empathy and understanding. They adapt to challenges, maintain focus under pressure, and work tirelessly to improve patients’ lives. Cultural awareness is also essential because an impactful PA recognizes that each patient’s background, values, and experiences shape how they receive care. Advocacy completes this work by standing up for patients, guiding them through complex healthcare systems, and ensuring they have the support they need to thrive. These are the qualities I strive to embody every day. My name is Rene Santos, and I was raised in Altadena, California. Growing up in a single-parent household as a Hispanic first-generation college student taught me resilience, determination, and the importance of creating opportunities not just for myself but for my family and community. From an early age, I understood that success is not only personal. It comes from lifting others up and using what you have been given to make a difference. At thirteen, my life changed when I was diagnosed with lupus, a chronic autoimmune disease that disproportionately affects Hispanic and African American communities. Facing this diagnosis as a teenager was challenging in ways I could never have imagined. I had to advocate for myself, manage treatments, and navigate the healthcare system. These experiences taught me patience, empathy, and the ability to persevere through adversity. They also gave me firsthand insight into the challenges many patients face, especially those with limited access to care or who feel unheard. These personal challenges inspired my passion for medicine and my goal of becoming a Physician Assistant. I earned my bachelor’s degree in health science and will be attending Charles R. Drew University in August 2026. I want to serve underserved communities by providing care that is medically excellent, compassionate, culturally sensitive, and attentive to each patient’s unique circumstances. I hope to help patients who, like me, have faced chronic illness and healthcare inequities, giving them support, understanding, and hope. Outside of academics, I am passionate about basketball, working out, and staying active. I am also involved in my church, which has been a source of guidance, strength, and community throughout my life. These activities have taught me teamwork, discipline, and balance. These are lessons that I carry into my studies and will carry into my future career as a PA. Ultimately, I aim to use my experiences, education, and dedication to advocacy to reduce healthcare disparities, ensure patients feel heard and respected, and provide care that genuinely improves lives. Being an impactful PA means more than treating illnesses. It means listening, understanding, and empowering every patient who walks through the door.
