January 12, 2010, is a day that remains etched in my memory with haunting clarity. On that day, a devastating earthquake struck Haiti, shaking the ground and destroying everything in its path. I was just seven years old, visiting my best friend’s house when the earth began to tremble. At first, I thought the shaking was just a playful nudge from one of my friends. But as the tremors grew stronger and the houses around us swayed and collapsed, it became clear that something far more terrifying was happening.
Seeing the danger, my best friend’s mother grabbed and carried us to safety. The scene was chaotic and frightening—people trapped under debris, others injured, and the air filled with cries for help. I was overwhelmed by fear and helplessness, unable to do anything to assist those in need. That day, I was profoundly aware of my vulnerability and the limits of my understanding in an emergency.
The helplessness I felt during that earthquake has stayed with me throughout my life. It made me deeply aware of the importance of being prepared and capable in emergencies. I wanted to be someone who could make a difference and help others in their moments of greatest need. This desire to transform my feelings of helplessness into actionable skills led me to choose the healthcare field. Nursing, in particular, represents a path where I can acquire the knowledge and skills needed to provide critical care. A degree in nursing will equip me with a deep understanding of the human body, the ability to respond to medical emergencies, and the competence to offer care and support. These are the tools I need to feel empowered and contribute positively in crisis situations.
Becoming a registered nurse is not just a career choice but a way to fulfill a deep-seated personal goal. It is about turning the trauma I experienced into a source of strength and competence. With a nursing degree, I will be able to assist in emergencies, provide comfort and care to those suffering, and make informed decisions that can save lives. The knowledge I gain will help me react effectively in stressful and critical situations, transforming my childhood fear into professional capability.
However, my aspirations extend beyond simply becoming a registered nurse. I envision a long career where I continue growing, learning, and contributing to healthcare. I aim to specialize in areas where I can make a significant impact, whether that involves working in emergency care, public health, or community health education. Each step of my career will be driven by the desire to use my skills to help others and to prevent or mitigate suffering.
In the future, I also want to be involved in outreach programs that educate communities about health and safety. By sharing knowledge and providing training, I can help others prepare for emergencies and improve their overall health and well-being. This proactive approach to healthcare is something I am passionate about, and it aligns with my goal of making a lasting difference.
