My name is Roberto Casares, and I'm a first-generation Cuban-American student with great aspirations and even more tenacity. I intend to attend the University of North Florida (UNF), my ideal university, and study finance. I'm applying for this scholarship not only because I need money for college, but also because I feel I can have a long-term, beneficial impact on both my community and the world. Growing up in a hardworking immigrant household, I learned the importance of sacrifice and tenacity early on. My parents came to the United States from Cuba in quest of a brighter future. They never got the opportunity to attend college since life obliged them to work and support their families first. Despite this, they never ceased supporting me to pursue my own goals and higher education. They instilled in me the conviction that education is the key to breaking cycles and generating opportunities—not only for myself, but also for future generations. My family's financial position has been difficult, but it has also been a significant motivator. I've always known that if I wanted to attend college, I needed to work hard, apply for scholarships, and stay focused. That drive shaped who I am now. I've managed my scholastic duties while remaining involved in my community, and I'm always willing to help my neighbors—whether it's assisting elderly folks with yard work, tutoring younger children, or simply being someone they can rely on. I've always felt compelled to give back. Finance has always piqued my interest—not only because it provides employment prospects, but also because I regard it as a weapon for empowerment. I want to use my degree to teach others how to manage their money, accumulate wealth, and attain financial freedom. Too many people, particularly in immigrant and marginalized communities, do not obtain the financial education they require to establish solid lives. I would like to modify it. One of my long-term ambitions is to become a financial counselor or planner who specializes in assisting low-income families, immigrants, and young individuals in making sound financial decisions. I intend to host workshops, provide one-on-one assistance, and eventually establish a nonprofit that provides free financial education tools. I've witnessed directly how a lack of financial literacy can lock families in cycles of poverty. I want to be the person who helps people break free from those cycles, just like I am doing now. Attending UNF will provide me with the necessary education, guidance, and skills to realize my objective. I am drawn to UNF not only for its great business curriculum, but also for its principles, which include community engagement, innovation, and academic success. I know that at UNF, I will be surrounded by people who will both challenge and support me as I strive to achieve my goals. Receiving this award would mean more than just financial assistance; it would be proof that others believe in my abilities. It would allow me to concentrate on my studies without constantly worrying about how I would pay for school. Most importantly, it would help me to continue forward with confidence, knowing that I am supported by a community that wants me to succeed. I am determined to use my degree and experience to effect meaningful change. I will work relentlessly to ensure that people have the tools they need to prosper, whether through one-on-one financial coaching or the establishment of a community resource center. This scholarship will help me open a door, and I promise to keep it open for others.

The Cost of a Dream: How Financial Struggles Have Shaped My Life and Future Growing up, I assumed that hard work would be sufficient to achieve my goals. I studied late at night, stayed focused on academics, and seized every opportunity to improve myself. However, as I approached graduation from high school, I knew that dedication alone would not cover the cost of college. Not being able to finance further education has been one of the most difficult difficulties I've faced, and it's had a significant impact on my life, molding not only how I perceive the world, but also who I want to be. My family has always lived from paycheck to paycheck. My parents are Cuban immigrants who arrived in this country with little except a strong work ethic and the desire that their children would have a better life. They were unable to attend college since they had to work early to support their family. They now work long hours in physically tough occupations, not for personal gain, but to support us. Watching them make these sacrifices while knowing that we are still struggling financially has taught me the importance of hard effort and the mental burden that financial insecurity imposes. As college neared, I was both excited and terrified. I realized how restricted my alternatives were—not because of my academic abilities, but because of money. Due to college prices, I have had to decline chances and narrow my options. It's frustrating to think that something so important to my future could be out of reach just because we can't afford it. Without financial aid or scholarships, college may remain a distant dream. This financial barrier has influenced me. It has made me more responsible, resourceful, and determined to achieve. I've taken on part-time jobs, applied for every scholarship I could find, and worked hard in school to be eligible for merit-based financial help. I've learned to advocate for myself, ask for assistance when needed, and maintain focus even when things seem overwhelming. These teachings created my personality and will continue to influence me throughout my life. Not having enough money for education has had an impact on my long-term goals as well. I want to major in an area that will allow me to give back to underprivileged places while also assisting other students in my situation. Whether through education, charitable work, or legislation, I hope to devote my career to increasing access to possibilities for individuals who have been overlooked or left behind. I believe that no one should be forced to give up on their aspirations simply because they cannot afford them. My experience has taught me that while skill and ambition exist in every area, opportunity does not. I wish to help change that. Going to college is more than simply an investment in myself; it is an investment in the future that I want to help build. I want to remember my parents' sacrifices, encourage people in my community, and demonstrate to the next generation that where you start does not have to dictate where you end up. College is about more than just getting a degree; it's about building a life I've worked hard for and doing something worthwhile with it. I'm committed to break the financial cycle, not only for myself, but also for my family and those like us. That is how I intend to transform trouble into strength, and challenge into purpose.

