WCEJ Thornton Foundation Music & Art Scholarship

At a young age, I found my voice through playing the violin. Growing up in a low-income family, my single-mother made many sacrifices to finance training in my creative passion. Still, I often had to turn down many opportunities to study alongside my peers due to my family’s limited means. In my own trailblazing, I found myself volunteering to play summer music for local worship services. I quickly learned what an amazing and important gift music is. Witnessing congregation members’ mood transform from stress into relaxation, fascination, and inspiration, I knew I was providing something my community needed. In fact, many I met had never attended a classical music concert or heard a live performance on the violin before. There are many talents and passions that are silenced simply due to the high cost of music instruments, training, and concert tickets. My dream is to create a non-profit classical training program for underprivileged youth to study and perform for their communities without financial barriers. In a world that is increasingly divided and turning inwards, my passion is to make this healing and transformative gift accessible to all.

Living in a rural town, my first exposure to classical music was listening to the radio in my mom’s car. I showed an early affinity for music. When Sunday service finished, my six-year-old self would hightail it to the church piano, perhaps imitating what I heard on the radio. As the only musician in my family, I sang my own made-up songs and took violin and trumpet lessons. I taught myself cello, even clarinet. I’m sure my mom was puzzled, but she made every effort to support my creative desires. Growing up in a low-income, single-mother family, I have struggled to afford training, chamber music study, and a quality instrument. The majority of my musical peers have two parents and seemingly no financial constraints. Now I understand that the challenges I’ve faced have been the catalyst for my development into the versatile, diligent, and impassioned violinist I am today. My formal studies began at Baltimore School for the Arts, where I managed a daily four-hour commute, extended school days, limited practice hours, and rigorous training. Under the mentorship of Baltimore Symphony violinist Ivan Stefanovic, I excelled in chamber and ensemble performance. High school honors included an invitation to study at the Peabody Preparatory Chamber Program under Daniel Levitov, being awarded the Armstrong Honors Recital, serving as concertmaster of the BSA orchestra, and earning a scholarship to study with eminent violinist Lynn Chang at Boston Conservatory. In recognition of my self-motivation and commitment to artistry, I was awarded the Suzan B. Katzenberg Scholarship—concluding my studies at BSA. Despite the challenge of working while studying at Boston Conservatory, I have maintained a 4.0 GPA. In 2024, my dedication was awarded with the Richard Ortner Thrive Scholarship. Large ensemble honors have included serving as concertmaster of the Berklee Film Scoring Studio Orchestra (recording with film-score composer and conductor Alan Silvestri), serving as concertmaster of Boston Conservatory’s production of Mark Adamo’s opera Little Women, and being a member of the Hemenway Strings (which performed for the PBS special “Old Friends” featuring Yo-Yo Ma). Under the guidance of esteemed pianist Michael Lewin, performing with my best friends in The Dante Trio has been the highlight of my musical studies. Unable to afford expensive summer programs, I found myself performing solo Bach for local worship services. As a result, I’ve experienced the deep connections, interesting conversations and the elevation that classical music can generate in communities that normally don’t have exposure. Being in a financial minority has deepened my gratitude and generosity. I might not have otherwise experienced so much kindness and support– the friend who lent me a better violin for high school, my mother’s support and sacrifices, and my current teacher who continually advocates for me. In a world full of hatred and division, music can be a healing and uniting force in service to our communities. Growing up in a low-income, single-mother family in rural Maryland, I gained a unique perspective witnessing the connections, conversations, and elevation that classical music generates in communities that don’t normally have access to classical music. As an aspiring violinist, I have struggled to afford my classical training, summer programs, and tuition. In a round-a-bout way, my financial limitations for summer programs led me to instead perform for my community. Every summer, I perform solo violin pieces by J.S. Bach for local worship services. Speaking with congregants revealed to me the often exclusive nature of classical music performance. In perhaps the only live classical music some had ever experienced, many felt transported away from their troubles. These experiences, along with financial hardship in affording my training, have impassioned me to envision a chamber music program for disadvantaged students, combined with community outreach performances. In chamber music, musicians come together in small groups at the highest level of artistic collaboration. I believe chamber music holds the unique ability to bring together people of diverse backgrounds, experiences, and ideas for the purpose of serving others with their music. My chamber music program will provide young musicians with the opportunity to study classical music at a high level without the financial barriers many like me have faced. Additionally, community performances will serve communities that lack access to live classical concerts - restrictions include high ticket costs, low exposure, and far traveling distances. Within concerts, programming would include performances of living composers’ works. As a voice for their community, living composers connect performers and audiences with the communities they represent. My program will instill a spirit of community service and the uplifting of diverse voices through the sharing of music in the next generation.

