Growing up, reading was more than just a hobby; it was a way to connect with my family’s history and explore new possibilities. I remember being captivated by illustrated Bible stories as a child—each page filled with vibrant lessons that sparked my imagination. As I grew older, my reading tastes evolved—Eloise and Pinkalicious captured the world through a lens of adventure and joy, while Harry Potter and The Misadventures of an Awkward Black Girl taught me about resilience, identity, and embracing differences.
One of my proudest projects has been creating a family cookbook, rich with recipes and stories from my Southern Louisiana roots. Our family’s cooking was always full of soul and dishes that have been passed down through generations. But as health issues like diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure began affecting family members, we started reimagining these recipes. We substituted ingredients, reduced fats and sugars, all while trying to keep the flavors that made them special. Adapting made me realize that taking charge of our health requires knowledge.
My curiosity about health led me to dive deeper into reading about genetic testing. Watching my family face health struggles, I felt a growing sense of urgency. I wanted to understand the genetic factors that influenced our health and see if there was a way to prevent or reduce risks. Reading about the power of genetic testing sparked a sense of empowerment in me. I realized that knowledge isn’t just about understanding—it’s about using that understanding to make informed decisions and take control of our health.
To further my knowledge, I joined an allied health program in high school, where I had the opportunity to volunteer in hospitals and shadow healthcare professionals. These hands-on experiences allowed me to apply what I had read about healthcare in real-world settings, reinforcing my desire to pursue a career where I can use education and prevention to help others take control of their health.
Now, more than ever, I am committed to a future in healthcare. My family’s legacy of reading, storytelling, and adapting to change has shaped my ambition to empower others. I want to use the knowledge I gain through healthcare education to break the cycle of preventable diseases and help others create their own healthy legacies—just as my family and I have learned to do.