What My Cuban Heritage Means to Me and Why I'm Passionate in Attending College. My Cuban heritage is at the heart of who I am. It connects me to a rich history of strength, endurance, and sacrifice. My parents were born and reared in Cuba, and while they hoped to further their education, reality had other plans for them. They were unable to attend college since they had to work at a young age to support their family. Their sacrifices provided me with opportunities that I would not have otherwise had, and I carry their courage and dedication with me every day. Growing up in a Cuban household, I was constantly exposed to our culture, including music, food, language, and rituals. From the rhythmic sounds of salsa music on weekend mornings to the stories my parents told me about their days in Cuba, I learnt to value the diversity of my background. I also realized how much my parents sacrificed when they left their home to pursue a better life. They encouraged me to be proud of where I came from and to never take my education lightly. My parents were unable to attend college, so they made it their duty to ensure that I could. They consistently reminded me that education is the route to freedom and opportunity. They have worked diligently, often at numerous jobs and late hours, to provide me with the opportunity to achieve. Seeing their determination has inspired me to study harder in school and take my ambitions seriously. I want to go to college for myself and my family. Every accomplishment I gain is a result of their hard work, and attending college would be a chance to recognize their efforts. College means more than just higher education to me. It's a place where I can grow, explore my passions, and get the skills necessary to make a genuine difference in the world. I'm excited about attending college because I believe that education is a strong force for change. I want to study something that will allow me to give back, whether it's through community service, education, healthcare, or any career that benefits those in need. My ambition is to use my degree to help others, particularly those from immigrant families who encounter obstacles similar to those my parents did. My background has taught me that setbacks are not impediments, but rather opportunities for growth. The Cuban mentality is one of resourcefulness, courage, and hope, and I carry it with me into all I do. I'm proud of my heritage, and I hope to carry them with me into the future. By attending college, I wish to set an example for my younger siblings, cousins, and community members, demonstrating that we can achieve our goals regardless of where we come from. Finally, attending college is more than just a personal dream. It's a way to carry on my family's tradition of courage, sacrifice, and love. My Cuban heritage has shaped me into a person who appreciates hard work and perseverance. I am committed to take advantage of the opportunities that have been presented to me and to utilize my education to open doors not only for myself, but also for others.

The Influence of Having a Foreign-Born Parent on My Academic and Career Goals Having a foreign-born parent has profoundly shaped both my academic experience and my future career goals. Growing up in a bilingual household with a parent who moved to this country in search of a better life, I’ve been exposed to different perspectives, cultures, and values that have influenced my approach to learning and my aspirations for the future. My parent’s immigrant experience has not only inspired me to work hard but also shaped my career aspirations, teaching me the importance of perseverance, adaptability, and giving back to the community. One of the most significant impacts of having a foreign-born parent was the emphasis on education. My parent, who didn’t have the same opportunities growing up, constantly reminded me how fortunate I was to be in a position to attend school and pursue higher education. This instilled in me a deep sense of gratitude and responsibility to make the most of my educational opportunities. I learned early on that education wasn’t just about grades or getting into college—it was about securing a future and making a meaningful impact. This mindset has motivated me to excel academically, as I know my achievements reflect not only my efforts but also the sacrifices my parent made to help me succeed. Language barriers also played a role in my academic experience. Growing up in a household where English was not the first language, I often served as an interpreter for my parent, helping with everything from filling out forms to navigating important conversations. This responsibility taught me the value of communication and the importance of helping others in need. It also shaped my approach to academics, as I learned to be patient and persistent when tackling new concepts, understanding that learning is a process, and that sometimes it takes time and effort to fully grasp new ideas. This experience has made me more empathetic and understanding of others who may be facing challenges in their own education. The influence of my foreign-born parent has also impacted my career goals. Seeing how my parent worked hard to create a better life for our family despite the challenges they faced has inspired me to pursue a career where I can help others. I am passionate about financial advising, as I believe that access to sound financial advice can empower people, especially those from underrepresented backgrounds, to take control of their financial futures. I want to use my skills to help individuals make informed decisions about managing their money, securing their futures, and overcoming financial challenges, just as my parent did. In addition, my parent’s experience as an immigrant has shown me the importance of community support and social responsibility. I understand that not everyone has the same opportunities, and I want to contribute to creating a more inclusive society. By helping people achieve financial stability, I hope to give back to the community that welcomed my family and supported us along the way. In conclusion, having a foreign-born parent has significantly influenced my academic journey and career goals. The values of hard work, perseverance, and community service have shaped my approach to learning and my desire to help others in meaningful ways. I am determined to use my education and career to make a positive impact on those who need it most, just as my parent’s sacrifices and resilience have inspired me to do.