I have loved music my entire life. Even at just eleven months old. Once, when my mom put on the classical music station in the car, she looked back to check on me, and to her surprise, I was dancing and banging my hands like I was playing an imaginary piano! I started playing my church piano when I was seven. Then my mother got me an electric keyboard, to which I promptly stuck numbered stickers and began to write short songs in numbered code. I only learned to read music when I turned 8 and had my first violin lesson. Apparently, a violin was cheaper than a grand piano. Regardless, I soon enjoyed playing violin even more than the piano. Within ten years, I went from studying the Suzuki method to performing Dvorak’s violin concerto. During those years, I was accepted by the Baltimore School for the Arts, an arts high school that included the study of music history, literature, and theory in its schedule. The curriculum also included publicly performing in the orchestra, chamber ensembles, solo recitals, and the chorus, and taking private lessons with Baltimore Symphony Orchestra’s violinist, Ivan Stefanovic. It was the pure joy I got out of rehearsing with my peers and performing works of music that hold such soul-moving beauty that made me realize I could not live happily without playing the violin. Every summer, I am invited to perform for several churches in my hometown. There was one Sunday when I remember asking God for a sign if the violin was the right career path for me. After I finished performing, the pastor mentioned my performance in his sermon. He explained that music is a gift that can provide the mental rest we all need. This confirmed my choice. My life's mission is to use my love of music to provide people with joy and rest through music. Performing for me is less about the technical aspects of my performance than it is about providing music that will emotionally move the audience in an engaging or restful way. Although I love the thrill of performing on a stage in a large concert hall, my most fulfilling performances have been for small audiences in my local churches or in a nursing home. It is there that I get to truly make a difference and provide an experience that is many times out of reach. Classical music is a genre that has been increasingly restricted to only those who can afford to attend. Even more so in the educational field, where many are forced to choose a more affordable educational path over their passion for music. I am now studying at the Boston Conservatory at Berklee with violinist and professor Lynn Chang. I plan to finish my Bachelor of Music in Violin Performance, attend graduate school, and consider further postgraduate education. I have loved music my entire life. Even at just eleven months old. Once, when my mom put on the classical music station in the car, she looked back to check on me, and to her surprise, I was dancing and banging my hands like I was playing an imaginary piano! I started playing my church piano when I was seven. Then my mother got me an electric keyboard, to which I promptly stuck numbered stickers and began to write short songs in numbered code. I only learned to read music when I turned 8 and had my first violin lesson. Apparently, a violin was cheaper than a grand piano. Regardless, I soon enjoyed playing violin even more than the piano. Within ten years, I went from studying the Suzuki method to performing Dvorak’s violin concerto. During those years, I was accepted by the Baltimore School for the Arts, an arts high school that included the study of music history, literature, and theory in its schedule. The curriculum also included publicly performing in the orchestra, chamber ensembles, solo recitals, and the chorus, and taking private lessons with Baltimore Symphony Orchestra’s violinist, Ivan Stefanovic. It was the pure joy I got out of rehearsing with my peers and performing works of music that hold such soul-moving beauty that made me realize I could not live happily without playing the violin. Every summer, I am invited to perform for several churches in my hometown. There was one Sunday when I remember asking God for a sign if the violin was the right career path for me. After I finished performing, the pastor mentioned my performance in his sermon. He explained that music is a gift that can provide the mental rest we all need. This confirmed my choice. My life's mission is to use my love of music to provide people with joy and rest through music. Performing for me is less about the technical aspects of my performance than it is about providing music that will emotionally move the audience in an engaging or restful way. Although I love the thrill of performing on a stage in a large concert hall, my most fulfilling performances have been for small audiences in my local churches or in a nursing home. It is there that I get to truly make a difference and provide an experience that is many times out of reach. Classical music is a genre that has been increasingly restricted to only those who can afford to attend. Even more so in the educational field, where many are forced to choose a more affordable educational path over their passion for music. I am now studying at the Boston Conservatory at Berklee with violinist and professor Lynn Chang. I plan to finish my Bachelor of Music in Violin Performance, attend graduate school, and consider further postgraduate education. After my education, I intend to join an orchestra, form a chamber group, and join or create a program that will make classical music training accessible to young people. As the child of a single mother, I have faced struggles with affording such training: the cost of my instrument and its repairs, private lessons, summer programs, and now my college tuition. It is because I understand the extreme costs of classical training and my inspiration drawn from my hard-working and number-one fan, who is my mother, that I am driven to share classical music and its healing benefits. Especially for those who, like me, have struggled to access it.
