Hi, my name is Roselyn Disla. I was born in Bayamon, Puerto Rico, and am from Dominican Republic parents. I embarked on my educational journey at Antillean Adventist University in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, with a deep-seated desire to study nursing. Unfortunately, I faced a profound personal tragedy when my little sister (14 years old) passed away on October 6, 2022, leaving my family and me devastated. Amid grief, I continued my studies and worked during the summer as a literature evangelist (my passion).
Since 2019, I have been actively engaged in the colporteur ministry, except during the challenging times brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. Each summer has presented me with diverse and enlightening experiences, but I finally comprehended God's purpose for my life this past summer. My calling is to become a Medical Missionary in Africa; I want to help sick children of all ages.

Jim Maxwell Memorial Scholarship
The Jim Maxwell Memorial Scholarship is deeply meaningful to me because it represents the values that have shaped my life: faith, perseverance, service, and a commitment to uplifting others. As a Seventh-day Adventist nursing student, my journey toward higher education has required sacrifice, resilience, and unwavering trust in God. Through every challenge and milestone, my faith has remained the foundation that keeps me grounded and moving forward.
I was raised with the understanding that faith is not limited to worship, but reflected in how we live, serve, and care for others. My Adventist upbringing emphasized holistic health; caring for the body, mind, and spirit, which inspired my desire to pursue nursing. While navigating academic responsibilities and financial limitations, there were moments when the pressure felt overwhelming. During those times, prayer, scripture, and the support of my church community reminded me that my purpose was greater than my circumstances and gave me the strength to continue.
My faith has played a central role in my academic and personal growth. It has taught me discipline, resilience, and trust in God’s timing. When obstacles arose, I learned to respond with perseverance rather than fear, believing that God would guide my steps. Each achievement strengthened my confidence and reaffirmed that faith and determination can lead to meaningful success.
In 2020, I participated in a medical missionary program that deeply influenced my perspective on healthcare. Through this experience, I learned practical skills such as providing hot and cold therapies, receiving education on natural remedies and lifestyle changes, and participating in agricultural work by caring for plants. These experiences reinforced my belief in preventive care and compassionate service. I also participated in literature evangelism, sharing faith and health-based resources with individuals and families, which strengthened my ability to connect with others on a personal level.
Looking ahead, I plan to continue using my faith as a guiding force throughout my nursing career. My long-term goal is to serve as a medical missionary, whether locally or globally, meeting people where they are and providing care that reflects empathy, dignity, and hope. I feel especially called to work with children and underserved communities, believing that early education and compassionate care can create lasting change.
The Jim Maxwell Memorial Scholarship represents more than financial support; it is an investment in students who are striving to lead with faith and purpose. Receiving this scholarship would allow me to focus more fully on my education while continuing to serve others. I am committed to honoring Jim Maxwell’s legacy by living out my faith, serving wholeheartedly, and using my education to make a meaningful impact.