I want to provide others with the tools to create financial security and peace of mind. I’ve also realized that financial literacy is essential for long-term success. I want to ensure I don’t repeat past mistakes and build a stable financial foundation for myself. Pursuing My Dreams and Giving Back to My Community My name is Roberto Casares, and I am a high school student with a passion for business and helping others. As the first person in my family to attend college, I’m excited to pursue my dream of becoming a financial advisor at the University of North Florida. Alongside my academic and professional goals, I’m deeply committed to giving back to my community, especially to older adults who need support. I believe in the power of service, and I’m determined to use my experiences to make a positive impact on both my family and the wider community. At school, I’m actively involved in Key Club and Trio, both of which have shaped my growth as a leader and volunteer. Key Club has given me the chance to contribute to local service projects, such as organizing fundraising events and helping with community clean-ups. Through these experiences, I’ve learned that even small acts of service can create meaningful change. Trio has provided mentorship and support to help me navigate my academic path, which has been invaluable as I prepare for college. These extracurriculars have instilled in me a sense of responsibility to give back and motivated me to work hard to create opportunities for others. After high school, I plan to attend the University of North Florida, where I will pursue a degree in business with a focus on financial advising. I have always been interested in how financial decisions can shape people’s futures, and I’m eager to help others make informed choices about saving, investing, and planning for their financial well-being. Becoming a financial advisor will allow me to support individuals and families in achieving their financial goals, and I’m determined to make a positive difference in people’s lives. I hope to use my education and experiences to guide others toward financial stability, ensuring they feel more confident in their decisions. Alongside my career aspirations, I am passionate about giving back to my community. If I could start my own charity, it would focus on supporting older adults who are in need of assistance. Many elderly people face challenges with mobility, health, or daily tasks, and often don’t have the resources or support they need. My charity’s mission would be to offer services like transportation, meal delivery, and companionship. Volunteers would help with errands, provide company to reduce isolation, assist with light household chores, and offer help with scheduling medical appointments. The goal would be to create a network of volunteers who can improve the lives of older adults, ensuring they feel supported and valued by their community. In conclusion, I am excited to pursue my dreams of becoming a financial advisor while continuing to give back to my family and community. Through my involvement in Key Club and Trio, I’ve learned the importance of service and leadership, which will guide me in my future endeavors. I also hope to start a charity that assists older adults, ensuring they receive the care and support they deserve. By pursuing my career and giving back, I want to make a meaningful impact in the lives of others.

