Hello!
My name is Roselyn, I am currently enrolled as a freshmen in Cal Poly Pomona! The reason why I am here on this platform is because my mother and I have lived alone together for all my life. Recently, our house has been slowly leaving our grasp as the owners prepare to sell, I’m helping her in all I can to give her the support we need through what I make now, but I still want to prioritize and succeed in college by allowing myself to reserve money for college and supporting us so we can live in the home we made all our memories in. Thank you!

I’m sorry I don’t know how to help you and that I don’t know what to tell you, you have to do this by yourself and I know it’s hard but I know you can do it.
This is what my mother always says, whenever she sees my doubts in my watering eyes, my trembling hands. I never held it against my mom, for not knowing how to provide money for me or never getting close to guiding me. However, she offers me something that not all people can say they have which is her unwavering support.
In my years, I’ve trudged through hard losses, failures, and the worst of all, fear and doubt. My mother, knowing these all too well has been my number one one fan. My mother is my inspiration and everything that motivates me. Here’s how I see it: if I manage to succeed despite all my odds stacked against me, I can show her that I just need her support to succeed, no more and no less, that after everything, I will always have done it for her, and no matter what I will always find a way to provide for myself so eventually I can provide for us.
Currently, I am a Biology major studying for a bachelors in science at California Polytechnic Pomona.
My biggest adversity, yet my greatest gift, is being born into a family as a first-generation. My mother having grown up in rural Mexico, has little to no way to guide me into this new path of success. She tells me often, “Si puedes hacerlo, pero nomas necesitas echarle ganas, porque yo no pude.” You can do it, you just need to put effort, because I couldn’t.
The disadvantages that come with no guidance have been hard to overcome even now. College is the “real thing”, where some mistakes can be costly. And where most mistakes can pull you from reaching your best potential. Of course, there are counselors and others that have gone through similar paths that are available to mostly everyone.
However, what I have discovered is this: without guidance, I have grown to be more independent and motivated to prepare for everything. Without financial assistance, I have been disciplined in getting a job and establishing my own small florist business. Without instructions, I have been exposed to an unpaved road where I can decide what I will do and how high it will take me. Moreover, my upbringing has given me more than enough love, to pour into my goals and passions, so I can prosper from small hurdles, and so I can share it with people that need the most important thing to succeed— support.
This scholarship would go towards me and my mothers future, I will always work just as hard, but this scholarship would allow me to put one worry aside and put my full focus in a secure school environment. Where money, is the last thing on our minds.
