FinalistBio
My name is Serfi-Ann Roberts, and I am a high school senior with a 3.7 GPA and a passion for nursing. As a first-generation college student, I understand the value of hard work, perseverance, and opportunity. I was born in Jamaica and raised with strong values centered around resilience, education, and service to others.
Throughout high school, I have challenged myself academically by maintaining high honors while actively participating in HOSA, Build On, cheerleading, and track. These experiences have shaped me into a disciplined, compassionate, and goal-oriented individual. Being involved in HOSA strengthened my desire to pursue nursing by allowing me to explore healthcare careers and develop leadership skills.
For over a year, I have worked as a server at a retirement home, where I interact daily with elderly residents. This job has deeply influenced my career path. Listening to their stories, assisting with their needs, and witnessing the importance of patience and empathy has confirmed my calling to become a nurse. I want to provide not only medical care, but comfort and dignity to those who need it most.
My goal is to earn my nursing degree and serve diverse communities, especially those that may lack access to quality healthcare. I am determined to use my education to uplift others and honor the sacrifices my family has made to help me succeed.

Finding Purpose in Caregiving
My journey in caregiving began with my clinical experience, and though I have not yet fully entered the field, what I have experienced so far has been profoundly meaningful. From the very first day, I discovered that caregiving is about far more than completing tasks—it is about connecting with people, listening to their stories, and offering a small light in moments that can feel overwhelmingly dark.
During my clinical, I quickly realized that patients often want more than physical care; they want to be seen, heard, and valued. Many of them openly share frustrations about how they are treated, about feeling overlooked or misunderstood. At first, I felt unsure about how to respond, but I soon understood that sometimes, the most important thing I can do is simply listen. Being present, offering empathy, and validating their feelings has allowed me to build trust and form genuine connections. In return, patients express gratitude in ways that are simple yet deeply impactful. They often tell me how much they appreciate having someone to talk to, and even jokingly say they need more people like me in caregiving. Those words remind me why I am pursuing this path.
One of the aspects I enjoy most is lifting their spirits. Sometimes it is through sharing a smile, offering encouragement, or simply being patient as they vent their frustrations. Other times, it is just sitting quietly and letting them speak their hearts. I have seen firsthand how much a kind word, a listening ear, or a gentle presence can improve someone’s day. Witnessing that small difference reinforces for me the importance of compassion and empathy in healthcare—qualities that cannot be taught in a textbook but are essential in caregiving.
Even in this early stage, I have learned lessons that will guide me throughout my career. I have learned that every patient has a story worth hearing, and every interaction is an opportunity to make someone feel valued. I have realized that patience is as important as efficiency, and empathy is as crucial as expertise. Most importantly, I have discovered that caregiving is not only about supporting others—it is also about understanding myself, cultivating resilience, and strengthening the values that define who I am.
These experiences have confirmed my passion for pursuing a career in caregiving. I am motivated not only by a desire to provide physical care, but also by the opportunity to positively impact the emotional well-being of those I serve. I want to be someone who brings comfort, dignity, and hope to patients when they need it most. The connections I have made, even in this short clinical experience, have taught me that small gestures of care can create lasting impact.
Though I am just beginning my professional journey, my clinical experience has shown me that caregiving is more than a job—it is a calling. The patients I have met so far have reminded me why I chose this path: to use empathy, compassion, and dedication to lift others up. I look forward to the real work ahead, ready to continue learning, growing, and making a difference, one patient at a time.

Turning Pain into Purpose
One of the greatest obstacles I have faced in my life has been learning how to remain kind and compassionate in a world that has not always treated me the same way. I have always been a loving person—someone who gives deeply, cares genuinely, and wants to see others happy. However, throughout my life, that kindness has often been met with unfair treatment, emotional neglect, and disappointment. Learning how to navigate that reality without losing myself has been a challenge that has ultimately shaped who I am today.
Growing up, I experienced emotional absence from the people I needed most. Without consistent parental support, I often felt alone, even in spaces where I was surrounded by others. This created a deep sense of loneliness at a young age and forced me to become independent earlier than most. I had to learn how to comfort myself, motivate myself, and keep going even when I felt like I had no one to lean on. At the same time, I continued to give love to others.
As I got older, I began to notice a pattern. I would pour into people—friends, family, and those around me—only to feel overlooked or taken for granted. I was often labeled as “too nice” or “too sensitive,” and there were times when I started to believe that something was wrong with me. This became an emotional obstacle that affected my self-worth. I questioned whether I needed to change who I was in order to be respected.
Overcoming this challenge required deep personal growth. I had to learn that my kindness was not the problem—my lack of boundaries was. I began to understand that being compassionate does not mean allowing others to mistreat you. It means knowing your value and choosing when and where to give your energy. Through this realization, I developed a stronger sense of self-respect and emotional awareness. I learned how to stand up for myself while still remaining true to the caring person I’ve always been.
This obstacle also strengthened my resilience. Instead of allowing my experiences to harden me, I made a conscious decision to grow from them. I chose to believe that pain can have purpose. Rather than adopting the mindset that “hurt people hurt people,” I began to live by the belief that hurt people can help people. That belief has become a guiding principle in my life.
Because of what I have been through, I have developed a deep sense of empathy for others, especially those who feel unheard, overlooked, or emotionally burdened. I understand what it feels like to struggle internally while appearing strong on the outside. This understanding has directly influenced my decision to pursue a career in nursing. I want to be someone who not only treats patients physically, but also provides emotional support during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives.
Nursing requires compassion, patience, and strength—qualities that I have developed through overcoming my own challenges. My experiences have prepared me to connect with patients on a deeper level, to listen without judgment, and to care with intention. I want to be the person who makes someone feel seen and valued, even in difficult circumstances.
The obstacle of being treated unfairly despite my kindness has not weakened me—it has refined me. It has taught me the importance of balance, self-worth, and perseverance. Most importantly, it has given me a sense of purpose. I am committed to turning my experiences into something meaningful by helping others, and I will carry that purpose with me throughout my journey in nursing and beyond.