Making a Positive Impact in My Community and Family My name is Roberto Casares, and as the first person in my family to graduate from college, I understand the importance of education, resilience, and the drive to create a better future for both myself and my community. Growing up in a close-knit family with Hispanic roots, I’ve learned from an early age the value of hard work, compassion, and the importance of supporting one another. These values have shaped my life and continue to guide my actions as I aim to make a positive impact within both my family and the larger community. Being the first in my family to attend and graduate from college is a milestone that not only represents my personal achievement but also reflects the sacrifices and hopes of my family. My parents, immigrants who worked tirelessly to provide for our family, always emphasized the importance of education and perseverance. Their work ethic and dedication motivated me to push through obstacles and challenges, knowing that my success would open doors not only for me but for future generations in our family. I am committed to using my education and experiences to be a role model for my younger siblings and cousins, showing them that with determination, anything is possible. I want to help break the cycle of limited opportunities and demonstrate that education can be a gateway to a brighter future. One of the ways I’ve always worked to give back to my community is by helping my older neighbors and family friends. As a child, I learned from my parents to extend a hand to those who need it, whether it was helping an elderly neighbor with groceries or assisting a family friend with translating documents. Over the years, this tradition of helping others has stayed with me, and it has shaped my sense of responsibility toward my community. As I continue my studies and pursue my career, I plan to keep helping those around me, especially in ways that promote inclusivity and support for those who may not have access to the same resources I’ve had. My Hispanic heritage has also taught me the value of community and the importance of intergenerational relationships. I’ve seen how strong, interconnected families and neighborhoods can create opportunities for growth and solidarity, and I want to carry that legacy forward. I am passionate about helping young people, especially those in underserved communities, understand the power of education and self-determination. Whether through tutoring, mentorship, or simply offering advice, I believe that giving back to others is key to creating positive change. In the future, I hope to engage in community outreach initiatives that focus on educational support, financial literacy, and fostering cultural pride within the Hispanic community. In conclusion, being the first in my family to graduate from college is an honor that motivates me to continue striving for excellence and giving back to those who have supported me. I want to make a positive impact within my family by inspiring my younger relatives to pursue their dreams and by being a resource for them. In my community, I plan to continue the tradition of helping others, especially older neighbors and family friends, and advocate for educational opportunities and cultural pride. By combining my education with the values instilled in me by my heritage, I hope to create a ripple effect of positive change that will extend for generations to come.

Making a Positive Impact Through Financial Advising My name is [Your Name], and I am passionate about empowering individuals and families to take control of their financial futures. I have always believed that financial literacy is one of the most important tools for creating lasting positive change, both personally and in society. As someone who has witnessed firsthand the impact of financial struggles, I am committed to becoming a financial advisor who can guide others toward stability, security, and long-term success. Through my career, I aim to make a meaningful difference by helping others not only understand their finances but also navigate the complexities of financial planning in a way that allows them to achieve their goals. Financial advising is a career that allows me to combine my love for helping others with my interest in numbers, problem-solving, and strategic planning. I plan to approach each client relationship with empathy and dedication, taking the time to listen to their needs and offering personalized advice that sets them up for success. My ultimate goal is to empower people—especially those from underserved communities—to make informed financial decisions that will improve their lives and contribute to a more equitable financial landscape. Whether it's guiding young adults as they start saving for the future or helping families manage debt and invest for retirement, I am eager to be the kind of advisor who makes a lasting positive impact. However, I anticipate several financial obstacles as I pursue my college education and career path. The cost of tuition, textbooks, and living expenses can add up quickly, creating financial pressure that may make it harder to focus on my academic goals. Additionally, securing internships and entry-level positions in financial advising may require working in unpaid or low-paying roles initially. This can be a significant challenge, as balancing part-time work with full-time studies may stretch my finances and my time. To overcome these financial hurdles, I plan to take a proactive approach. I will apply for scholarships, work-study programs, and part-time jobs that are aligned with my career goals to reduce the burden of student loans. I also plan to budget carefully, prioritizing essential expenses and seeking opportunities for financial education to manage my personal finances effectively during this time. By staying disciplined and organized with my finances, I hope to minimize stress and stay focused on my long-term career goals. I am also deeply interested in how financial systems can be made more accessible, particularly for people who have been historically underserved by traditional financial institutions. This passion drives my commitment to not only becoming a financial advisor but also a force for positive change in my community. In conclusion, I am determined to make a positive impact through my career as a financial advisor by helping people understand and manage their finances, ultimately guiding them toward greater financial independence. Despite the financial challenges that may arise during my college education, I am committed to overcoming them through careful planning, persistence, and a focus on my long-term goals. My passion for financial literacy and community service will continue to motivate me to push through obstacles and pursue my vision of creating a more financially inclusive world.

