When I visited Haiti back when I was in the 5th grade, my family’s homeland, I saw children struggling even greater than those back at home. Seeing children my own age in Haiti struggle with preventable illnesses, limited access to doctors, and lack of basic resources left me with a sense of empathy. Growing up in a low-income household gave me the mindset that I had it bad, but seeing the children in Haiti made me come to a realization that I could have it worse. Although my family and I were struggling, I still had access to basic resources, education, and healthcare. I had enough clothes and food, which many children in Haiti lack. Every child deserves care, love, support, and an opportunity to live a free and healthy childhood, so seeing this left me devastated.
Healthcare is one of the most important aspects in a child’s life. It provides children with an opportunity to grow, learn, and thrive within their childhood. Seeing children receive healthcare firsthand being provided makes me come to the realization that I can make a difference. This inspires me and gives me hope to start my journey towards becoming a pediatrician. I wish to see children strive healthily and happily, putting a smile on a child’s face and providing comfort, reassurance, and support to both them and their families so they’re aware that no matter the challenge or circumstance, they are not alone. To me, pediatrics is about empowering children to overcome any struggles surrounding their ability to thrive. I wish to empower children and families to overcome the struggles that stand in their way between their ability to thrive. Growing up in the unfortunate side of America, the walls of my childhood neighborhood and the walls of the villages in Haiti were different, yet both were fragile. My goal is to strengthen those walls for children and their families and change the future for the next generation.
Witnessing struggling circumstances in both places has shown me that struggle can limit their opportunities without the right care and guidance. That realization has given me hope and determination to pursue the study of medicine. I want to be a source of comfort, reassurance, and hope for families who feel overwhelmed by challenges they cannot face alone; this is what inspires me. I believe this scholarship will help me achieve my goal because I am greatly dedicated and passionate about my goal, and no matter what, I am determined to achieve it. To be honest, it took me a while to settle on what I want to do after high school, and I was honestly struggling deciding what career would be best for me. That’s until I asked myself what my desires are. My desires are to change lives for the better and make the world a better place. Studying medicine may sound like it’s not enough, but it’s not about what’s enough, it’s about the risk you are willing to take. So if studying medicine can help in any way to improve this world, then I am willing to take that risk no matter what circumstances or challenges are in my way.

It was seven in the morning, and I was walking down my street on my way to the bus stop, I glanced to my right and I was awakened when I saw three police officers arresting one of my classmates. I was consumed by curiosity as I could not help but wonder, “What could he possibly have done for him to become a criminal?” After all, we were only in the fourth grade. I watched in disbelief as the officers fought to restrain him, finally managing to get him tackled to the ground before placing him in handcuffs. The scene left me distraught, and I could not help but focus on the circumstances. His life had barely begun, and he was already soon to be facing conviction. It made me realize that anyone can face consequences no matter the age and why I won’t make my environment determine who I am.
Starting from the age of three, moving to Orlando Florida I grew up in a low-income black neighborhood, people would describe it as “ghetto” “hood,” or even “the trenches.” Me and my family did not have much living there. Circumstances were even worse considering both my parents were immigrants. My parents were not familiar with life in America, so they had to adapt and navigate a new culture while raising us. My parents were waking up at three in the morning to go to work, they were working hard to provide for me and my three siblings. Sometimes, they would have to skip meals so we could be full for the night. I remember having to boil water to bathe because my parents would sometimes be late on the water bill. Some years, we did not get to celebrate Thanksgiving because we simply could not afford it, but even then, my parents still did the best they could to make sure we at least had a hot meal. We relied on food donations, which included canned goods, turkey, bread, and microwave meals. My school also provided snack bags every Friday which thankfully helped me, and my siblings get through the day. Going through this allowed me to understand that not everything is handed to people and that it must be worked hard for.
Then again, poverty was not the only problem that we faced in that environment. Growing up in the “hood” held multiple, shootings, killings, robberies, drugs, etc. I remember regularly hearing stories in my neighborhood of killings and murders. I recall one story of how one victim was someone’s grandmother. It was scary to even walk down to the corner store because one never knew if they were gonna be the next victim. Although the environment was different, it still taught me life lessons. Being in that environment taught me to be aware of my surroundings and that tomorrow is not guaranteed. It also taught me to be grateful for the people I love.
Although these events may seem horrific, I’m grateful for going through that experience. I believe it made me a great and stronger person and it prepared me for the next challenges to come my way. Going through these events I developed responsibility and a passion of caring for others.
Even after all events I am not ashamed of where I grew because it honestly made me grow into who I am today.