"It is so difficult to keep the mind from wandering when one is sad, and so easy to let it wander when one is happy." — A Little Princess, Frances Hodgson Burnett Essay: The Power of Focus and the Influence of Emotional States In Frances Hodgson Burnett’s A Little Princess, the protagonist, Sara Crewe, experiences a dramatic shift from privilege to hardship. This passage, “It is so difficult to keep the mind from wandering when one is sad, and so easy to let it wander when one is happy,” encapsulates a profound understanding of the human condition, revealing the delicate balance between our emotions and the ability to direct our thoughts. Burnett’s insight speaks to the inherent vulnerability in our emotional states and how they shape our mental focus. At first glance, this quote may seem like a simple observation about how our moods affect our thinking. However, the underlying meaning goes deeper, addressing how the emotional environment we inhabit can either constrain or liberate our mental faculties. The statement reveals that sadness is a state that often pulls us inward, distracting us with worries, anxieties, or a sense of loss, while happiness naturally allows the mind to roam freely, without the same weight of negative emotions. In essence, Burnett points to a paradox of the human experience: when we are most in need of clarity and focus—during moments of sadness or hardship—our minds tend to stray, and yet, in moments of joy, when mental clarity should be more easily attained, we are instead liberated, often allowing ourselves to drift into creative or positive thoughts. Burnett’s reflection on this contrast brings attention to how emotions can hinder or enhance one’s ability to focus. The wandering mind during sadness reveals the difficulty of focusing when our emotional energy is drained or overwhelmed by negative experiences. We may become consumed by our grief, disappointment, or confusion, which clouds our ability to engage productively with the world around us. The challenge of controlling the mind during these times speaks to the nature of human vulnerability; we are at the mercy of our emotions, and when we feel weak or disheartened, it can be challenging to maintain control over our thoughts. Conversely, happiness offers a different dynamic. When Sara, as a character, experiences moments of joy or optimism, her mind can float freely. Happiness tends to uplift the spirit, allowing for mental fluidity, creativity, and expansion of thought. Burnett implies that when we are content, the mind is not weighed down by the heavy burden of emotional struggle and is therefore able to explore more freely. The mind, unburdened by sadness, can embrace opportunities for growth, curiosity, and imagination. In this way, happiness can serve as a bridge to clarity, whereas sadness creates barriers that require conscious effort to overcome. The writer’s intention here is not merely to observe the ways emotions affect mental states but to underscore the importance of self-awareness. In moments of sadness, when the mind wanders and is prone to negative thoughts, the need for conscious effort becomes crucial. By recognizing the influence of emotions on thought processes, we are better equipped to navigate periods of distress. This aligns with Burnett’s larger themes in A Little Princess of resilience, inner strength, and maintaining hope even in adversity. Sara’s journey demonstrates the importance of mental discipline, particularly when external circumstances threaten to undermine her sense of self. Thus, the passage highlights the intricate relationship between emotional states and mental focus. It emphasizes the ease of losing oneself in pleasant thoughts during times of happiness, and the struggle to maintain clarity during moments of sorrow. This duality speaks to the delicate balance one must achieve between acknowledging emotional vulnerability and cultivating inner resilience. Burnett’s words challenge the reader to reflect on their own emotional experiences and how they shape their ability to stay present and focused. It is through understanding this balance that we can learn to cultivate peace and control over our thoughts, no matter the external circumstances.

Overcoming Adversity: Living with Asthma and Frequent Illness Living with asthma and frequent illnesses has been a constant challenge throughout my life, testing both my physical and emotional resilience. Diagnosed with asthma at a young age, I faced regular flare-ups and respiratory infections that kept me from fully participating in school, sports, and social activities. While my peers easily ran track or joined in group games, I often found myself sitting on the sidelines, unable to keep up. This ongoing struggle to stay healthy became a source of frustration and self-doubt, affecting both my academic performance and my sense of belonging. The physical limitations were hard enough to manage, but the emotional toll was equally challenging. Frequently missing school due to illness meant I had to make up for lost work, often feeling behind while my classmates seemed to breeze through assignments and projects. I also found myself withdrawing from social events and extracurricular activities because I feared that my asthma would hold me back or that I would not be able to keep up. It was easy to feel isolated, as it seemed like everyone else was living a normal, active life while I was constantly battling my health. However, I soon realized that the only way to overcome this adversity was to take control of my situation. I began by working closely with my doctors to find the most effective treatment plan for my asthma, which included regular medication, avoiding triggers, and using my inhaler properly. I also made lifestyle changes, such as practicing deep breathing exercises and exercising regularly to build my stamina. By taking these steps, I started to manage my asthma more effectively, and my attacks became less frequent. In addition to managing my health, I also learned the importance of self-advocacy. When I missed school or extracurricular activities, I communicated openly with teachers and coaches about my situation. I made sure to catch up on missed work, and I sought help when I needed it. Over time, I learned that asking for support wasn’t a weakness—it was a strength. This approach allowed me to maintain a sense of balance in my life, even when dealing with my health. Living with asthma taught me invaluable lessons about resilience, perseverance, and the power of self-advocacy. I’ve learned that while adversity is inevitable, it’s how we respond to challenges that defines us. Today, I face life’s obstacles with a stronger sense of determination, knowing that I can overcome whatever comes my way.

The idea of understanding how money worked and using that knowledge to help others manage it intrigued me. Growing up in a blended family with four siblings from different mothers has had a significant impact on my perspective, values, and personal growth. Each of us came from different backgrounds and had unique family experiences, which at times created challenges in understanding each other. However, these challenges taught me important life lessons about diversity, adaptability, and empathy, all of which have shaped my future goals. In a blended family, there are many adjustments to make, from learning to live under one roof with siblings from different walks of life to managing various dynamics between parents. At times, it felt like we were living in separate worlds, each bringing a different set of expectations and experiences. But over time, I learned how to communicate better, empathize with different points of view, and build strong, supportive relationships. These lessons taught me the importance of being open-minded and understanding, which are qualities I now consider crucial in my personal life and any future career. Growing up in a blended family also made me more resilient. The constant adjustments, whether it was to new routines or navigating family conflicts, pushed me to develop patience and flexibility. There were moments of frustration, but I realized that each challenge was an opportunity to grow and build my inner strength. Choosing to pursue higher education is one of the most significant decisions I’ve made, and it represents a chance for personal and academic growth. As a first-generation student, this journey holds even more meaning for me because it reflects not only my desire to achieve my goals but also the responsibility I feel to break barriers for myself and my family. The road to college has come with unique challenges, but it has also taught me resilience and the importance of preparation. From an early age, I was taught by my parents the value of education. Despite not having the opportunity to attend college themselves, they worked hard to create a better life for me. They emphasized the importance of education as a pathway to success and encouraged me to dream big. This support has been my driving force in deciding to pursue higher education. I want to honor their sacrifices and use education to improve my future while making them proud. Being a first-generation student means I don't have the same guidance that other students might have when it comes to navigating the college admissions process. But this reality only motivated me to be proactive and resourceful. One of the first steps I took was to research colleges and their programs, ensuring I understood the different admissions requirements and what schools best matched my academic goals. I also sought guidance from teachers and mentors who helped me navigate the complexities of applying to college, including understanding deadlines, submitting essays, and requesting recommendations. In addition to the college application process, I knew it was important to prepare myself academically. Throughout high school, I focused on strengthening my skills in subjects like math, writing, and critical thinking. I took advanced courses and made sure to seek help when I needed it. I also participated in extracurricular activities such as volunteering and leadership roles, as I understood the importance of a well-rounded profile when applying to colleges. These activities not only enhanced my academic skills but also taught me time management, organization, and how to balance multiple responsibilities. Financial preparedness was another major aspect of my preparation. As a first-generation student, I was unfamiliar with the process of applying for financial aid and scholarships. I made it a priority to educate myself about available resources, attending workshops and meeting with financial aid counselors. I also applied for scholarships and worked part-time jobs to save money for college. Through this, I learned to advocate for myself and find the necessary financial support to pursue my education. Ultimately, my decision to pursue higher education comes from a deep desire to achieve my goals and to create a better future for myself and my family. The challenges I have faced as a first-generation student have strengthened my determination, and I am ready for the next steps. I am fully aware that college will bring new obstacles, but I feel prepared to tackle them. The steps I’ve taken so far have equipped me with the tools necessary for success, and I look forward to using these experiences to thrive in higher education. In conclusion, pursuing higher education is not only a personal goal but also a way for me to honor my family and break new ground as a first-generation student. The preparation I’ve done—both academically and financially—has shaped my journey and made me more confident in my ability to succeed. I am eager to continue my educational journey, knowing that every challenge I face will bring me closer to the success I’ve worked so hard for.

Everyone faces adversity at some point in their life. These challenges, although difficult, have a profound way of shaping us, teaching us resilience and perseverance. I experienced one of the most difficult periods of my life in 2016, a year that tested my strength and the strength of my family. My mother underwent major head surgery, and shortly after, we moved to Florida due to financial hardships because she had lost her job. This time of adversity was transformative for me, teaching me invaluable lessons about perseverance, the importance of family, and the power of never giving up. The surgery that my mother had in 2016 was a pivotal moment for our family. It was a highly risky procedure, and there was a great deal of uncertainty surrounding it. I watched my mother face this challenge with courage and determination, never allowing fear to consume her. After the surgery, her recovery was slow and painful, but her strength never wavered. This period of hardship became even more difficult when my mother lost her job shortly after her surgery. The financial stability that we had known was no longer there, and we were forced to make some difficult decisions. In the face of all these challenges, we decided to move to Florida, where my mother hoped to find a fresh start and a new job. The relocation was not easy, and it came with its own set of challenges. We had to adjust to a new environment, make new friends, and find new ways of living within our changed circumstances. The process of moving and starting over was overwhelming at times, but we persevered. My mother’s resilience in the face of her health problems and job loss gave me the strength to keep going. She never gave up, no matter how difficult the situation was. Her determination to provide for our family, even in the hardest of times, was inspiring. Overcoming adversity is never a simple process, and it requires immense patience, strength, and belief in oneself. For me, the adversity we faced in 2016 taught me to never give up, no matter how overwhelming life’s challenges may seem. I learned that resilience is not about avoiding pain or hardship, but about facing them head-on with determination and a positive attitude. I also learned the importance of family and community support. We relied on each other in ways we had never done before, and this brought us closer together. If I were to give advice to someone facing similar circumstances, I would tell them not to lose hope. Life may be full of unexpected challenges, but it is also full of opportunities for growth. No matter how difficult it may seem, keep moving forward and remember that things will improve with time and effort. Reach out to your loved ones for support, and never be afraid to ask for help when you need it. Most importantly, remember that adversity does not define you. How you respond to adversity shapes who you become. Like my mother, you have the power to rise above and emerge stronger than before. In conclusion, the adversity I faced in 2016 with my mother’s surgery, job loss, and our move to Florida shaped me into a stronger and more resilient person. I learned that challenges are a natural part of life, and it is our response to them that defines us. My advice to anyone facing adversity is simple: never give up, stay positive, and trust that you have the strength to overcome any obstacle.

At 19, my mother left Cuba, driven by the oppressive realities of living under a communist regime. In Cuba, personal freedom was limited, and opportunities were scarce. My mother dreamed of a better life, one where she could pursue her goals without the constraints of the government. She made the difficult decision to leave everything behind, including her family, to seek freedom and opportunity in the United States. The journey was not easy. My mother arrived in the U.S. with little more than hope. The language barrier, cultural differences, and financial struggles made her new life challenging. Yet, she was determined to succeed. She worked long hours in low-paying jobs, learned English, and continued her education. Over time, she built the life she had once only dreamed of. Looking at my mother today, I see a woman who is not just a survivor but a success. Her journey from Cuba to the United States is not only a testament to her strength but also a reminder of the power of hope and determination. Her decision to leave everything behind in search of freedom and opportunity has shaped not just her life but mine as well. It is because of her sacrifices that I am able to pursue my dreams and build a future that was once unimaginable. My mother’s story has shaped my own understanding of freedom and perseverance. Her resilience in the face of adversity reminds me of the privileges I sometimes take for granted. Her sacrifices have allowed me to pursue my dreams and appreciate the opportunities I have today. Her journey continues to inspire me, teaching me the value of hard work, hope, and the importance of never giving up.
